May 13th, 2016, Part Two
Mica knew Ianto had gotten mixed up with aliens and a secret organization. However, nothing could have prepared her for that. Her uncle whose first steps were remembered by her mum, who spent four weeks in a prison and according to David, was always dressed in an immaculate suit…her uncle, was like a real-life super hero.
“They didn’t have any of that online,” she stated, shaking her head, “They had that he worked for you and that it was an organization that fought aliens, but…nothing like that and that he died by a malfunction with the pipes?”
If she didn’t know better, she would thought she slapped him from the way he paled and looked away before clutching Iefan closer to him.
“They said that? They said that online?” Jack asked and the words became angrier with every syllable, “Was that the government?”
She nodded because even her mum on her worst day was nothing like this. Then, it fizzled as fast as it had come and he appeared like he might cry, kissing the top of his son’s head.
It almost as though the baby was the only thing keeping him together, like emotional glue. Mica felt odd to see him so vulnerable and wasn’t sure what to do. Settling on the one thing in his life that made him happy, she asked, “How old is Iefan now?”
The baby looked at her and smiled when she said his name.
“Five months and nine days, aren’t you, Iefan?” he confirmed and there was a high-pitched giggle in response, “And he likes when people say his name and he’s started rice cereal.”
Iefan banged his palm against the glass of his father’s watch so there was a thumping sound. Jack managed a smile and continued, “That’s not how Ianto died, that’s not how he died at all. Those government liars wanted to hand you and the rest of the kids over to the aliens. No one knew how to fight them, but your uncle wanted us to do something anyway…anything so you and David would be safe. We went to Thames House to talk to the aliens…that’s where it went all wrong. When we said they couldn’t have the children, they released a virus into the air and that’s why your uncle died because he dared to tell them ‘No’.”
It was just as their mum had always told them except more detailed. He had died trying to save them. He really was amazing. Then, the alarm on her mobile went off.
“Shit, I have to be somewhere soon,” Mica explained and then realized, “You should come with me!”
He brightened until Iefan said, “E e e e e e e e!
Then, his face turned serious again.
“Let me guess, you’re having a fancy birthday dinner in Cardiff with reservations and everything?” he asked and she nodded, “And your mum and dad and David and possibly even friends will be there?”
“Of course, even David’s boyfriend from university will be there,” Mica answered and saw him smile for a second.
“Then, no, I can’t,” he spoke and shook his head.
“Why not?” she questioned, standing up and walking over so she towered over his sitting form.
“I’d ruin your party,” Jack stated as though it was a fact, “As soon as your mum saw the baby, there’d be a scene and we’d have to explain things to your friends. Do they even know you have an Uncle Jack?”
“Well, no, but I could explain it, I could explain everything,” she insisted which earned her a smirk from him, “And I don’t see why my mum would be upset about the baby.”
“Iefan looks too much like him,” he uttered and the baby smiled.
“David? It’s all just a funny coincidence. I’m sure she’d understand,” Mica spoke and he sighed.
“But there are two things I can do for you, first, let me have your mobile,” he said and held out his hand until she gave it over, “Iefan, smile!”
When that big toothless grin appeared, he pressed a button and handed it back.
“There, you have the only other picture of him on this planet,” he told her and stood up, “Now, I’ll give you a ride.”
She looked at her mobile as they headed for the door and declared, “My very own cousin.”
Jack just stopped, asking, “What’d you say?”
“Well, if you’re my uncle, he’s your son, then he’s my cousin, right?” she clarified and after a few seconds, he nodded.
“Of course, that’s right,” he confirmed and opened the door for her. Although she tried her best to convince him, he couldn’t be budged. Time passed as she waited for some sort of sign that didn't come. He had been babyproofing. He must have meant to stay. Then, why didn't he phone? This must have been what her mum felt like...her mum. Mica was so glad that she never told her. It would have just been another disappointment. She was tempted to try and visit again, but it wasn't as though Cardiff was in the neighborhood and she didn't even have his digits to phone him. She tried to push it out of her mind as months added up.
It was the day before Valentine’s Day and Mica was fidgeting with a pink woolen hat; wondering if she should ask to do something then. It didn't have to be a date. They could just do a movie or something. She gave up and started playing a video game on her telly. Her mobile rang and while it would be late notice, she hoped it would be Lee asking for a date especially since the number wasn’t familiar.
“Hello,” she answered while pressing pause on the game.
“Mica?” the familiar voice asked and she nearly dropped the device.
“Uncle Jack? How did you get my number?” she questioned because she had never given it to him.
“When you showed me your brother’s baby photo, I sent it to mine,” came the explanation, “Now, I need your help.”
He needed her help? What?
“Why do you need my help?” she questioned and settled down on her bed.
“Because I need you to arrange a meeting between me and your mum in a public place, I’m thinking the play area on Darwin Drive. Is it still around?” he inquired and she wondered when the “but” would come in. He’d always made excuses before.
When that didn’t happen, she suggested, “How about you just come over? We’re both home.”
“No…no, it needs to be a public place with nothing breakable,” he stated and she sighed.
“Even though I’m beginning to be put out with this, why are you so sure that my mom is going to try and kill you? Her temper is really not that bad. I’d think she’d be happy that you got on and tried to start over by adopting a baby,” she said and there was a pause in the conversation.
“Because if I were in her place, I’d kill me,” he replied and she hated this. Both adults acted like they knew each other better than she knew them.
“Whatever,” she mumbled into the mobile.
“And you can’t tell her that she’s meeting me,” Jack added and she frowned. Of course, there was another condition. They couldn’t just meet and get this over with.
“Fine, go there now, I’ll join you and come up with an excuse why she has to come pick me up or something” Mica told him and when she received an affirmative, hung up. Could she even trust him? She didn't want her mum hurt again.
