Iefan's Secret

Jack followed Johnny and the teenagers who trailed the nurse until they reached a door. She opened it and they saw Rhi on a bed. There was a trace of a smile at seeing them come in.

"Hello you, how you feeling?" Johnny asked in a soft voice and took her hand.

"Tired, head hurts a right lot, but better," she said in a hoarse tone.

"I'm glad," Johnny spoke before Johnny and Mica came closer. Then, after a minute or two, she inclined her to see Jack.

"I half expected you to bring him with you," she said, "glad you didn't though."

Jack took a few steps so he was next to them.

"He's not feeling well," he explained and her face was concerned, "He'll be fine."

Rhi readjusted her position and tried to plump the pillow.

"I'm going to rest, you should go back and take care of Iefan," she said, "thanks." Jack nodded, said his goodbyes and headed outside. Then, in the lobby, he heard a familiar voice, "Dad!"

He turned to see Alice holding Iefan. What were they doing here? From her face, it didn't look like a surprise visit.

"I tried to phone you and was about to page you. His fever won't go down and I can't get him to drink anything," she explained and he took the toddler from her arms. She was right and Iefan wasn't even making noise. He hurried to the older lady at the desk and demanded, "My son needs a doctor right now."

"Sir..." she started before seeing Iefan, "how old is he?"

"Nineteenth months," he said and she paged a doctor. They tried to speed through the forms as Jack and Alice followed Iefan on a gurney and to the children's ward.

"I think it's a particularly nasty cold. We'll put him on antibiotics and we'll have to put him on IV fluids if he's not drinking...not even milky-pops or an ice lolly?" the doctor asked and Alice shook her head, "Then, he'll need an IV and I want to scan his chest, make sure his lungs are fine. Actually, I'm going to have that done now."

"Can I come with him?" Jack asked, prepared to pull the Torchwood card if he got a negative answer.

"Of course," the middle-aged male replied and Alice said she would wait outside. After they put him on the bed of the machine, Jack took his hand.

"Your tad's right here, you'll be fine, don't worry," he said in a soft voice although he almost wanted Iefan to have a fit rather than just lying there. However, the machine was loud and he started to whimper as it scanned.

"It'll be over soon," he said as there was a beep. The doctor went into the other room for a moment. When he came back, he said, "There were some irregularities with the scan. We're going to do a more thorough one."

Jack was beginning to have a bad feeling. He hoped he knew what those irregularities were.

****************************************************

Alice waited outside, rubbing her belly as nurses walked past, gossiping. She was sure he was going to be fine, but if anything happened to her little brother while he was in her care, she'd never...well, he'd join Steven on the list. She sighed and was glad when the door opened. Iefan had a tube attached to him and her dad seemed shaken. They were taken to a private room with cheery wallpaper of Little Red Riding Hood and a large television.

"The nurse should be back in a bit, see how things are," the doctor said with a smile and left the room. She noticed his name tag read, Dr. Sloper. The three of them were alone.

"They're going to make up some excuse to get me out of the room. Then, they will try to talk you into surgery for him..."

"What?"

"Promise me that you won't let them cut Iefan open," Jack spoke with an expression so serious that he couldn't be taking the piss.

"Yeah, of course...I promise," she said although she wished she knew what was going on.

"Taddy," Iefan whispered and Jack rushed to him, kneeling beside him.

"I'm right here, Iefan," he said and moved some of the sweaty curls from his forehead. Then, her stomach gurgled. It had been awhile since she'd eaten or slept.

"I should get you breakfast..."

"That's not necessary," she tried to argue since she knew he'd rather be with Iefan.

"This way, when I leave, they can talk to you rather than making up some excuse for me to leave," Jack spoke and kissed Iefan on his cheek, "I'll be back, don't worry."
He left and she placed a chair next to the toddler. Her brother did look better. No sooner did her dad leave, then the doctor from earlier entered with a laptop.

"I wanted to show you something about Iefan," he said and opened it up, "These are his scans."

She saw that it was internal organs although they were a little off.

"All his internal organs are a bit out of their usual places because of this thing," he explained and pulled up another view, "He has a growth attached to his rectum. There almost looks like a little flap which is worrying. If it became loose or came open, then that could lead to fecal contaminations, infection...it wouldn't be good."

"Do you think that's what happened?" she asked and tried to reconcile the scans with the toddler beside her.

"No, seems to be a cold, but it's better to be safe than sorry. I'd just need you to sign some forms," Sloper said, "It's a simple surgery."

It didn't look like a simple surgery. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about otherwise, but she had promised her father. Alice shook her head.

"No, my dad doesn't want him to have the surgery and he's Iefan's parent. I'm going to respect that and so should you," she said and rubbed her belly because her daughter was being very active.

"Your father is a moron and no GP in their right mind would think this was fine," he hissed so that Alice leaned closer to Iefan. After another glare, he left the room and Alice relaxed. However, she couldn't sleep, not until Jack came back. In a little while, he returned with a box of pastries.

"Very nutritious," she joked although her stomach growled again.

"Did he...?"

"Yeah," Alice told him and crossed her arms, "I didn't let him, but it sounded pretty serious so I want you tell me what's going on."

Jack sat the box on another chair and sat on the edge of the bed. Iefan was asleep.

"That doctor just wants to cut out what he doesn't understand because they won't be seeing anything like it for another five hundred years at least. It won't hurt Iefan, trust me," he whispered and those were still two words she wasn't sure about, "Thanks to you, when Iefan grows up, he can have a baby the way I had him."

