Bombs Away!

Jack carried a sack of presents as well as the nappy bag and Iefan on his back. Rhi had suggested several times that she could carry him, but she didn't look well. The first trimester was probably always the worst. Of course, he did realize that not everyone gets to be pampered in their final months by a Time Lord and his TARDIS. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Rhi squeezed his arm as it opened to reveal Thomas.

"Benvenuto, Jack," he greeted with a smile. If he could try again, Jack could try, too.

"Thanks, Thomas," Jack spoke with a nod, "Do you mind if everyone comes inside before we make introductions?"

"That's fine," Thomas agreed, "Lucia can hear better that way."

The little girl peeking from his side had an indignant expression and opened her mouth to say something.

"In!" Thomas told her and moved so that everyone could come into the house. Alice was there and to his surprise, she hugged him. Oh it felt so good; he wished it could happen more often. He'd been a fool.

"Melissa, Thomas, Lucia, I'd like to introduce Iefan's family," Jack spoke, "This is Rhi Davies, his aunt and her husband, Johnny. The young lady is Mica, their daughter and the blond is David, their son. Emyr Midkiff is his fiance."

It seemed like Thomas paled a bit at that news. However, he was going to have to accept homosexuality if they were ever going to be family.

"Davies family, this is Melissa, Thomas and their daughter, Lucia, but then you've heard all about them," he said with a laugh.

"It's a pleasure to meet all of you," Thomas spoke with mirth that sounded a little forced.

"Likewise," Johnny agreed with his hands in his trouser pockets.

"I have a few more things to finish for dinner so you'll have to excuse me," Alice spoke like the perfect wife and he could tell that she enjoyed playing her part. Still, when she'd hugged him, she seemed glad he was there. It had been her idea for everyone to eat here. He watched as she disappeared up the stairs.

"Down!" Iefan yelled with a kick. Jack undid the straps and set him down. The toddler climbed out as soon as it was low enough. He stayed on one side of the room and Lucia on the other. However, there were more eyes watching them in case something happened.

"This is a nice home you have here," Jack complimented Thomas who shrugged.

"No credit can I take for that. Melissa was living here when we met," he explained, "I was still saving so I was living with my parents."

And there was that age difference again, Jack thought but couldn't work up the nerve to ask the other man's age. It wasn't as though he could be honest if the question was turned back on him.

"So, she's practically a baby snatcher then," Johnny commented with a chuckle.

"Mama don't steal babies," Lucia complained while she carried a baby doll.

"I'm not sure I understand the joke," Thomas spoke and his green eyes shot a suspicious glance at Johnny.

"Because she's old enough to be your mum," Johnny explained and everyone else took a step back from him. Thomas put his hands together and rubbed them before looking up again.

"Only by a little bit," he replied and held his thumb very close to his forefinger, "just seventeen years apart."

Johnny laughed and the two children both wore confused expressions. Jack wondered what he should say to diffuse the situation.

"How did the two of you meet?" Rhi asked with a warm smile.

"I was in Isolabona and I was hungry so I went into this cafe. There was this woman and she was too relaxed to be a turista. She was reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in English. I love this series and then...then, I notice her silky, thick hair with just a little grey here and there, very sexy. I approach her and start talking. I tell her how I always wanted to read Carroll in his native tongue but my English was not good enough. What luck! Melissa tutors in English for a living so she begins helping me and we talk," Thomas explains in an excited tone, "and in a few months, I know she's the one, but I have to work at her because she refuse. She refuse me time after time, day after day until there is only one way to make me stop, she says yes and my life is perfect...or I thought so until Lucia was born."

He looked towards the stairs that Alice had ascended.

"Missy does so much for us, it's almost too much," he said with a laugh, "How did you and Johnny meet?"

"School," Rhi replied in a soft voice and Johnny chuckled. Her face held an expression of horror that became worse as Johnny recounted, "I had a spliff and she wanted some so I told her that I'd share it if she gave me a snog and she did. Wasn't about to let a bird like her go after that."

Johnny's voice seemed younger during the story so the slang wasn't as jarring. He was pleased, but Rhi was glaring at him.

"I thought you met when your friend Nancy got pushed by that bloke and dad pushed him back?" Mica asked with her brown eyes full of confusion.

"That was a few weeks later," Johnny told her and Jack hoped that Thomas would be understanding. His expression was unreadable and Lucia's brown eyes narrowed.

"I think I'm going to sit," Rhi announced and look towards Thomas to see if he would say anything.

"Yes, please, we should all sit," he agreed and took a chair. Lucia clamored to sit on his lap. Iefan did the same with Jack.

"You ever see a blue Police box?" Mica asked Thomas who just shook his head, "What about an alien?"

After a laugh, he replied, "Aliens don't exist except for movie magic and over-eager news people."

Jack had to smile at his naiveté. The rest of the group shared knowing looks.

"We should have drinks," Thomas suggested, getting up and setting Lucia on chair he'd just vacated, "Six glasses of wine and four juices? Yes?"

There was no hesitation until he saw Rhi get up and follow after him. He bounced Iefan and watched until she came back into the room. He had a feeling he knew what she had been doing.

"Everything alright?" Johnny asked and she nodded before kissing him. When they finished, her arm remained around him as they sat on the love seat. She must not want to tell him yet. Jack thought Johnny would be pleased though. He seemed to have a soft-spot for kids.

"Does anyone know where the loo is?" Emyr inquired and Jack pointed toward the rooms in the other corner. Iefan was humming aloud but singing the words in his head. He was loud enough that Jack could hear him.

"Stop it!" Lucia yelled with her hands over her ears.

"It's just a little humming," Mica told her and she shook her head.

"Shh," Jack spoke and rubbed his back until he quieted.

"Ah, here he comes with the drinks," David said with relief when Thomas came back into the room with a container of glasses and two bottles.

"I asked Missy and she said red would do with the meal," Thomas explained and started handing out the glasses along with a plastic Disney cup for Lucia, "Iefan has a sippy cup, I presume?"

Jack took it from a side pocket on the nappy bag and unscrewed the top. Thomas poured grape juice for Iefan, Lucia and Rhi before opening the good stuff for everyone else.
Just one drink, Jack reminded himself. He knew himself. One drink turned into fifteen far too quickly and that's when he started saying things better left unsaid.

"And one for Emyr, he just popped into the loo," David said and held out his hand for a second one.

"Right, of course," Thomas told him with a little too much enthusiasm as he did so, "He is your fiance, after all."

At least he was trying, thought Jack and drank some of his wine.

"Lucia, let's have a staring contest," Mica suggested and went over to her.

"How do you play that?" the girl asked and folded her arms after putting her cup down.

"We look each other in the eyes and the first person to blink or close their eyes loses," she explained with a smile.
