She hugged the baby to her and smiled until she received a giggle.
“Still, it must be tough after the trouble you were having,” Martha spoke, “Have you been able to let yourself be happier?”
“Well, it’s not like I woke up one day and said I’m not going to cry over him anymore, it doesn’t work that way,” Jack tried to explain, crossing his arms, “It’s a struggle every day, not just with Ianto being gone, but Steven’s death and everything, but I’m trying. I look at Iefan and he’s always smiling and he makes me want to smile, too.”
“Oh, that makes me glad,” she said, hugging him with one arm, “I’d offer you to pick her up, but she tends to get upset. Her sleeping on the way over here was the only way I was able to carry her inside.”
“Ah,” he acknowledged, “So, that’s what I have to look forward to?”
They both smiled because they knew he was going to enjoy every moment, even the fits. However, he had a couple of serious things to discuss.
“Ianto’s niece has been investigating him,” he said and motioned to the couch to sit down.
“I know,” she admitted with a grimace, “She’s tried to hack into UNIT files a couple of times. She’s on their watch list. I still have a few mates there and they thought I should know.”
He knew Mica was getting into things, but not this badly.
“Did you tell her mum about that?” he asked and she shook her head.
“No, but it’s only a matter of time before she cracks it,” Martha said and after a pause, added, “Because her brother already did it.”
“David’s doing this, too?” Jack questioned and slumped against the fabric. Iefan sat between them and Mariah was climbing up.
“It was only once and they couldn’t tell that he’d actually read anything. I think he just did it to see if he could and didn't tell Mica about it,” she tried to reassure him, “It was more than a year ago and he hasn’t done anything since. In the fall, he’s even going to university to be a teacher.”
Ianto would have been so proud of him for that. It was hard to believe that Mica and David were getting that old, but he had missed the last six years of their lives.
“She said that the government’s official story is something about the pipes backing up in Thames House?” he questioned and saw her cringe again.
“The official story is that the pipes feeding the atmosphere into the 456’s tank backed up into the air conditioning and that killed everyone inside,” she said and redid her daughter’s shoe that was falling off.
“But that’s not what happened,” he complained and she gave him a sympathetic glance.
“But no one’s saying otherwise and you’re the only one who knows exactly what happened,” Martha spoke, leaning closer to him.
He was about to argue that point when he realized that she was probably right. The governments would have covered up the fact that they had been watching everything happening in front of that tank.
“What about Gwen though? She knows the truth,” Jack pointed out and she shook her head.
“Gwen has enough problems with Torchwood without worrying about misinformation,” she countered, “And I think I know a little bit of how she feels although at least Rhys has a normal job. With both of us working in what we do…if something comes up, it might be twenty-four hours or more before Mickey or I can see Mariah. My mum or Tish watches her, but it still makes me feel bad sometimes. It probably helps in Gwen’s case now that Ianto’s in school.”
His confusion must have been visible from what she said next.
“Oh, you don’t know, she named her son, Ianto,” Martha explained and he noticed how she couldn’t help looking at Iefan while she talked, “He looks more like Rhys but he has her hair and…blue eyes.”
He tried to picture it. Then, he remembered Ianto’s diary entries where he had lied to her and how she’d found out later, but then he also recalled how Ianto had given Gwen the directions to Flat Holm and the way they were almost like siblings sometimes. It was a fitting tribute.
“What about Johnson? She didn’t work out?” he asked and her mouth formed a frown; giving him his answer.
“Mama, I hungry,” Mariah complained and tugged on her mum’s red shirt.
“Lunchtime?” Martha inquired and Jack nodded, standing up.
“I only have sandwich fixings though. I didn’t think to get anything else,” he apologized and picked Iefan up.
“Life with a five month old,” she said with a smile, “I remember what that was like. I called the Prime Minister by the wrong name.”
They both laughed.
“At least he’s sleeping through the night though, yeah?” Martha questioned as she helped the toddler off the couch.
“That wasn’t the bad part,” Jack spoke while Mariah ran into the kitchen, “the worst part was the colic every night for three months.”
