Chapter Seventeen: Twenty-eight Weeks Along

As Ianto was vomiting in the bin, he felt a strong hand rubbing his back and knew it belonged to Jack.

"Are you sure you want to do this? Maybe you should rest instead," he whispered and Ianto appreciated the concern. It felt nice.

"She's my sister, I have to do this," Ianto whispered back to him.

"Right," Jack spoke with a groan. Was that what his lying earlier was? Not wanting Ianto to go?

"If you're that concerned, come with us," Ianto retorted before rinsing his mouth out.

***********************************************************

Jack sat in the back of Rhi's vehicle as they pulled into the car park. The address Rhi had assumed to be a flat number was looking more like an office number. She shut the door and gave the keys to Ianto. Jack leaned over towards the passenger seat.

"She doesn't have a gun, does she?" Jack asked because while he and Ianto did, there was no way he wanted Rhi to have one.

"No, I don't think so," Ianto answered and that wasn't as reassuring as he'd hoped.

"Oh, great," Jack stated and exited the car. He didn't want Rhi to make a bigger scene than necessary. Ianto followed after him, but he'd keep an eye on him. At least the vomiting had only been the last couple of hours.

"What do you mean I can't come in? That's my husband in there! I don't care if it's an office building. It's 8 PM at night!" Rhi yelled at the security guard and she might have started before they were in hearing range.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but I can't let just anyone in. I wouldn't be doing my job then, now would I?" he asked and was about to launch into more explanation when he saw Jack. There were few things more awkward than running into a former lover. Nicholas was a little older now yet still recognizable. Of course, Jack was always recognizable. He clasped a hand on Ianto's shoulder and Nicholas nodded.

"Oh, give me a moment with the doors. It's all electronic, you know," he said with a forced laugh and hit some buttons in his box. Ianto looked back at him as the doors opened. He shrugged except it didn't seem like Ianto liked that answer.

"He's an ex," Jack whispered while Rhi hurried to the lift.

"Yep, gathered," Ianto spoke without looking at him. Jack took his hand as they went into the very small space. He liked that Ianto squeezed back. The doors opened on the thirty-third storey and they walked out.

"Looks like no one's here," Jack said and wished they would leave. Empty office buildings were only fun when you had a partner who hadn't throwing up all night and was less pregnant.

"This has to be the right floor. Wait here," Rhi told them and started out on her own.

"I feel bad for Johnny," Jack said and coughed.

"What?" asked Ianto, staring at him.

"This isn't a good way to be caught cheating. It shouldn't be like this," Jack spoke as they still stood by the lift doors.

"And there are good ways to be caught cheating?" Ianto quipped, "Well, maybe he should have thought of that before he was cheating."

Jack did another fake cough while calling out, "Johnny!"

"Stop it," Ianto said, but it was in a teasing way.

"Only a cough," Jack claimed and they were almost alone. Rhi was far down the corridor.

"There's nobody around," she said with her arms crossed.

"Thank you, can we go now?" Jack asked because he really thought Ianto needed to rest and he didn't want to witness anything too domestic.

"I guess I was wrong," Rhi said in confusion.

"I told you," Jack spoke and motioned towards the lift doors.

"Yeah, come on. Let's go," she agreed and started walking back towards them. Then, they heard a noise coming behind her.

"Did you hear that?" Rhi asked and turned around. Ianto simply asked, "What?"

"I didn't hear anything," Jack said although it was too late. He knew a determined woman when he saw one.

"Come on," Ianto told him and swung their linked hands forward. They followed her into an office packed with four guys in football jerseys.

"Ten seconds," said one Jack knew to be Gwen's husband Rhys.

"Daniel Agger," Johnny spoke with a sense of accomplishment.

"Excellent choice. Too bad I got him three rounds ago," said a man who looked about the same age as Rhys.

"You're still on the clock," an older gentleman reminded them. He wore a blue knit cap and a beard full of white whiskers. Jack wondered if he should know him.

"Oh shit!" Johnny complained and his eyebrows furrowed in thought.

"You gotta do something. We need a name here," Rhys reminded him.

"Steve Finnan," Johnny spoke.

"Ugh, he was one of my best guys last year," the other young guy complained.

"Sorry, Charlie," Johnny said with a grin.

"What is this?" Rhi asked with her arms stretched towards the whole room. There was crimson all over her face.

"Rhi," Johnny stated in surprise.

"What the fuck is this?" Rhi asked with more fury.

"It's our fantasy football draft," he explained while holding a piece of paper.

"We said no wives," said the other younger man, "Ianto maybe, we could probably make an exception for him."

"Your fantasy what?" Rhi inquired.

"Cheers, Colin," Ianto retorted with a glare.

"How many times have I told you? It's Banana Boat, we're friends now," said the young man with a grin. Ianto rolled his eyes and replied, "Just stay away from Lanzarote."

Jack wondered what the story was between the two of them.

"It’s, it’s our draft...for fantasy football. I told you all about this. Got Finnan," Johnny spoke and Rhi was shaking her head. Then, she turned and started walking out of the room.