Alice realised her mouth was open. Her dad had told her that he had given birth to Iefan, but she had tried to not give it much thought. Now, it turned out her dad was more alien than she thought and it was genetic. It could have happened to Steven, at least with Lucy and the new baby, they were girls.

"So, when you have to give him the sex talk, you'll have to warn about not only knocking someone else up but getting knocked up himself," Alice tried to joke because it felt so ridiculous, "Can't have a fifteen old pregnant especially if it's a boy."

Jack had an odd expression on his face like she had gone too far.

"It would be rough. You took off to have him," she reminded him.

"He could just like girls, might not even come up," he said and they both looked at the toddler's blue toenails. Still, it was too young to tell. She was straight so maybe it never would be a problem. Alice tried not to think about her dad having the same strange organ inside him.

"Was there something else?" Jack asked and she hesitated a second.

"You don't really get old, not like the rest of us. We have to face that moment where we won't have another pregnancy or maybe we never will have a baby at all," she spoke, "but you...you could keep going. It could be a thousand years from now, Iefan and I long dead and you wouldn't need a woman for a child, just the right man."

Jack reached in for a piece encrusted with powder sugar.

"Are you going to have another one?" she asked as he chewed and she took one for herself, "Some day?"

"Some day, maybe," Jack agreed, "He wasn't planned. It just happened. I think the bloke would have to be really special to do that again."

"That's true," she agreed and patted her belly with one hand, "Any more kids then?"
Alice looked at him and he understood what she meant.

"Not sure, you think that would be wise? To put some other woman in the same position as your mum?" he asked and she couldn't remember seeing him so thoughtful before, "or to be put in your place?"

He did have that right. It wasn't easy having Jack Harkness as a father. If she had been anyone else' daughter, none of that would have ever happened and she'd still be a single mum with a teenage boy. She'd also have never met Thomas...

"Could have been worse," she said, taking another bite. Jack put a hand on the toddler's forehead and his blue eyes looked ancient.

"Sometimes, I wonder about if Steven had siblings, whether it would have hurt as much," Alice admitted on this rare occasion of utter honesty.

"Yes, just the same," Jack spoke as though it was fact. He had experienced it before. Her dad was at least a century old. How many kids had he outlived? Alice took a hand and put it on his knee. A small smile appeared on his face.

Another excellent chapter. I like your explanation of the "how" of a male pregnacy can happen. I wonder, though, why Jack would leave it in Alice's hands to tell the doctors no way on a surgery on Iefan. I love the interaction and conversations between Jack and Alice. Jack probably does have/had other children, maybe some he dosen't even know about. But, Iefan will always be special to him, even a 1000 years from now. Good job with this story. It still is keeping my interest and I always enjoy seeing the latest chapter posted.

Aww, thank you.

I've had several people tell me that they don't like MPreg because it could never happen and they tend to be science people so it's like: Fine, I'll figure out a way grounded in science for it to happen and be something that can be passed on genetically rather than an operation or implant. Since the Doctor makes such a big deal of species "mingling", I see no reason to believe Jack's fully human.

I tried to have that doctor alludes to a previous conversation with Jack. Jack would have already tried to see his side without explaining what the organ really is so he knew they'd come after Alice to consent in his absence, but if she was part of an united front, then they'd have to give up. I'm glad things are getting so much better between them.

Yes, Iefan will definitely always be special to him and the latest chapter is posted.

It's nice to see Jack and Alice bonding a bit and Alice coming to understand her father a bit better as well.

Another fantastic chapter, i love each and every one, despite Ianto being barely in the story he's somehow always there in spirit.

Yes, if we can't physically have Ianto in season four, I want him to be unseen presence like this.

Thank You

Also, I'm writing another story,
When All the Stars Were Falling
(http://ericadawn16.livejournal.com/140297.html) which has a LOT more Ianto. I started writing it right before season 2 ended so aside from the prologue, Ianto is physically in almost every chapter. This is the one where I get to have actual Janto and fluffiness between them.

How in the world was that the only thing I wrote back then? Gazooks,Meow, there's so much stuff here!

Iefan could have a baby someday,Jack and Alice interaction with Jack being all thinky thoughty concerned...so much awesome.

"Yes, just the same,"

I'm a little miffed about how they haven't mentioned the Time Agency in a while. And YES, Ianto, Tosh, and Owen's presence should be alluded to in Season 4! The narrative weight of Ianto is an opportunity that shouldn't be wasted. If we can't have him back, then he should kinda be what Trudy was to Monk...on that show Monk.

Yep, I don't think I want it quite the same since Trudy's death and his OCDness made Monk unable to have another relationship and I want Jack to have other relationships since he's going to live forever but yeah, I do want it acknowledged that he's still hurting on the inside from Ianto and Steven and judging from the ads, I think this is happening even if the script doesn't say a word.

Have you seen stuff from the new show? In almost all the scenes, Jack's eyes are dead, like he says his usual stuff, he goes through the motions, but the spark isn't there, something's missing...

I'm really hoping Owen and Tosh get mentioned but considering how little they were in season 3...I don't know...

I definitely meant the inspiring him to live his life aspects of Trudy---not the OCDness, :D

Not yet. Hopefully that means they're acknowledging Ianto. I should look that up.

And I think Tosh and Owen's absence was due in part to the shorter nature of Season 3, but I was surprised at how little time was given to their loss.
