What's Better than a Ring?
December 23rd, 2017
David clinked the plastic wine glass with Emyr, but while his boyfriend savored his drink, he gulped it down. His palms were sweating and he wiped them on his trousers. He'd borrowed one of the blankets from their bed for the picnic along the beach in front of the promenade. The Mediterranean Sea lay out in front of them. Emyr chewed on one of the grapes and swallowed. His brown eyes were suspicious even though his feet were intertwined with his.
"Today has been the best. We saw the art in the castle and you prepared this picnic for us and drove us to Nice. I'd almost think it was my birthday," he said, "but since it isn't, I think you're up to something."
He knew him too well.
"Well, it's just since the other day with that girl, I've been thinking and...I just don't want you to be with anyone else," David spoke and Emyr turned to rest on his side.
"Is that so?" Emyr asked.
"Yeah," he confirmed before admitting, "And I don't want to be with anyone else either."
Emyr smiled. When he smiled, it felt like the greatest smile in the known universe. This had worked out a lot better than he could have hoped. He thought he might have to make a long speech or something. His mobile went off; a sharp trilling sound that contrasted with the laughing and talking that surrounded them. People were milling around the beach as well as joggers, skaters, bikers and people pushing prams behind them on the pavement. He clicked "IGNORE" and dropped it by their feet. His mum could wait. Emyr was watching him and as he did so, the smile vanished. Had he forgotten something?
"Was that your way of trying to propose to me?" Emyr asked, crossing his arms.
"Umm...yeah," David answered and Emyr groaned before standing up, "What?"
Emyr motioned his arms to him before crossing them again with a frown. What did he want? Did he want the traditional proposal? David rose up so he rested on one knee.
"No, don't make me into some sort of girl. That's not what I want," Emyr complained, turning around for a moment before facing him again, "But if you could at least make it sound like more of a proposal with some of the normal wording or something? How are we supposed to explain it to the grandkids?"
Grandkids, he...he actually liked the sound of that. He and Emyr would be sitting in plush chairs with grey in their hair and two or three ankle-biters on their laps. David took a deep breath and hoped the perfect words would come to mind. He sat back down on the blanket and asked, "Emyr, a fyddwch wedi i mi?"
"Ydw, wrth gwrs, yr wyf yn bydd," said Emyr, sinking back down to his level and kissing him. Then, there was a street musician walking by which made it even better.

Jack lay awake with his eyes closed. It had been five days since he'd seen Alice and he had hoped she'd call, but she hadn't. There were strange noises in the room and he opened his eyes in time to see Iefan perched on top of the railing of his cot.
"Taddy!" Iefan cried before he lost his balance and fell, "Oops."
"Iefan!" Jack yelled and sprang out of bed. His son was laughing.
"Fall fun," he said and Jack shook his head.
"Not for me," Jack complained and picked him up: studying him for bruises or breaks.
"Brekkie!" Iefan requested and if he wanted to eat, he must be fine.
"When we get home, you're getting a big boy bed so this never happens again," Jack spoke, "Oh, you scared me."
Iefan blew him a kiss and he smiled.
"I'm not sure downstairs will be open for food yet, but we should be able to find a market or something," he told him before going into a drawer to find him some clean clothes for the day. Unfortunately, Iefan had his knack for getting stains on things. Then, he heard his mobile vibrate. He assumed it would be Rhi and found a pleasant surprise on the Caller ID.
"Hello, gorgeous, I've been hoping you'd call," he said into the mobile.
"Hi, dad, I'm sorry I haven't called," she whispered, "They're still asleep."
"So, they don't like me?" he guessed as Iefan played with his toes.
"Well, they don't know you that well," Alice, said, "but it didn't go that well last time with the pushing and the biting and the...row with my husband."
Iefan had become bored with his toes and was exploring in his nappy bag until he found the last of the oreos.
"I'm sorry," he uttered while rubbing his face.
"I know," she replied, "I want you to come tomorrow; not in the morning because we'll be at his parents' in Dolceacqua, but I want you to come for the evening. I'll fix dinner...you could even bring Rhi and her family."
"Alice, that's seven extra people," Jack told her. There was a pause before she spoke, "It might not be all my cooking then."
He did want to see her before he left and perhaps Mica or David could act as a buffer between Iefan and Lucia.
"I hope this goes well," he said as Iefan continued eating biscuits.
"It will...it has to," Alice told him, "bye, dad."
With that, the call was over.

Gwen walked into the family room in time to hear a loud fart fill the room.
"No, no, son, let the master show you how it's done," said Rhys' voice and a much louder fart sounded. She rolled her eyes and whispered, "Boys."
Gwen took heavy steps on purpose so that both would turn on the couch to see her.
"Oh, hi, dear," Rhys said with an embarassed expression like he'd been caught eating sweets during a diet, "I was just..."
"Teaching our son important life skills?" she suggested with a smile.
"Something like that," he agreed.
"And you," Gwen said, turning to Ianto, "are you trying to outdo Thunderpants?"
"If only I could," her son replied and she shook her head, but didn't really mean it.
"Actually, I believe it's time for little boys to go to bed," Gwen told him as she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm not little," Ianto argued, ""I'm going to be eight next month."
"So, you wouldn't be bothered if Father Christmas missed this house because you were still awake?" she asked and his blue eyes widened.
"Miss Father Christmas?" he questioned in a worried tone before shooting off his seat and running up the stairs.
"We'll be up in a bit!" she yelled after him. Rhys rose up and took her around the waist.
"Come here, you," he said in a playful way as he pulled her onto the couch with him. She giggled and put her arms around him.
"We made a good kid, didn't we?" he asked with a smile.
"Yes, we did," she agreed which was another reason why she wanted another one, "How about after we tuck him in, I open a bottle of wine?"
His fingers were dangerously close to the clasp of her bra.
"Father Christmas won't be cross with us?" he quipped and his green eyes sparkled.
"Oh, I don't think he'll mind," she said, playing along. They kissed for a moment before she pulled away and motioned upstairs. Then, they walked hand in hand to their son's room.

David woke up with Emyr spooned against him. He smiled. Today was Christmas and the perfect opportunity to make their announcement. He kissed Emyr on the lips and untangled himself. David was planning on rolling out of bed and getting into the loo before his fiance woke up. However, as he rolled across the bed, the telly came to life. Scooby-Doo was speaking in Italian as he fumbled for where the remote was hidden in the sheets. He finally found it and shut it off with a sigh.
"Morning," Emyr greeted him and yawned.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you," David apologized.
"That's okay, it's past 7:30 so your mum is bound to knock on the door any moment," Emyr pointed out and he was right. David hadn't bothered to look at the clock.
"I was thinking that we could tell them today," he suggested and watched for the other's response.
"I agree and then, my mum and dad could have a proper excuse for my absence," Emyr said and they both laughed at his imitating his father.
"You could have left. You had plenty of time to fly back when we originally planned to," David reminded him.
"And cut short a holiday in Italy? Not a chance," Emyr replied before shaking his head.
"You still don't mind that I didn't get you anything? Maybe not a ring, but a watch or something?" David asked.
"Tell you what, how about you buy me the new X-Box and we'll call it even?" Emyr suggested with a smile, "It's more practical and we can both enjoy it."
"I can do that," David agreed because he hadn't been immune to Emyr's hints the last few months, but it was a lot of money.
Then, there was a knock at the door just as Emyr had predicted.
"We're moving all the pressies to the breakfast room! Don't keep us waiting!" Rhi yelled, "Or I'll send Mica up!"
