The Best of Intentions
Rhi unsnapped the carrier and took it off Jack with Iefan inside it.
"Dow! Dow!" Iefan yelled and clapped his hands. The large cliff that they stood on was worrying. However, he trusted Rhi. With a deep breath, he strode to the front door and knocked.
It opened and a little girl with ginger hair was standing there.
"You're not my daddy," she stated with a pout. Who was this?
"Uh, can I see Melissa?" he asked with a smile.
"Melissa? No Melissa here," she said and shut the door.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go...
Who was the girl? Did Alice have her own secrets?
The door opened again with the girl hanging on the handle. Her brown eyes narrowed and she questioned, "Did you mean my mama?"
It was very possible that he did and if he didn't, he could at least get some of his questions answered.
"Yes," he said with a nod, "but can two of my friends come in, too?"
He doubted the girl had that authority, but no one else was around.
"Your friends?" she asked with suspicion.
"Rhi!" he called and the two of them came over.
"Aww, baby!" the girl yelled in delight at seeing Iefan.
"Hi!" said Iefan; awake and waving.
"Can we come in now?" he asked and she moved the door back so there was room, "where is she?"
"In her room, I'll show ya," she said and he followed her to a door. He knocked on it.
"Come in," came Alice' voice and he opened the door. As he did so, there was an audible gasp.
"I thought it would be you, but I hoped it wouldn't be," she said, sitting behind a desk and he closed the door behind him, "It's been so long that I thought I could be wrong."
Her appearance had not changed much in eight years except for more lines and she had gained some weight.
"Who is the girl?"
"She's my daughter," Alice confirmed and crossed her arms. He had a granddaughter except he didn't know her name. He had thought about asking her, but he didn't want her to think complete strangers asking her name was okay.
"Why did you come?"
Her voice sprang on him like a cat.
"I thought it was about time that we talked," he lied and he hated how easy it was to do. She laughed in a bitter way.
"It's really not," she retorted and leaned back.
"You're right. I didn't want to come, but Rhi thought I should and she's usually right when it comes to this sort of thing," Jack admitted and crossed his arms as well.
"Who's Rhi? Your latest girlfriend?" Alice asked and her brown eyes were accusing.
"No, it's not like that, she's married..."
"Like that's stopped you before," she interrupted and he allowed the cheap shots. He had killed her son, after all.
"You don't have to forgive me but I hope you were able to forgive yourself," he uttered in a soft voice. She shook her head and the sadness returned to her face, like the death had just happened again.
"Do you know how I was able to keep living? It wasn't just coming here. When I came here, I pretended that none of it had ever happened...that I never knew you...that you didn't exist...that my marriage had been childless...that Steven had never been born," she spat in a half-sob, half-allegation.
"Oh, Alice..." he whispered and started walking towards her. Then, there were fast footsteps coming closer and the door opened. He had assumed it would be her daughter and so did she from the shocked look on her face. Jack turned to see Iefan with a reddened face full of tears. One chubby hand held his plush animal while the other held its arm.
"Taddy! Faba!" he cried and Jack picked him up without hesitation.
"What happened?" he asked and remembered about Alice. She watched them; her mouth half-agape. The three of them looked at each other.
"Steven...no, he's dead and this boy has curls and...and..." she stammered and bought her hands to her face, "and he called you 'taddy'."
"Taddy means..."
"I know what taddy means," she interrupted before he could finish and her brown eyes glistened, "and that would mean he's my..."
"Yeah," he confirmed and Iefan's distress was interrupted by confusion.
"Ooo tchky?" asked the toddler while staring at Alice. He looked toward her to decide what she wanted to tell him. He didn't want to tell her since he knew so well what that felt like to be forced into a role that wasn't true.
"I'm your...I can't tell him, can I? I can't tell him," she spoke, "I couldn't tell my husband about you or try it to explain it to Lucia or..."
She sighed before standing up and he saw that perhaps her weight wasn't due to age. It almost looked like his daughter was pregnant again and it sounded like his grand-daughter's name was Lucia, but if she couldn't admit to Iefan being her brother, then he couldn't admit to these children that he was their grandfather either.
"I'm your Aunt Melissa," she said and he was relieved to see a tiny smile.
"Modi?" he asked and looked at Jack.
"Yeah, Iefan, you have two aunts," he confirmed and Iefan walked with a few cautious steps to the woman who kneeled down to his level. She opened her arms and embraced him in a hug.
"Oh, Iefan, it was nice to meet you," she said while holding him close, "his eyes look like yours but not much else."
"Lucia would say the same thing about you," he reminded her, "she said you had my ears and lips and nothing else."
"Who's his mum?" she asked and he gathered up his courage.
"I am," he admitted and she laughed until his blue eyes met her brown ones.
"No..." she argued but not in a forceful way.
"And I could do that before becoming immortal," he quipped and she shook her head although he saw her trying not to grin.
"Who's his father then?" Alice questioned and let the boy go.
"Ianto Jones," he told her and saw a flicker of recognition, "I went away for awhile...lost time...I became pregnant in June 2009."
"Ianto Jones, that was the man they found your body with, they were almost entwined, I heard Johnson talking about it," she said while playing with one of Iefan's blond curls.
"He was my husband," Jack spoke and came closer before kneeling down himself, "Rhi's Ianto's sister. She takes care of him while I'm at...work."
She sighed again.
"You mean Torchwood, you still work for Torchwood," Alice spoke and put her hands over the two pieces of Faba, "You want me to fix him?"
Iefan nodded his head with enthusiasm and let her take them.
"You're really going to do it?" Jack asked and she nodded as she stood up.
"Least I could do for my b-r-o-t-h-e-r, right?" she replied and opened drawers in her desk before taking out a green plastic case. When she leaned down, he saw that her hair was dark-colored as he remembered except for the roots which were grey.
"Bawa?" Iefan questioned and looked toward Jack. Alice' face held an expression of disbelief.
"How did he do that? He can't possibly spell yet," she pointed out and he shook his head.
"No, but he can hear you. He can hear you thinking, sort of like when you always know it's me..."
"Except not, that's more like a sixth sense. We're talking about mind reading...which I wouldn't put it past you, but Iefan's normal," Alice retorted and Jack scratched the back of his head. Oh, the stories he could tell to disprove that, he thought.
"Not exactly normal...his father could do the same thing, just not as easily," he explained and she just shook her head again. At this point, she was threading a needle and started stitching the pieces back together. Iefan pulled himself into a chair so he could see her better and Jack took the other one.
"So, it worked for you? To just pretend none of it happened?" he inquired of their prior discussion.
"It worked; it did until you showed up," she spoke in a low voice.
"The only thing I ever wanted for you was to be happy..."
"Well, you did a piss poor job of it," she interrupted before seeming to remember that Iefan was right there, "Don't repeat what I say. They're bad words."