"Aw, shit," Johnny spat and stood up to follow her.

"Rhys, Wilf, always a pleasure," Ianto joked as Johnny left the room.

"Of course," Wilf said and Rhys nodded. Jack and Ianto followed suit although he could still hear Rhys call out, "Bye, Jack."

Maybe Ianto didn't hear it. However, he turned back to glare at Jack. Nope, he'd heard. First, they had to settle this mess between Johnny and Rhi. He'd hoped that the lift doors would close before they reached it, but that wish didn't come true either. Ianto caught the door in time and held it open for Jack to come in. Johnny and Rhi were on opposite sides of the small lift.

"I should have told you," Johnny admitted and Jack waited to see how Rhi would reply.

"What else have you been lying about?" she spat.

"Nothing," Johnny claimed.

"You knew everyone in there?" Jack asked because they weren't from Torchwood.

"Where were you on Wednesday?" Rhi accused with a glower.

"I'm going to be honest with you," Johnny uttered and Jack knew this couldn't end well from his tone.

"Yep and you knew Rhys," Ianto spoke and his blue eyes were staring at him with intensity.

"I make it my business to know," Jack replied with a shrug.

"That would be a good idea," Rhi agreed and played with her wedding ring.

"You’ve been mad because I’ve been working so much and I didn’t want to upset you," Johnny spoke before sticking his hands in his pockets.

"I wouldn't be mad," Rhi claimed and even Jack didn't believe her.

"You would be," Johnny stated.

"I don't get mad," she said and Jack had to turn around towards the wall as he refrained from laughing.

"It's a fantasy football draft. I'm not cheating or anything," Johnny told her.

"No, this is worse," Rhi maintained and he noticed Ianto's awkward stance. It wouldn't improve anything to interfere, but he must hate to see his sister like that.

"How is this worse?" Johnny asked in angry tone.

"This is you wanting to be with your friends more than your family," Rhi said and pointed her finger. Jack went for Ianto's hand. The first time, he shook him off. However, the second time, he accepted it.

"Look, the reason I make that up is because if I told you what I was really doing, you would just get mad. So, you think I’m seeing a band, I do my fantasy draft, and it’s win/win," he said, walking towards her. She moved closer to Ianto.

"Well, what did you do last Wednesday night when you said you went to see a band?" she asked.

"I went to the movies," he replied and she shook her head.

"With who?" Rhi asked and from the way she was only looking at Johnny, Jack wondered what he was supposed to be doing during this exchange.

"By myself," Johnny told her.

"What'd you see?" she questioned.

"Spider-man 3," he said as Ianto rubbed his belly with his other hand.

"Why do you want to go by yourself? Why didn’t you ask me to go?" Rhi asked with hurt in her voice and a shiny look in her brown eyes.

"Because I needed to get away, you know? With work and you and the kids, sometimes I just need some time to myself," Johnny uttered and Jack wished he was somewhere else. Even battling a Yeti would be preferable to this.

"I need time for myself. I want time for myself, too," said Rhi and she looked close to tears, "You’re not the only one."

"It’s not that big of a deal," Johnny claimed with a shrug. He should have just apologized.

"I like Spiderman," Rhi complained and stared at the bottom of the lift.

"Okay, so let’s see 'Spiderman Three' next week," Johnny suggested.

"I don’t want to go see it now," Rhi spoke with a trace of anger hiding in her voice.

"Well..." Johnny started and slipped a hand down the back of his head.

"I don’t want to have to ask you to ask me. I want you to just come up with it on your own," Rhi spoke while striding a few steps closer to him and pointing with her finger.

"What? I don’t even know what to say. Uh, what do you want me to do?" Johnny asked in a soft voice and gestured to himself.

"You just think because you don’t yell that you’re not mean, but this is mean," Rhi complained and Ianto held Jack's hand tighter. Apparently, Johnny had no skill with this sort of thing whatsoever.

"I’m not being mean. I’m being honest. You’re telling me I need to be honest. Just--" Johnny started before being interrupted by the lift reaching the end of its journey. The "1" flashed and the doors opened. They walked into the entry.

"No, you’re not. You’re lying," Rhi spat in a similar temper as he had seen in Ianto before.

"I’m doing it because I need to keep my sanity a little bit," Johnny uttered as he walked backwards towards the exit. He turned around to open the door and Jack saw that Nicholas was watching them while eating crisps as though they were a telly drama.

"You know what? I don’t want you at the house anymore. Okay?" Rhi screamed at him.

"You've got to be joking," Johnny retorted and looked back at her. She ignored him as she exited in the direction of the car park.

"We should have taken one of our cars," Jack said and Ianto gave him a glare.

*********************************************************

Ianto grimaced in the driver's seat the next day. He had insisted on driving. However, he'd just had one of those Braxton-Hicks contractions and Jack was looking at his mobile instead of him. It wasn't pleasant. He hated to think how painful the real contractions would be which is why he was still planning on surgery despite Martha's wishes.