“You’d never be able to guess that now,” she commented and Iefan laughed to prove her point. It was a sharp contrast to the annoyed sounds coming from the little girl who was unable to open the refrigerator. He was pleased that his baby-proofing had worked before undoing the plastic locking device and taking the food out.
“How old was he here?” Martha asked of the two objects attached on the side with magnets Ianto had bought at Ikea.
“Eleven when he wrote out the poem and sixteen in the picture with David,” he said while dumping the meat and bread on the counter, “I’m going to have them framed.”
“Aww, The stream flows, The wind blows, The cloud fleets, The heart beats, Nothing will die,” she read, “You could put one of Iefan next to them.”
“That’s a great idea,” he agreed and gestured for her to come eat what she wanted, “Did you want to eat outside or in the living room on the coffee table?”
Martha shot him an amused look.
“The two of you didn’t do much entertaining, did you?” she guessed and he shook his head. If the weather was nice, they’d eat outside and if it wasn’t, they had a table or the couch. Besides, most of their meals were eaten in the Hub anyway. He supposed that would have to change, maybe even get a real dining table.
“Outside will be perfect,” she replied and they moved plates, food and children out to the patio set. He set himself up with a sandwich, took a bite and went back inside to make Iefan’s cereal. The baby was sitting in Martha’s lap while Mariah was running around in the grass. Occasionally, she’d end up in the flowers that were overgrown. No one had tended to them since the last time Ianto had done it. Jack stirred the mixture until he was sure it was done and went outside.
“Want that,” Mariah stated a few minutes later and pointed at the rice cereal that he was feeding Iefan.
“You don’t want that, Mariah. That’s baby food and you’re not a baby, you’re a big girl,” Martha argued as the toddler shook her head.
“Want that,” she repeated and Jack hoped she wouldn’t try to climb up on his lap. He doubted there was room for both children on it.
“Look, here’s cheese,” Martha pointed out and held up a small piece. The little brown eyes considered the offer and finally took it from her mother.
“Chew it! Don’t just swallow it. I don’t want a repeat of the barley sugar incident,” she said before looking at Jack, “She nearly choked on candy until her dad did the Heimlich on her…gave me such a fright when I found out about it later. Has he scared you yet?”
Jack thought about the day Iefan was born and how scared he became after throwing up blood.
“Well, we had a close call on Raxacoricofallapatorius,” he said, “where the president wanted to keep him because he was so cute.”
Smiling at the baby was rewarded with his son smiling back.
“Really?” asked Martha with an intrigued expression. He let her think it a bit longer and then shook his head.
“No, except for Cardiff, I haven’t let him out of the TARDIS,” Jack admitted and she set her sandwich back down in bigger amazement than before.
“So, you did meet up with the Doctor!” she exclaimed and scooted her chair closer.
“He saved us actually,” he uttered as Iefan shook his head, refusing to eat any more, “He even delivered him.”

Date: 2010-02-02 12:24 am (UTC)Please, Please, PLEASE don't take this as a reflection on your writing because it so isn't any such thing!!! It's simply something the official DW writers did that my brain can't seem to wrap itself around. It's almost like when I try to picture it my brain freaks out & goes into a fugue state about it. Yeah my brain's a weird place to be.
So in my happy little land of denial they're friends w/ benefits rather than married. As far as I can foresee it doesn't really impact the overall story arcs of the various pieces that have this detail as part of them. It's not just your story that I'm doing this with. I'm just weird that way.

Date: 2010-02-11 12:52 am (UTC)But then, it's cruel to pair two characters because you think their names sound good together...could have easily had Ianto fall for Sarah Jane instead and without explaining away Tom? But luckily, we weren't given a timeline so any of the non-Rose segments could have easily been years in the future at least...
And what is Rusty's obsession with hyphenated names? Do women in Britain really prefer this system that much to keeping their maiden name or just changing their maiden name to his?
As for Face of Boe...I have another story series that's a crossover with Firefly and Pirates of the Caribbean and in that series, I try to find an explanation that I could live with for the giant head thing.
Thank you for your interest in my story.
