Prologue: Warning

Zoe sat with the infant in her lap; discreetly feeding at her breast. Sulis hadn’t even given him the girl’s name who sat to the side before standing up, stretching and sitting again. Her body was incapable of stillness until she looked right at him; the only member of the crew to have noticed him eavesdropping. Brown eyes peered intently at his between strands of unkempt hair and she pulled her knees to her chest. She appeared quite young and helpless in a deceiving way. Karori had no qualms in trying to read her mind before she pushed back.

“My mind is not my own; it has been taken by the face,” she wailed and all eyes turned to her.

“River, please,” pleaded Simon, taking her hand, “We’ll keep you safe.”

Please, please relax, I don’t want to hurt you, Karori told her through her mind, but it wasn’t like when he was connected to Trea. This girl was different.

“Mind is gone, but the face lives forever,” she spoke in an odd child-like voice, “talking to me inside.”

Although he looked away, the damage was done and Simon spotted him.

“You, you’re from the Alliance, aren’t you?” he accused, grabbing his braces. Karori let go of her mind at that very instant.

“Talking stops but something must replace the talking,” River babbled, “This must be distinctly understood, or nothing wonderful can come of the story...the rainbow comes after the rain.”

“I don’t even know what the Alliance is,” Karori said, truthfully, and the captain held an odd look on his face.

“But you’re like her, you were in her mind just now,” he stated, drawing closer.

“Mal, what are you talking about?” asked Zoe, shifting her child.

“He’s right, isn’t he?” Simon questioned, the braces stretching beyond what they were meant to so they cut into his shoulder, “That’s what my sister meant about her mind…she’s not crazy. She’s just different. It’s what they did to her, but then, you would know all about that.”

“I don’t,” he insisted as all his plans fell apart. How much hadn’t he been told? What exactly was Sulis hiding?

“He tells the truth,” River spoke, standing up, “time has made him her bitch.” Karori kind of resented that implication; he was in control thanks to the vortex manipulator and she couldn’t have been referring to the agency.

“Well, I still don’t trust him,” said Jayne, holding a rather large knife. He’d have to come up with a new plan, but he needed more time for that. The time agent reached in his back pocket…he really needed a new coat since his last one got destroyed a couple of months ago.

“Hold it right there,” Mal threatened; a gun having appeared in his hand in record time. With a smirk, Karori retorted, “If I had wanted to kill you, you’d be dead already.”
Instead, he produced two rings which the rest of the room stared at and it was obvious that they had never seen them before.

“What are those?” asked a voice he hadn’t caught yet. She was a redhead wearing mechanic’s overalls.

“I wear one and one of you wears the other. If I move too far away, then…zzzz,” he spoke, mimicking the sound of being electrocuted.

“I like the sound of that,” said Jayne, stepping forward.

“No, you’d the test the limits on purpose,” Mal argued.

“Just you and me then?” Karori asked of the captain with a wink.

“No, not that either. You’re like my bisexual twin or something,” the other complained and the time agent noticed for the first time that they were both wearing brown trousers and shirts in varying degrees of blue with braces although his were grey and Mal’s were brown.

“Just take me to the next port and you’ll never see me again,” Karori offered and Mal considered this.

“Kaylee, you’re going to wear the other ring,” the captain decided.

“What? I must protest,” Simon complained.

“I know Kaylee wouldn’t try anything,” Mal explained, “and if he needs any more medical attention, she’s never far from our Doc.”

The redhead’s face began to match her hair and he knew that must be Kaylee.

“Fine,” she agreed, unhappy but sticking her wrist out, “You can come with me and make yourself useful.”

Karori snapped on the circles and followed her into the bowels of the ship. Despite the noise of machinery, the silence was deafening to him. He still hadn’t come up with an actual plan and they held every advantage over him. Kaylee stopped in front of a panel and opened it up to reveal a labyrinth of wires that had been hobbled together by whatever means they had. Some of it even looked like spit. She handed him some of her tools and reached into the mess. After watching a bit, he suggested, “You should switch the wires for better output.”

Kaylee gave him a dirty look, but he noticed that she did as he suggested.

“So, you and the doctor…” Karori said with a smirk. Red came into her cheeks again before she admitted, “Yeah, some time now.”

If Simon was River’s brother, maybe he could use Kaylee for more information.

“What’s he like?”

It didn’t take as long to answer as he thought it might.

“Quiet and sensitive and sweet and…perfect,” she uttered and he heard the bliss in her voice. Karori liked his life of fucking whatever he pleased and living for no one but himself and Trea. He was happy except…except when someone made it clear what he was missing. It’d been too quiet which he hated so he fixed it the best way he knew how.

“I LOVE quiet and sensitive,” he said, adding, “The ones who are the most quiet are the ones who come up with the craziest stuff in bed, like…”

The entire ship rocked.

“What the fuck was that?”

Kaylee cursed in Chinese and the ship rocked again so that he fell on top of her. They didn’t have time to take advantage of that though and stood up as quick as they could. She led the way to the bridge where the rest of the crew was gathered within a minute or two of their arrival. Karori saw with interest that River was serving as pilot.

“What was that?” asked the mechanic when Zoe starting shaking.

“Reavers,” Mal spat, sending a chill into everyone in the room. The time agent thought he’d outrun them long ago.

“You have Reavers?” he questioned in the vain hope that it was something else. Jayne said something in Chinese, but Karori could figure it out so his second question was, “What kind of weapons are you carrying?”

“We’re a cargo vessel, Firefly class,” Simon spoke as though speaking to an idiot.

“Actually…” Jayne started before Mal interrupted, “We may have added a few things since last time.”

There was no need to ask about last time from the way Zoe’s eyes watered when looking at the bridge to how tightly she clutched the infant. Still, you couldn’t allow any time for grief where Reavers were concerned.

“They’ve never traveled this far in before,” Simon stated and Karori answered for him, “They changed tactics. What can we do?”

“Jayne, load the EMP,” Mal ordered and the large man nodded.

“Might be too close for that,” Kaylee warned while they waited with a nervous stomach.

“Reavers,” the time agent hissed and shook his head, “worst race of creature ever created by the universe.”

“The Universe isn’t responsible for them,” said the female that he’d seen earlier, still in her finery, “Men are, I hope they’re reborn as cockroaches.”

The Reavers were created? He didn’t understand this.

“Someone made the Reavers?” Karori questioned, trying to be composed but fearing that he’d become that boy he was then.

Brown eyes glared at him and the lady responded, “Either you play dumb the best I’ve ever seen or maybe you aren’t with the Alliance. They conditioned the atmosphere on some of the outer planets to be more like Earth, but something went wrong on one and created these…things instead.”

If it weren’t for the subject matter, he would have been able to listen to how her voice drifted through the air like silk and her skin was flawless. However, the Reavers had once taken everything from him and he’d never forget that, if the Alliance had been the ones to create them…

“Then, the Alliance is my enemy, too.”

After giving him a good look, she moved off towards Mal and Kaylee whispered, “Don’t even try it, stranger. Inara’s with the Captain and a Companion anyway.”

It was the second strange thing he’d heard in the span of less than five minutes.
