Chapter Twenty-Four: Aftermath
Jack and Owen had moved Ianto and the baby to the master bedroom along with a baby monitor. One was kept with Ianto and the other was carried by Owen at all times. Ianto slept while Jack lay beside him with the baby in his arms. They closed all the curtains so it was dark and adjusted the thermostat so it was warmer. Jack slipped part of the cloth from her face so he could see her eyes. Then, he realized she was asleep.
"That's okay, I could watch you sleep for hours," he told her, "Do you want to hear how you came along? Your daddies were going to have sex and then your other daddy said, 'Just do it, already,' which was very confusing to daddy. So I listened to the most literal translation of that and I just did it, already. What would you do? Don’t tell your other daddy, but it was the smartest thing I ever did, listening to him, because now you’re here. Isn’t that nice?"
He tried not to think about Owen waiting downstairs in case they needed him or what was going on at Torchwood. Then, his mobile rang.
"Please don't wake up," he told Ianto and the baby and saw it was Alex, "What is it?"
"I need a meeting with you, as soon as you can," the man said on the other end. He was frantic and sounded very unlike himself. Jack didn't trust him.
"Tomorrow at ten a.m." he told him and hung up. Was Alex still intending to follow through on the plan after everything that happened?
*******************************************
Ianto had begun being thankful for small miracles, like his daughter breathing on her own without problems or being able to feed from his breast. He still hadn't decided when Owen suggested that he try, at least for this first time. It would boost her immune system and her immune system needed all the help it could get. He tried not to think about where Jack was or the service weapon Owen was wearing in case someone tried to show up. Then, the baby became still. He panicked until he realised she'd fallen asleep. Ianto took her mouth from his nipple and held her in his arms.
"Did she even get anything? She wasn't sucking very long," he said to Owen sitting on another part of the bed.
"She's only a little over four pounds. She won't need a lot for now," he said and stood up, "I'll bring you a drink from downstairs. She really does need a name, you know. You can't keep calling her the baby for the rest of her life."
And it was going to be a long life if Ianto had any say in the matter...just maybe not as long as Jack's.
"None of the names seem suitable," he complained as she slept and the door downstairs opened. Ianto tensed and wrapped her up. Was this it? He knew he and Jack should have made a plan for running away once the baby was born, but he could never leave Rhi like that. She had been his only family in the world until now. Maybe he had been selfish about keeping that connection instead of just taking his daughter far, far away. He closed his eyes.
"It's Jack," came Owen's voice through the baby monitor and Ianto relaxed. Heavy boots ran up the stairs and Jack appeared in the doorway. Ianto couldn't help noticing the blood on his coat and sad look in his eyes.
"What is it?" he asked and Jack sat beside him.
"It's nothing...it's just...it was a lot," he said and Ianto pleaded, "tell me."
"Every floor has bodies. They're all stacked in neat lines and rows. People we've worked with..." Jack spoke, "I guess it's something you never get used to..."
Ianto tried to imagine it. How many people had died? Were there any that they had known?
"Martha? Gwen? Lisa?" he asked and was going to name others when Jack shook his head.
"Martha has a sprained ankle. Gwen had a concussion and she's in hospital. Lisa...Lisa's dead. Yvonne's dead. Mickey's missing," Jack said in spurts and tears started falling down, "I...I just identified John, not even sure if it was a Cyberman or a Dalek that got him."
Ianto wished he could put an arm around except he didn't want to disturb the baby. He settled for kissing Jack's arm and a sob came out. It didn't seem real.
"How many died?" he asked and Jack sighed.
"Including us, twenty-six survived," he stated and Ianto felt like he had been punched in the gut. They were gone. They were all gone. It was even less real.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this yesterday?" he asked and Jack put an arm around him.
"You were under enough stress as it was," Jack spoke, "I just thought, maybe...maybe if you had her in your arms when I told you, it wouldn't seem so bad."
Even though it felt excruciating, it would have been worse if he had found out during the birth. It might have even made things worse. Then, he had another thought.
"You sent Owen to me when he was probably needed there," he said.
"If I didn't, he might be dead now, too," Jack spoke, "It's been a long time since I've seen something like that, not since the Great War."
Right, Jack was old enough to have served in that.
"But what about Alex? Is he going to take her?" Ianto asked and Jack's grip tightened.
"No, that's not what the meeting was about, not really. He was...he was strange, kept talking about how they had caused all of this and how he should have died, how he should be one of the bodies. I should have known, but I was too in shock. He said they hadn't been ready. Then...then, he shot himself. He's dead."
