Chapter Seven: Eight Weeks Along

Chapter Eight: Nine Weeks Along

"I'm going to change my shirt. Just take a seat if you want," Jack said and left him alone with the rest of them. Mickey was watching something on the telly that looked like it could be a sex scene from The Tudors.

"Just another day at the office, the horrors of making a website" he joked, "We haven't scared you off, yeah?"

The blender was loud enough for them to hear and he had to wait for a lull before answering, "No, but do all of you live with him?"

"Yeah, Jack, me, John, Owen and Andy, we're all housemates," Mickey admitted and must have seen Ianto's perplexed look so he continued, "No, it's not that any of us are really that hard up for money, it's just...it gets lonely especially for Jack, you know..."

Ianto wasn't sure he did know by that tone, but he understood not wanting to be alone. It was why he liked living with his sister's family.

"Hello," said Toshiko coming up to him.

"Hi," Ianto told her.

"My name's Toshiko," she rambled in a nervous way, "Most people call me Tosh, but not because I'm rubbish."

"Right," he acknowledged and wondered if there was a point or if this was just conversation.

"I heard you were pregnant," she said with intense brown eyes.

"Saw the commercial during X-Factor, did you?" Ianto quipped.

"I wondered how it was possible because unless it's a prosthetic, you do have a bulge in your trousers, but your breasts imply that your body's feminizing which might mean that you have a vagina," she spoke, "so, what are your plans for the birth? Natural? Lots of pain-killers? You could always have a c-section."

She had a point. If he was growing a uterus and a cervix, then it would naturally progress to growing a vagina. He didn't want a vagina and an exit for the baby to come out. It wasn't what he was planning on.

"I had assumed I would be having a c-section with lots of drugs," he said and tried not to let the worry show. Was he going to have to study breathing and the stuff from the antenatal classes, like Rhi and Johnny did?

"Are you hungry?" Tosh asked.

"I'm okay right now, thank you," he told her.

"How are your levels? Are you supposed to take in the same vitamin levels as a pregnant female or did they increase certain ones? Is the calorie count the same? Have there been any unusual symptoms?" she asked and rubbed her hands together, "I wish I could study you."

Ianto looked around for a way out or maybe he could go looking for Jack's room, anything but answering more of her questions. To his relief, Jack came into the room. He could kiss him right then and there.

"All right, let's go. See you guys later," Jack announced and they left the house. His pocket vibrated and he hoped work wouldn't interfere with his evening out. This was far too important. He took it out and saw that it was a text message from Rhi. She wanted to know how the date was going.

************************************************************

Jack finished up his London Particular just before Ianto did and it shouldn't be long before they came with main entrees. He liked how this restaurant had the deck overlooking the park. It felt less confined than some of the others.

"Having a baby was definitely not at the top of my To Do list," Ianto admitted before taking a small sip of his water. He seemed uncomfortable, but it was probably nerves. Jack wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do either.

"Not mine either," Jack spoke and crossed his arms.

"I mean, I wanted kids, but not until I was in my thirties and secure in my job and met the perfect bloke and I wouldn't have been physically having it," Ianto said and he was starting to look a bit pale.

"Not too many men would be planning on physically having babies," Jack joked and hoped to see a trace of a smile from the other man.

"Gentleman, I have your entrees," the waiter announced after walking up to their table. Both of them had ordered the Roast Gloucester old Spot, Red Cabbage and Bramley Apple which gave them something to laugh about at the time. It smelled good to Jack. However, Ianto was swaying.

"Sir, are you alright?" asked the waiter and Ianto shook his head before fleeing the table. Jack hoped he made it to the loo in time.

"I think we should have the bill now," Jack told the waiter.

"Would you like the food wrapped up?" the waiter asked. Jack shook his head. If it was the food smell that bought it on, he didn't want Ianto vomiting later.

*****************************************************

"I'm sorry about earlier," Ianto apologized, "The table behind us was eating fish and then with the new smells from our food...it was too much."

"That's okay," Jack spoke in a soft voice and squeezed his hand. It felt nice, that brief moment of touching even though it took throwing up for it to happen. He tried to concentrate on their shopping excursion.

"I think there's a point where this isn't supposed to happen so often," Ianto stated in a hopeful tone.