"If the appointment isn't for another hour or so, can you drop me off at Wapping? Something's just come up," Jack said and Ianto was glad he hadn't mentioned who needed his presence this bad. Was John insisting on a pint in the Captain Kidd? Were Andy and Tosh trying to track down old pirate ghosts? He didn't even want to know as long as he was at the appointment on time. Actually, it was probably better this way. Ianto had received a text from Torchwood to meet them at an address in Shadwell.

"Fine," Ianto agreed and shook his head, "I cannot stop thinking about the utter shit between Rhi and Johnny."

"That's a little strong, I would say," Jack commented and rested an arm against the door. Ianto waved at Andy who stood on the pavement as they drove by.

"Really? Because that had to be one of the most selfish things I’ve ever witnessed," Ianto said and he didn't just mean Rhi and Johnny. The night before had also further fueled his suspicions that Jack was hiding things from him.

"It’s understandable. I even think it’s kind of funny," Jack spoke and Ianto didn't even need to look over to know he was grinning.

"What’s funny about it?" he asked because there was nothing amusing about this.

"Well, you won’t laugh now, I wouldn’t imagine, but you know, the situation. We break into this stranger’s office, thinking we’re going to find him sleeping with a woman, and then it’s a bunch of blokes playing whatever that was. If you saw that on the telly, you'd laugh," Jack persisted and Ianto sighed.

"Is that what you think?" he asked before passing a Datsun, "and I suppose you feel he was justified in keeping this secret from her?"

"Yeah," Jack replied and Ianto rolled his eyes.

"Is that what you want to do, Jack? Or is that why you live in that house? Are you ever going to be honest with me?" Ianto asked and put his signal on to turn onto a different street. Which laconic answer would he receive this time?

"I don’t even like that sort of game. I’m just saying when you’re a guy and you have a family and you have responsibility, sometimes you lose that male camaraderie and I get that. I totally understand where he’s coming from," Jack insisted and he resisted the urge for a sudden brake.

"Of course, which you know since you've had a family before? Am I going to masculine enough for you? Or do my tits disqualify me? Or maybe my fanny since I let you stick your dick inside it? Why do you guys always go to that place? You miss male camaraderie. I don't recall ever using that as an excuse in any relationship, but you know what? I give up," Ianto complained and felt his voice rising as he continued, "Why do I give a shit about what you do or what you don't tell me? Go hang out with your weird friends. I don’t care. You want to keep all your secrets and not let anyone know the real you, it’s all on you, man."

"Well, what the fuck am I supposed to say to that?" Jack asked and he was a little pleased how hurt he sounded.

"Since I'm the fucking pregnant one, you should just support me! You know, you should just support everything I say because at this juncture in my life, I’m allowed to be wrong!" Ianto screamed at him.

"So if you’re wrong, I have to support it?" Jack questioned.

"Yes!" Ianto yelled and was glad they were in his car with a roof.

"I can’t tell you that you’re acting like a lunatic?" Jack growled.

"Oh, that’s helpful. You don't have to do anything!" Ianto screamed and hit the horn out of frustration. The elderly man gave him two fingers, but it was worth it.

"I have to do everything. You have no idea how much I've sacrificed..."

"You are just fucking sitting there! You haven’t sacrificed anything! I told you everything and you tell me almost nothing. You never even introduced me to Alice!" Ianto yelled. Then, Jack tried to put a hand on his thigh, but he removed it.

"I was going to tell you everything and introduce you to Alice, I was," Jack claimed in a soft voice.

"Ha! I’ve had to sacrifice my body, my youth, my masculinity! Possibly my job. You can't do the simplest relationship requirements!" Ianto complained.

"I do things!" Jack retorted and Ianto waited for an elaboration. When it didn't come, he said, "See, you can't even name one."

"I go to all of your baby appointments," Jack pointed out and Ianto rolled his eyes.

"Because I pick you up for each and every single one of them!" he screamed and felt a little dizzy.

"You're right! Fine! I'm a horrible boyfriend. I'm a horrible father. Are you happy now?" Jack asked and crossed his arms. Ianto still felt dizzy and light-headed with only one possible solution. He slammed on the brakes and pulled off to the side to park at the curb.

"You know what? Get out of car!" Ianto yelled and gestured for him to leave.

"Oh! You know what? Why don’t you not threaten me?! What am I supposed to do?" Jack asked as Ianto unbuckled his seat-belt to put things into motion.

"You should just get out of the fucking car," Ianto complained while breathing heavily.

"You're not supposed to get upset. It's bad for the baby," Jack reminded him and Ianto started shoving him towards the door.

"Get out of the car," Ianto spat and Jack tried to kiss him on the lips. Ianto slapped him.

"No, I'm not leaving!" Jack yelled and made himself immovable to Ianto's efforts.

"I own this car! Get out of my car!" Ianto screamed and hoped he'd made his point.

"No," Jack spoke and he wanted to hit him some more.

"Get out of my car!" Ianto yelled at him.

"No," Jack insisted, "Not until you calm down."
