Puppies Make Things Better
"What? So they think...they think it might be cancer or something?" Johnny asked and was able to say the word she couldn't. She nodded again and he held her tight.
"Mum...," Mica started and Rhi shook her head. She hated admitting it, but she just couldn't deal with them right now.
"I'm going to lie down," she said and Johnny let her go. She was half-way on her way to the stairs when she heard a little voice call, "Modi!"
Rhi looked down to see Iefan with a puzzled look on his face. He would be too young to understand what was going on. Another thought struck her.
"Jack isn't around, is he?" she asked, glancing around any sign of him.
"No, he got called into work so I said I'd watch him," Mica spoke and Rhi was relieved. She didn't want Jack knowing yet since he didn't tend to take those sorts of things well. As she walked up the stairs, she tried to push out all the thoughts that threatened to overwhelm her.

David put his coat on the rack next to Emyr's in their flat later that night. His dad had ordered pizza in the hopes that the smell would bring their mum downstairs again, but she hadn't showed. Here in his own domain, it seemed less real like he had imagined the whole thing.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Emyr asked while laying a hand on his shoulder.
"I don't know," he admitted, "I don't know what to feel."
His mum had looked so scared and sad. He hadn't seen her that way since Nan died even though Nan had never meant much to him because he had seen her even less than he'd seen his Uncle Ianto. Emyr held him close and kissed his cheek.
*********************************************************************
Jack sat in a chair in the garden. He could make out stars in the sky or he pretended they were stars. In reality, they were more likely to be satellites and visitors. It was New Year's Eve and he was alone. Lois had arranged a party in the Hub, but she would be the single attendee he really knew. Gwen was having a quiet night at home and Rhi wasn't feeling well. He heard the bang of fireworks and looked at his watch: midnight. It was now 2018. He sang in a soft voice, but it didn't feel very festive. His thoughts turned to Italy. He'd tried calling Alice earlier. However, it wasn't returned. Jack glanced at his glass of water and wondered if there was something stronger in the house. He went to the house to look.
*************************************************************
Gwen couldn't resist opening the drawer and slamming so the loud noise reverberated through the space.Lois and Bernie both groaned but she shared a smile with Selene. If they drank enough to have a hangover, she was going to have fun with them. What if they had a Weevil sighting or worse? Gwen had no plans to call Jack in today...not unless they had no other choice. He and the Jones were exchanging their Christmas presents today and she didn't want anything to interrupt that.
***********************************************************
Mica reveled in that post-gift giving glow where all seemed right with the world. Jack was laughing with Johnny over something. She liked hearing him laugh and their house hadn't had enough of that at the moment. Jack still had no idea. Her mum had made them promise not to say anything and they didn't want to upset her. She insisted she would tell him when the time was right or if there was anything to tell. Jack and Johnny were both drinking beer as they stood in the kitchen. Jack was so hard to buy for and if they had known ahead of time, they could have bought him a BluRay player. However, his gift had already been bought before Italy. Mica and David had both given him toy replicas of planes from World War II since he seemed to like that era. She guessed he had flown them when they were new. She was pretty sure her dad's favourite gift had been Johnny giving him the rugby tickets. Mica caught him giving her mum a smile. Rhi was playing with her toy. They'd all chipped in to give her the newest iPad. If only her mum didn't seem so tired, she tried to hide it but Mica could tell she was scared about the test in less than two weeks. She walked over and hugged her.
"What was that for?" Rhi asked since her signs of physical affection were rare which made Mica feel bad.
"Just because," she said with a shrug and her mum shook her head like she was crazy. Iefan pulled on her shirt and told Rhi, "Help, Modi." He pointed at the toy train set that Emyr was piecing together.
"Emyr should have just let Jack do it at home," Rhi commented and rolled her eyes, "He'll learn."
"Taddy, help!" Iefan screamed and ran towards Jack as Mica and her mum went to help Emyr and David. They were wearing matching metal bands on the other hand that they'd picked up cheap on Boxing Day. Mica almost wondered if Emyr was overcompensating for not knowing Iefan that well. Emyr and David were in Cardiff most of the time which meant that Italy was the first time they were around him on a daily basis although they had kept him overnight once in a pinch. David was still removing large plastic pieces out of the box. Iefan led his dad by the hand and picked up his sippy cup of chocolate milk. So far, it was staying intact. David handed the engine to Iefan who ran it across the blue carpet.
"ChooChoo!" the toddler called and crashed it into Mica's foot.
"No, that's me," she told him and directed it away before they started clicking the track together on the floor.
********************************************************
"I did it," Emyr declared proudly as they drove home.
"Yes, you did but in the future, you don't have to do everything that a toddler tells you to. He won't hate you forever or anything," David informed him with a chuckle.
"I know, I just hate when he does that face...you know the pouty, puppy face...the same one you do," Emyr complained, "I'm powerless against it."
"Mum says it's genetic, but I guess he's spent so much time around her that..." he trailed off and shrugged. Sometimes, he wondered about Iefan's origins. His mum told him that Jack adopted him, but there were times that he reminded David of his uncle so much. He wanted to change the subject.
"Does this mean I'll have to be the disciplinarian with our kids?" he asked and watched a little smile appear on Emyr's face at the thought of their children. It was still a little stressful to think about. However, the idea was getting a little less bizarre as long as it was years away.
"Probably," Emyr admitted and David shook his head despite the grin on his face.
***********************************************************
Iefan had his car seat undone before Jack could reach him. Luckily, the door had locks to keep him in. He opened the door and his son flew out. Jack caught him around the chest and picked him up as he shut the door. Then, he locked it as they walked to the building.
"What that, taddy?" he asked at the strange place.
"That's a Christmas present for both of us," he told him and kissed him on the cheek. They entered and there was a receptionist.
"I'm John Harper. I already arranged an appointment about adopting a puppy," he said and she nodded.
"Yes, I was told about you. Your papers are all in order. Just go through that door," she stated and pointed to another door. They opened it and saw a row of large cages, but no one around.
"Ah, hi...you're here to adopt?" a man guessed, coming from around a corner.
"Yep, a puppy probably," Jack said and Iefan pointed to a very old dog, "Puppy!"
"Not that one," Jack spoke and shook his head.
"Well, there are advantages with an older dog, but perhaps with a young child, it might not be the best choice," the employee explained, "What were you looking for?"
"Something young and healthy and won't die for a really long time," Jack told him because he wasn't ready to commit to someone and have them die on him. It still felt too soon.
"Well, let's see what we can do. We did get in a mum and her puppies just before Christmas. They're just about a month old, but that's old enough for adoption," the employee spoke and started walking in the other direction, "Follow me."