"We could go to a bookstore next and look it up," Jack suggested and he liked this new side to him. He was trying to be helpful and supportive.
"I'd like that," he agreed and picked up one of the pieces of clothing in front of him. They were in some store called Jojo Maman Bebe and surrounded by baby things: clothes, toys, furniture and everything else. There were so many different varieties, sizes, and colors. He had a flashback to shopping for the pregnancy tests in Boots, but he couldn't just put the entire store into a basket here. Ianto picked up the nearest piece of clothing. They were blue linen trousers...maternity wear. He hadn't thought about maternity wear. He wouldn't be able to wear his fitted suits forever. Would it work to buy sizes for a fatter man or would he have to invest in some of these things using elastic? He shuddered at the thought of his clothes containing elastic.

"Look at this," Jack said while holding up a pink, striped romper, "I would have called this a romper but it calls it a 'baby striped all-in-one'."

How did Jack know about romper suits? Did he have relatives with babies? Did his family have gatherings? Ianto took it from him and looked at the size and his belly. How was that supposed to work?

"That's what's going to be inside me?" Ianto asked and gulped. Jack took it back and held it against him so his head just above the neckline.

"And it'll look just like this," Jack told him, but he was trying to make him feel better.

"Maybe it'll look more like me," Ianto suggested with a smile.

"Maybe," Jack agreed and reached over to kiss him. The young man wasn't used to being that open in public yet Jack's scent was one of the few things his body could stand. Actually, he smelled even better than before because he could smell everything better.

"Let's check out that bookstore," Jack suggested and he nodded.

************************************************************

Jack stepped out of the clothing store and spotted the bookstore a few stores down.

"I'll race you," he told Ianto who gave him an exasperated look.

"You can't be serious," the other man stated.

"So, you already acknowledge I will win?" Jack spoke with a grin.

"No, that's not...fine, you're on," Ianto agreed and got into a runner's stance, "Three...Two...One..Go!"

They ran to the front of the store while side-stepping prams and plants.

"Ha!" Ianto declared, "And that's with throwing up earlier and being pregnant."

"Obviously," Jack spoke with a hand on his chin, "the baby must have been some kind of advantage." Ianto rolled his eyes.

"Time to find the baby books," he continued before they entered the store. There was a whole section which hadn't changed much since the last time he'd needed it except the books were updated.

"They seem very..." Ianto started and hesitated for a second, "thorough."

There was one book that seemed standard whenever someone around him fell pregnant. One would almost think it was handed out at conception, but obviously, not. He took it off the shelf, held it up and read the title, "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

"What can we expect?" Ianto asked.

"Well, you can’t eat sushi. You can’t smoke. You can’t smoke marijuana. You can’t smoke crack. And you can’t jump on trampolines. This is basically a giant list of things you can’t do," said Jack as he skimmed through it. A glance at Ianto's face told Jack that this wasn't really helpful. Why did people like that book so much?

"Can't wait," Ianto quipped and scanned the other titles. He picked out a few more.

"I’m going be sitting there on the trampoline with my sushi and you’re not going to have anything to do. You’re going to be bored," Jack spoke because it seemed like the thing to do. He picked out a second copy of each book Ianto picked out.

"But I can’t wait to read these, honestly. I will put these in front of my toilet and they’ll be read by tomorrow morning. Do you want me to get that for you?" he asked and saw that look in Ianto's blue eyes. It was the look of a man whose masculinity had been questioned. He picked up his stack, walked a few steps and stopped.

"I can't even carry books," he complained as Jack took them from him.

"You did throw up earlier and then I made you run here. It's fine," Jack said, "You're pregnant now. You can't do everything you used to."

To his horror, Ianto looked like he was going to cry so Jack put one arm around him.

"It's only eight more months," he whispered until Ianto nodded, "you can do this."

"Only eight more months," the other repeated, "I can do this." They walked towards the cash register.

********************************************************

Rhi turned out the light and leaned back against the pillow. Johnny's hand cupped her breast.

"Really?" she asked at his lazy foreplay.

"No?" Johnny questioned in a confused tone.

"No, I think I might be having PMT or something," she said and turned her back to him.

"Guess it won't happen then," her husband gave in with a sigh, "at least I won't get pregnant like your brother."

"You can't get pregnant from me," she stated, "You'd have to be sleeping around with blokes. You're not, right?"

"Of course not," he replied and she sighed. Her little brother was up the duff and he was only twenty-four. Rhi realized she was just twenty when she had David, but that was different and not just because Ianto was a man. Johnny had stepped up and married her once she found out she was pregnant. She didn't trust this Jack to do the same or even if that was the right thing. They barely knew the man.

"We have to help him," she said into the darkness.

"I think they'll be fine. They'll sort it out...look at us. It happened to us," Johnny uttered beside her.

"We'll help him raise the baby," Rhi stated in that voice which declared that a conversation was over. Johnny sighed.

