Jack could tell that Gwen didn’t really want to watch those discs which made him appreciate the offer more.

He stood up and took the case, saying, “It won’t be tonight. It’ll be next month.”

One last thing to ask before she left and he wished that it wasn't necessary.

"There's another favor I need," he spoke and knew he was keeping her from her sick son, but he wouldn't be doing that unless it was important.

"Anything, you just name it," Gwen said and took her coat off a peg in the corner.

"I need you to make a file on Iefan with a security restriction so that only you have access to it," he told her and stuck his hands in his own coat, "Just in case...if something happens...you can say he's under Torchwood's jurisdiction. I don't want UNIT or someone taking him."

It was one of his worst fears and with what Iefan had done the day before...it made that fear more viable.

Gwen stopped doing her buttons halfway up and looked at him with disbelief.

"What would they want with him?" she asked in a serious voice again.

"They did it with Alice and Steven," Jack uttered and hated the way his voice shook. It had been over a year. It shouldn't still affect him like this.

"Oh, Jack," Gwen spoke and embraced him. She should know the truth even though it was hard to say aloud.

"Iefan's not...he's not normal," he whispered and her brown eyes were sympathetic. As a parent, he knew that she knew how difficult it was to admit about your own child.

"Of course then, I'll do it, it'll be the first thing I do when I come back," Gwen promised and squeezed his shoulder before putting an arm around his back as they walked out.

On the drive back to Newport, he searched for the noisiest song he could find and cranked it as high as he could stand until he couldn’t hear his own thoughts anymore.
However, as he drew closer to the house, he could already hear Iefan screaming and the front door opened before he even parked.

“I’m here, I’m here. Taddy’s here, Iefan,” he said in a loud voice and ran to the baby in Rhi’s arms, “How am I ever going to leave you if you cry like this?”

“Because he stopped crying twenty minutes after you left and just started up again ten minutes ago,” she spoke with an amused expression, “Come on inside.”

He hung up his coat as she shut the door and they moved to the couch. Then, she gave him a blue gift bag.

“This is for you. Unless you already have one, but I didn’t see one at your house,” Rhi babbled and motioned for him to open it.

Jack stuck his hand in and took out a book that said “Baby’s First Moments” on the cover.

“You got me a babybook!” he exclaimed in happiness and hugged her with one hand, “I forgot to get one. Thank you.”

“I was just surprised you didn’t have one,” she spoke, “Iefan picked it out. He pointed to the one he wanted.”

She laughed and his son laughed, too.

“Rhi, did you notice anything strange about him?” he asked, “Anything kind of odd?”

“Oh, Jack, you’re about like a first-time parent and they’re always imagining things, that their child has some rare disease or can read when they’re three months old…”

“I’m not imagining this, he takes after his parents like David and Mica take after you,” he interrupted and saw her freeze.

“You really think so?” she questioned and when he nodded, added, “There may have been an odd thing or two that happened. If you’re serious, hang on.”

He waited as she went into the kitchen and came back.

“I’ve done this before with neighborhood kids because I wondered if Mica and David were the exception, turns out they were,” she said and showed his son two closed fists, “Iefan, which fist has the cracker?”

A small hand pointed to the right one which she opened to reveal a cracker. After giving it to him, she turned to Jack, saying, “I guess you’re right.”

“Why couldn’t we have been normal?” he inquired in an almost whisper, “Why can’t I have a normal life? I tried Rhi, I really did. I even went to one of those mummy and me things. How did you know it wouldn’t work out? You’ve done it and you seem happy.”

Rhi shifted Iefan onto her lap so she could move closer to Jack and put her arm around him.

He put his arm around her as well. Then, she leaned closer.

“Because you’re not me, Jack. I do like it, you’re right,” she agreed, “I like being the one they can depend on to watch their kids in a pinch or pick up their post when they go on holiday, but you’re not like that. You’re meant for other things.”

Jack played with the blond curls on Iefan’s head.

“But how am I supposed to leave him every day? How can I listen to that screaming every day?” he asked and Rhi rubbed his back.

“I know, that part’s going to be hard. The first few times I left David behind with my dad or Ianto…I called every five minutes and couldn’t stand being away from him and that was when he was too young to really protest or understand what was happening…”

“Ianto babysat?” he inquired with surprise.

“Oh yes, if he was going to live with us, he was going to have to earn his keep,” she told him with a smile, “Iefan will be fine once he gets used to it and he’ll be in the best hands.”

“It’s still going to be hard to leave and…” he started but couldn’t add ‘go back’.

“Just think about what you’re doing. Every parent wants what’s best for their children. They want their child to have a long and happy life. You can actually do that for him by protecting the planet,” Rhi spoke, “You’d be doing it for him, what better reason is there?”

Jack’s blue eyes fixed on Iefan who smiled and looked so much like Ianto. He took a breath and admitted, “I borrowed a disc from Gwen today, that’s what I was doing.”

“What kind of disc?” she asked and was right to have the suspicious tone.

“It’s Ianto as a Torchwood employee in action,” he uttered.

“But…” she prompted.

“It’s the footage from Thames House,” he added and felt her tense.

“So, it has his death?” she questioned and he nodded.

“You and Mica have both said how you wanted to see the Torchwood side of him. This is the only footage that remains,” Jack stated and she nodded.

“Let me think about it, when are you going to watch it?” she inquired although she wasn’t looking at him.

“Next month, probably the twentieth,” he replied and wasn’t sure if she remembered, “Our wedding anniversary.”

“Right,” Rhi said and there was a definite pause before she continued, “No matter what I decide, I will be expecting both of you on the twenty-fourth for my birthday dinner.”

“Of course, I wouldn’t miss that,” Jack spoke with a smile and pulled her closer.

“Faba,” Iefan babbled and waved his plush animal.

“Do not ever take Faba away, not even for a bath,” she spoke.

“Learned that the hard way, didn’t you?” he asked with a grin because that’s how he learned. She shared his grin before speaking, “I suppose Mica has tried to weasel every last detail of him from you.”

“She’s made a valiant effort,” Jack told her and Rhi’s face fell.

“That girl…she worries me, Jack,” she admitted, shaking her head, “I know a teenage daughter is supposed to worry her mum, but I’d be relieved if she dated more. At least, I wouldn’t have to worry about her hacking.”

He rubbed a hand over her back.

“She’s too much like him. It scares me that she’ll end up just like him,” she continued, “I know he did a lot with the little time he had, but I want more for her, a whole lifetime.”

“I know,” he agreed because that’s what Ianto would have wanted.

“And the way she plays those games where she’s slaughtering aliens as if they’re nothing. It worries me, too. I know my brother was killed by some, but in that Martyn book and from what Gwen says, some are nice,”she spoke and bounced Iefan on her knees.

“I may have some ideas about that…maybe this summer, is it tea time yet?” he asked and took his son from her. The baby started grunting and he knew what meant.

“No, but it is time for lunch,” she announced and he knew from her smile that he’d be staying for that. As she left the room, he fetched the nappy bag and thought about Mica. It sounded like she could use a trip or two with the Doctor. At the very least, he could introduce her to Sarah Jane.

This is still such a great story! And I like what Jack's thinking about for Mica. That would be great for her.