Date: 2010-06-27 09:45 pm (UTC)The Bullmasador was the only dog that met all the criteria. "The Labrador Retriever is an exceptional family companion. They are sweet, affectionate, and patient, and they constantly aim to please. They are highly intelligent, good-natured, and they love to play. Their temperament is reliable and friendly, and they get along very well with children and other dogs. " However, "if left unattended for extended periods of time, the Labrador Retriever can become mischievous." This wouldn't do but since it's combined with the Bullmastiff, this usually isn't seen. "The Bullmastiff is a loyal, devoted breed of guard dog that is always alert and protective. Although he is fearless and brave, the Bullmastiff is docile unless provoked. This breed will not attack just anyone, but they will catch intruders and knock them onto the ground. They do not bite and they are not aggressive unless directly threatened. Bullmastiffs have a good-natured, loving temperament, and they are tolerant of children. They are even-tempered, intelligent, and they crave human affection. "
My brother has a large dog...an Australian cattle dog mix that comes up to my knees or higher on all fours and on my chest if she's standing. She's very capable of knocking me down. However, she's been around my nephew's two youngest cousins since they were born with no problems. I ruled her breed out thoughtbecause she does nuts if left alone for any period of time. The first time my brother and his family left her for a whole weekend, she ate all my SiL's shoes when they returned and that was with ME staying with her.

Date: 2010-06-18 01:55 am (UTC)It's 8 or 9 years after CoE, but Iefan is a toddler? Did Jack wait a while before artificially inseminating himself?
Oh... just looked up and saw there's a prequel. *blush* Heading that way now...

Date: 2010-06-27 09:53 pm (UTC)Aww, I'm glad that you discovered both stories. There have been a few wonderful artificial insemination stories, but this isn't one of them.
As I mentioned to a few before, when I first learned Ianto did really die in CoE, almost the first words out of my mouth were, Jack better be pregnant!
Thus, this series was born and I'm a little more relaxed.
