What NOT to Do When House-sitting

At the end of the row were a large black dog and two puppies: one was light brown and the other was black.

"The mum looks like she's Labrador, but the puppies look like they have a lot of Bull Mastiff in them. Don't let that put you off. You'd never find a more loyal dog and gentle, but it will need a firm hand in obedience. Would you like a private room with them?" the man asked and Jack looked at Iefan. His son was giggling which was all he needed to know. If they could subdue dinosaurs and weevils, a dog should be no problem. They were led into a private room where the mum and her puppies were able to wander about. Iefan ran around to try and catch the brown one.

"Be gentle, Iefan, just stop for a minute," Jack told him. After he insisted, Iefan stopped and the black one approached him.

"That one's a girl," the employee stated and Jack studied her. She was black except for her belly that was white and the insides of her ears were pink. However, he kept staring at her eyes. They were even bluer than Iefan's. The toddler had fallen down from her persistant licking of his trouser leg. She must have found where he smeared peanut butter on them.

"We'll take that one," he told the other man, "Does she have a name?"

"Since they came to us in December, we gave them all winter names," the employee explained, "Her name is Gwyn."

"Well, we can always come up with a different name then," Jack spoke and went over to the puppy. He petted her and she barked in an excited tone, wagging her tail.

Rhi wasn't used to puppies. Jack's new puppy was jumping over everything and barking every second.

"What's her name?" Mica asked and picked it up.

"Gwyn, it's going to be changed," Jack informed them.

"Lula!" Iefan shouted and they all looked at him.

"Really? Lula?" Jack asked his son and Iefan nodded.

"Lula," he insisted and Jack shrugged. It could have been worse.

"Is she house broken?" Rhi asked with a wary eye.

"Sort of," he answered and she sighed.

"Out! Out! I don't want her in the house until you're sure she is," Rhi declared and pointed towards the door.

"Well, here's the thing and you know I wouldn't do this if I had no choice, but something's come up..."

"No..."

"There are some problems in Ireland and we have to go right away, but it shouldn't take longer than the weekend," Jack spoke and tried that grin of his. It wasn't working today. She was tired and it was just six days until her biopsy thing. She could explain that, but she didn't want to. He seemed so happy about her being pregnant that she would just let him think that a little longer until she had explanations.

"I just can't," she said and shook her head, "not both of them."

"I guess I could put her in a kennel or something, but I just got her yesterday. I don't want to confuse her, Emyr's apprently allergic and Rhys hasn't watched Iefan, much less a dog," Jack spoke and looked at the puppy in Mica's arms. She was standing just inside the back door.

"What about me? It'd be perfect. I could just stay at his place and look after both of them there," Mica suggested and Rhi shook her head.

"You staying alone all weekend? You don't even have a license. What if something came up?" she asked and crossed her arms.

"David doesn't live that far away. He could come quickly in an emergency, but I'm trust-worthy, aren't I? I could do it, right?" she asked and looked from Rhi to Jack and back to Rhi. Her mum sighed and glared at Jack, "Are you willing to let a fourteen year old stay in your house all weekend alone while taking care of Iefan and...and Lula?"

"Taddy," Iefan complained while holding the item up, "Nappy bad."
Jack studied his bottom.

"That's because you took the tabs off. You have to be a good boy and not do that," Jack told him, "That's a brand new nappy."

Hmm, one weekend of this might be just what Mica needed. Maybe she'd still be a virgin at university.

"It seems like she has it all worked out if you're willing," Jack spoke and Rhi shrugged although her stomach wasn't well.

"Yes!" Mica yelled and pumped her fist. She gave the puppy back to Jack and ran back upstairs.

"Leave me the carseat and I'll drop all three of them off," Rhi spoke and rubbed her abdomen.

**************************************************

Mica didn't understand why they were so worried. This house-sitting, baby-sitting, dog-sitting...whatever was easy! She chased Iefan around the backyard until he was yawning so bedtime took hardly any time at all. Then, Lula put up a fuss at the cage she was supposed to put her in for the night so Mica kept the puppy with her. Since she had bought her make-up bag, she tried to do a cleansing mask. However, the puppy licked it off so she settled for going to sleep. Jack's bed was so comfortable. She wasn't naive. She knew the mattress and coverings were perfect for a reason. Still, it was nice just for sleeping until she felt something wet. Was it a water bed? She didn't think it was but...

"Woof," Lula barked and whined.

"Shit!" Mica shrieked in the semi-darkness and jumped off the bed. Lula looked at the bed and floor before barking. The distance didn't seem that big, but Mica picked her up and set her down. Then, she took everything off the bed to put into the wash.

"Yeah, that...not so much fun," Mica complained and yawned. Lula was investigating the garden. She wanted to go back to bed. Then, she heard a noise, like a pop. Her first thought was that someone had broken in until she remembered Iefan had a new bed: a new bed that was easy to escape from.

"Shit," she commented and realised there were other sounds. They were all coming from the bathroom. What if he had found dangerous chemicals? What if he was drinking them? She ran to the room and turned on the light. Iefan was on the counter with her make-up bag open. The brand new can of spray tan she had bought had fallen to the floor and gone off. The contents were still making an orange mess on the tile. Iefan smacked his lips like she or her mum would have done although the lipstick was across the entire lower half of his face. He had also drawn on himself with her eyeliner pencils.

"Oh, Iefan," she said and shook her head.

"Fun!" Iefan declared and started drawing on the mirror with her most expensive lipstick. He was coughing.

"No!" she spat and took it from his hands. The smell was starting to get to her, too. She took him in her arms and into the fresh air with Lula. Iefan stopped coughing. When almost an hour passed, the trio went back inside where the smell had enveloped the whole house but not as thick. She left the back door open. Then, Iefan tugged on her shirt and led her to the coffee table where he pulled at one of the books.

"Aww, it's your baby book," she said and settled on the couch, settling him onto her lap so they could both look at it. All sorts of pictures were inside, including photos of Mica holding him. She recognized everyone except two men: one in a brown suit and the other with a naff bowtie. Her watch beeped the hour and she looked at it a moment. It was after glancing away that she noticed the tab sticking out a bit on the last page. To the casual eye, it seemed like part of the decoration, but her gut was telling her that it wasn't. She pulled on it and an extra page came out.

"Oh, shit!" she exclaimed with her mouth gaped open.

"Shit," Iefan repeated and pointed to one of the photos, "Taddy."

It was Jack. There was no doubt about that. The thing that gave her pause and made her brain hurt was that the pictures appeared to be Jack in various stages of pregnancy. This could mean only one thing.

"Oh my God," she mumbled and shook her head. Jack really had given birth to Iefan. He hadn't been adopted at all.

Same Book or Same Page?

When I read the chapter "Same book or Same Page" I realized I had somehow missed a chapter where they actually got the puppy. So, I back tracked to this chapter. Mica has her hands full, then to find out about Jack. Very good!

Yeah, past me, the truth will out! The secrets have to be uncovered! That's the fun part.

The uncertain part is how everyone will react.