Ianto's mouth was agape. It was Alex's blood on Jack's coat.
"But...but who's going to run Torchwood? Who's his successor? Will they kidnap our daughter and Steven?" Ianto asked in confusion.
"No, that won't happen. He gave it to me," Jack spoke, "He gave me Torchwood."
It was over. Ianto no longer had to worry about his daughter's future except for her health.
"I just...I keep thinking about if you hadn't had those scares earlier, if Martha hadn't put you on bed rest, you could have been there and," Jack could barely get the words out as he continued, "both of you could be dead now."
"Oh, Jack..." he said and looked at their daughter. He was right. If he hadn't gone into early labour, he might be dead. Owen could be dead.
"You're a lucky, lucky girl, you know that?" he asked the baby who uttered a small sigh, "Lucky...lucky."
An idea popped into Ianto's head.
"Felicity, how about Felicity for her name?" he asked Jack, "It means happiness or luck."
"I think it's beautiful," Jack agreed and kissed him for a second on the lips.
"Jack, Ianto, another car's pulled in, I think it must be your sister," Owen announced over the baby monitor.
"Well, Felicity, time to meet your aunt," he said and Jack went to greet her downstairs.
Felicity Jones
FelicityJones
Felicity Harkness
FelicityHarkness
Felicity ?
Felicity was six months old and healthy with bright blue eyes like her daddies. She had almost caught up to the normal milestones for six month olds. Owen and Martha felt confident that by her first birthday, no one would be able to tell that she had been born eight weeks premature at all. He kissed her cheek and she giggled. She loved to giggle and he loved hearing it. They had moved in with Jack and things seemed to be going well. He was even wearing the ring. Torchwood was coming along. Some things were being rebuilt while other ideas were being abandoned. The Doctor was an active consultant. However, today Ianto had an appointment. Martha had been able to produce an antidote for the fertility drug. It should reverse the results completely.
"And I'll be able to wear my own clothes again," Ianto said with a smile before kissing her cheek again, "but you were the best thing to ever happen to me. I hope you always know that." It had been easier to grow his hair out and wear feminine clothes if they were out in public especially if Felicity was hungry. He put Felicity in her carrier and made sure everything was in the nappy bag. Along the way, he'd stop to pick up some hot chicken soup.
Less than an hour later, Ianto entered the Torchwood building. It was hard to believe so many had died but Jack put a memorial fountain in the lobby. Ianto had read the names on it once yet it was hard when so many had memories attached to them. The list even included Rose and Mickey even though they were alive. However, they were in an alternate universe with no plausible way of ever getting back. Owen and Andy were selling the house to get flats of their own. Andy even hinted that he was going to propose to Tosh.
"It's weird being here again," he whispered about everyone working around them. Ianto had made full use of his maternity leave especially when Felicity had so many special needs at first. Now, she was healthy enough that Martha had agreed on a formula. He hadn't decided whether he would use the other six months yet or come back early. Ianto played with his engagement ring for a second.
"Let's go visit daddy first," he said and went to the lift. Jack's office was the top floor and Bridget smiled at him. She was his secretary and opened the door for Ianto to go in.
"There's Ianto and my girl!" exclaimed Jack who stood up and hurried to them. Jack didn't look any better than this morning. The last few days, it seemed that Jack had caught a bug.
"Were you good for taddy?" Jack asked the baby who enjoyed the attention.
"Always," Ianto answered for her and opened the bag with soup, "I hoped you were feeling better. I bought you some soup."
The smell drifted across the office and Jack seemed to pale. He grimaced and asked, "Are you still having the appointment today?"
Ianto nodded and answered, "And I'll just be a man again."
"You seem male enough to me," Jack retorted in an odd way.
"What? What do you mean by that?" Ianto asked and when Jack was silent, added, "If you have something to say, then say it."
"It's just...oh, the irony," Jack said and swallowed, "I'm pregnant."
"What?" Ianto questioned and shook his head, that didn't make sense. He was the one with a uterus, but Jack fled to the loo and Ianto followed. When he reached him, Jack was throwing up into the bowl and Ianto certainly remembered that part.
"Fuck," Ianto said as Jack finished up.
"That's real supportive," Jack spat before rinsing his mouth. He was right. Ianto wasn't being better than Jack had been in the same situation. However, it would be a lot of work.
"We're going to have two babies under two or possibly one depending on how far along you are which means twice as many bottles and nappies and screaming," Ianto pointed out and felt the shock and anger leaving him, "Have you seen Martha yet?"
"No, I haven't really had time," Jack said and Ianto sighed. He was going to have to take better care of himself.