*****************************************************

Ianto dropped his new books on the coffee table as Jack stood inside his place. The other man was still in his coat but eyeing the stand as if wondering if he should hang it up. This was the moment where he'd either tell Jack to have a great night or that he should hang up that coat. He couldn't help being nervous and Jack's scent wasn't helping things. It made him want to do things to him right on the coffee table. Maybe they could have a drink; alcohol for Jack and milk or whatever suitable was in the fridge for Ianto. He took a few steps to carry out this plan and Jack stepped towards him. In an instant, their lips locked and Jack had his hands on Ianto's body. Stupid pregnancy was affecting him in ways he hadn't imagined. He knew through skimming the books that it had mentioned something about increased blood flow, but this was ridiculous. He'd become hard just from a little kissing.

"At least we don't have to use a condom," Jack said and some of the mood went away. Ianto pushed himself from Jack's embrace.

"But we could if that's what you want," Jack suggested after this development.

"It's not that," Ianto told him because it wasn't entirely that.

"It's just, I thought we could get a little...fun out of your situation," Jack said and Ianto rewarded him with a glare.

"My situation," he repeated as if he could make the other man realize his mistake. It took two people to make this situation.

"Yeah," Jack agreed and Ianto put his hands on his hips.

"Just because I'm pregnant, I'm not some ruined woman and all romance goes out the door," he spoke and Jack finally seemed to understand.

"I'm sorry. I like you a lot. That's all this is," Jack said and crossed his arms. His face softened and his blue eyes were a little sad.

"I like you, too," Ianto admitted aloud what he had barely been able to process internally.

"Good," the other commented in a non-committal fashion. It was fine. Nothing had to be decided tonight.

"I mean, we have eight months before the baby comes. We don't have to rush it," said Ianto although he was stepping closer to Jack again.

"Yeah," Jack agreed with a nod.

"We should really just try to get to know each other and...give this a real shot. Even though, we got ourselves into this situation so we kind of have to," Ianto stated and hated how it seemed like he was trying to convince himself. He liked Jack. He liked his scent and his looks and his smile, but none of that was the basis for a long-lasting relationship.

"For the baby, right?" Jack asked in a soft voice.

"Exactly, okay, if this was our second date, what would you do?" Ianto questioned him.

"I never actually have a second date," he claimed.

"Then, hypothetically, what would you like on a second date?" Ianto asked and wondered how he kept being nearer and nearer without realizing it.

"Oral sex, if I'm just being honest..."

"Oral sex?" Ianto interrupted in surprise.

"You sucking me off to be specific," Jack elaborated and Ianto shook his head. However, he had to work with this. Parenting took compromise and he might as well start now.

"Only if I get something out of this as well," he said with a finger running up Jack's blue-buttoned shirt.

"Yeah?" Jack confirmed and Ianto nodded. He leaned over and kissed him on the lips.

"You're a nice guy, right?" Ianto asked after pulling away.

"I think I am," Jack replied.

"Don't fuck me over, yeah," Ianto told him and couldn't help that his tone was a little pleading. He'd seen it before at work, usually with the temps. They'd meet some bloke they thought was great but as soon as that pee-test was positive...he was long gone.

"I wouldn't do that," Jack spoke and added softly, "but don't you die on me, okay?"

Torchwood employees did have a habit of dying early. However, there was no way Jack could know that.

"Okay," he agreed, "but that means you can't die either."

A weird laugh came from Jack's lips before he turned serious, saying, "I couldn't take it. I can't raise this baby alone."

The first thing he wanted to do was to brighten Jack's mood. He had thought he would prefer Jack to be more serious, but he realized he didn't care for it much at all.

"You won't," he promised and kissed him until he felt Jack's hand on his ass. Then, he pulled away.

"Actually, if I was to die, I'd want the baby to be raised by my sister," he revealed and saw the hurt look on Jack's face, "I'm sorry, I may be having a baby with you, but I don't know you. Rhi's raising two kids already. I know them."

Maybe when he and Jack became more comfortable together, he could change his mind. He hoped that Jack would show there was more to him than a flippant manwhore. As Ianto watched, Jack recovered his previous expression with a smile as though nothing had happened. Maybe that had to do with the brain damage.

"That's all the more reason for you not to die, at least not until I can prove myself," Jack suggested and Ianto nodded. Jack locked his lips with his and his hands roamed over his body. Ianto felt a need to press his erection against Jack's own through their trousers and Jack moaned.

"Oh, that's it," he said before nodding towards the bedroom and Ianto smiled.