"Martha's seeing me anyway so you're coming with me," Ianto spoke although it looked like Jack was going to argue, "Felicity, tell your daddy he's being stupid and if he's pregnant, he needs to be checked out just like I did."
Their daughter just stared at both of them with big blue eyes and a confused expression.
"Fine, let's go," Jack agreed and they made their way to the medical exam rooms.
"Ianto, you're early. Jack, you didn't need to come," said Martha with a smile.
"It's not that, Jack thinks he's pregnant," Ianto informed her. Martha crossed her arms and turned to Jack, asking, "I thought you said you weren't capable anymore?"
Anymore? Jack shrugged and Ianto remembered a conversation they had had once. The men in my time...Men could be pregnant naturally without drugs or implants.
"You never told me you could get pregnant," Ianto complained, "I make you wear condoms, I would understand if you wanted me to do the same."
"As I told Martha, I haven't been pregnant in over a century so I just assumed it wasn't possible anymore," he said.
"Anything is possible with Torchwood, Felicity is proof of that," Ianto spoke and gestured toward their daughter.
"Jack, I think you remember the drill from Ianto's pregnancy: up on the table and tops off," Martha ordered and closed the door behind them. Ianto set the nappy bag down and Felicity babbled from her carrier on Ianto's chest. Ianto watched as Martha set up the equipment and squeezed the gel on Jack's abdomen. Then, she ran the wand over it and he found himself waiting with bated breath. A cavity appeared on the screen, similar to a uterus and it wasn't empty. A very small baby wiggled and turned inside.
"Wow," Ianto spoke at seeing the child he'd fathered.
"Yeah," Jack agreed and went from looking at the large screen to his belly. Ianto hadn't noticed the slight curve to it.
"How far along is it?" Ianto asked because it seemed farther than the six or eight weeks he'd been assuming.
"Just running some calculations based on the measurements," she explained, checking the monitors, "Got it...eleven weeks along."
"You're almost into your second trimester already," Ianto remarked with surprise and Felicity grabbed at his breast. He took her out of the carrier and held her so she could see the large screen.
"That's going to be your brother or sister," he told her and pointed. Jack was smiling.
"I could tell you right now what it will probably be," Martha offered and the two men looked at each other.
"It's Jack's decision," Ianto said.
"Then, I want to know," Jack spoke.
"It's a boy!" she said and they laughed, "She's going to have a brother as a birthday present." Felicity continued grabbing his breast and started to whine.
"I think she cares more about her next meal," Ianto said and undid his shirt so she could suck. This was the only thing he'd miss about not having his girlie parts anymore. He'd grown to like these moments between just the two of them. It was a little selfish, but he liked being able to do something for her that nobody else could. It didn't even hurt once he'd gotten used to it.
"So, you're happy about the baby now?" Jack asked with a worried expression. Ianto leaned over and kissed him while keeping Felicity in place.
"It was just shock and it will be a lot of work, but we can do it," he said, "and it'll be nice not to be the one giving birth. Are you going to have breasts to feed him?"
"Well, no, I stay the same, just with a much bigger belly," Jack explained while he dressed, "I'll only produce enough for that first feeding or two."
Their son wouldn't have the same experience their daughter had, it didn't seem right.
"Jack, I know you have no one to report to so for the duration of this pregnancy, I'm your boss and you're off active duty. I plan to do my very best to make sure you go full-term with him and there's plenty of people who can help with the work-load," said Martha while Jack finished with the rest of his clothes, "and Ianto, I can get that dosage ready."
Ianto looked at Felicity sucking with a smile on her face.
"I can't do it," he told them and their faces were shocked.
"Why? Did you realize you like being a woman?" Jack asked with a smirk from the table, "or maybe it was the sex."
"I just adore tampons and all that entails," Ianto said and rolled his eyes, "You wouldn't be able to breast-feed him and I don't want to give him formula, not after breast-feeding her. I want him to have that, too."
He gestured to their daughter having her meal.
"You would have to keep your female characteristics for at least another year," Martha stated in a serious tone.
"I know, but it's our children. I'd do anything for them," he said.
"Are you sure?" Jack asked and placed an arm on his shoulder.
"Yep, I just have a few conditions," Ianto spoke, "like not having another one after this."
Jack seemed to be thinking about that a long time so he added, "at least, not for awhile and I want a proper honeymoon requiring hotel room, extra transportation and babysitter when we get married. Deal?"
He watched for what Jack's answer would be.
"That sounds great to me," he said and they kissed before Ianto's hand reached down to rest on Jack's belly.
