Time Out

Jack never slept long. After a few hours, he would be up and reading a book or watching Iefan except Iefan nearly woke up just an hour or so before so Jack sat in bed with with one of Rowling's books. Then, he heard the back door open and Lula bark. It had just turned six in the morning. Jack shot up and stuck a small revolver in his pocket before stepping foot on the landing. Alice's door was still shut. However, Iefan's room was wide open and his bed was empty. He ran down the stairs: a million possibilities went through his mind. Lula barked in front of him and he followed her to the kitchen where the door hadn't been shut. A chair had been pushed next to it. A new idea formed in his head and it was confirmed in a few seconds. Iefan was playing on the new equipment. Jack sighed in relief and walked over him.

"Taddy," he said and waved before going down the slide. Jack took him in his arms.

"Don't ever do this again. You have to tell an adult that you want to come out here, yeah?" Jack asked and looked at him until his son nodded, "Okay. Let's go back inside and I'll make us some brekkie."

Jack made them some eggs, toast and cereal after depositing the weapon back in his room. They were both almost finished when he heard footsteps on the stairs and Lula barking again. Alice had her green dressing gown wrapped around her as he met her at the foot of the stairs.

"Did you want any eggs or anything?" he asked and motioned towards the kitchen.

"I'm not an invalid. I can make my own breakfast," she said and he hadn't meant it that way.

"I know..."

"Sorry, I have an appointment later," she apologised, "I would like that."

Jack wondered what he should say.

"Do you want me? There? At the appointment?" he asked. Alice rubbed her face and her belly.

"No, someone would have to watch Iefan. I'll be fine, just routine," she spoke and they heard the back door open again.

"Iefan!" Jack hissed and ran with Lula at his heels. Iefan was making his way across wooden the suspension bridge, heading for the green plastic slide.

"Iefan! I want you to come here right now!" Jack commanded and his son ignored him. Lula tried to go up the slide but she kept sliding down.

"What happened?" Alice asked, appearing by his side.

"I told Iefan he had to tell an adult before going outside and he didn't," he informed her and noticed how she smirked, "He's never really done this before."

"Yeah, but he'll be two before you know it and he is your son," Alice spoke, "This is only the beginning."

In the books, they recommended a time-out for bad behaviour. He supposed he had to try that.

"Iefan! Get over here now!" Jack yelled even though it was hard. The little boy played with one of the swings instead. Alice gave him an encouraging smile. He could do this. Jack went over and picked up Iefan without another word. They went inside where he plopped the toddler on a plush chair. Jack sat on the couch and announced, "You have ninety seconds in time out." He set it on his wrist strap as Iefan climbed down.

"No, you have to stay," Jack spoke and put him back. Iefan whined and kicked his feet. Then, his wrist strap beeped.

"All done," Jack said as the toddler bolted for Alice in another chair, "I suppose I could move the lock up higher."

"Yeah, that'll work for a few months," she joked and Iefan snuggled against her. He was taller than most of the children his age according to Selene. Still, he'd have to try something. Then, Iefan stuck a finger in nose and picked at it.

Alice returned home that night and sat on the couch: exhausted. She texted the latest about the baby to Thomas and rested her eyes. Then, something else was on the couch with her. Lula panted and licked her hand. The back door opened and closed with her dad and Iefan coming in. The toddler pushed Lula over so he could sit with her, handing her a plastic spider as he held Faba.

"How'd it go?" Jack asked and settled on a chair.

"About what I thought," she admitted and took a breath before continuing, "She's a large baby. They all think a caesarean would be best."

Her dad's face was so concerned; she couldn't help telling the rest of it.

"That is, if she lasts that long, there's still a good chance I'll have her early."

Jack stood up and moved Lula so he could sit beside her and Iefan.

"It'll work out," he spoke in tone that didn't completely pacify her fears but at least he tried. Iefan rested his head on her nump and she wondered what he thought of it all.

"Iefan," she said and he looked up at her, "I'm having a baby. You're going to be an uncle." She rubbed her belly to emphasize the point and after a second, Iefan returned to resting his head on the bump. She smiled except that it made her think of Lucia.

"I wish I could have Lucia like this. I miss being able to hug her and brush her hair," she complained.

"I know," her dad whispered and put his arm around her. Lula settled on Jack's lap.

**********************************************************

Mica drank her warm milk as her mum sat on the couch with some comedy show on the telly.

"You could get a wig. It doesn't have to be dark. You could get a blue one or something," she suggested because she found that idea preferable to the baldness.

"I'm fine," Rhi insisted and fanned herself with a magazine. Mica wished there was something she could do. She felt useless.

Alice couldn't sleep. Her daughter was too squirmy so she tried walking around the house to settle her down. Her dad was still up, reading on the couch so she avoided the stairs. On one hand she liked how involved her dad was trying to be, but then, you can't make up forty years in a matter of months or being away from her family. However, it was nice earlier that day when he had tried to comfort her about the baby.

"Alice, why don't you come down here and I'll show you something," Jack's voice called and she should have known he'd notice anyway. She made her way down to the couch and he picked up Iefan's baby book. Alice had looked through it once; recognizing some and not others especially the young man with the bow tie. He definitely wasn't Ianto. Her dad flipped to the last page and pulled on something to reveal a hidden page. It was handed to her and she gasped. It was the photos of her dad when he was pregnant.

"Oh, dad," she said at seeing him with various sizes of belly. It was weird but a little amusing to think of her dad going through everything she was going through at the moment.

"So, the cravings, heartburn, sleeplessness, all of that?" she asked with a smile.

"I had all of it and worse," Jack confirmed.

"What could be worse?" she asked while studying one photo where his hand was caressing his belly. Jack glanced up stairs before answering and seemed to hesitate.

"Tell me," she spoke, looking into his blue eyes.

"He killed me when I had him. Male pregnancies have a lot more risks and I died for a bit," he uttered and crossed his arms. If she had known that before, she never would have asked if he ever planned to have more in the future. She also knew why he had hesitated because she would have similar surgery. It didn't mean that would happen to her though.

"He also had colic when he was a baby, screamed all night. The only thing that would calm him was the Doctor singing to him," Jack spoke.

"Your own private doctor; must be nice," she commented and handed him back the page. Maybe it was a provided precaution of his having died during childbirth. Her dad put the page back and flipped to an early picture of Iefan where he was being held by a man in a brown suit.

"This is the Doctor. It's what everyone calls him except for River. She insists on calling him, Sweetie," Jack said and shook his head.

"You never mentioned him before," Alice commented.

"I never thought you were interested before," her dad told her which had been the truth, but she was part of his life now and there was no going back.

I especially like this chapter. It's very poignant. Reminded me how much Alice didn't know about her father. It's a really special moment in them building a real relationship together. I quite like it.

Yay! I'm glad to hear that. Yes, with those parents, there's no way Iefan won't be causing trouble for Jack.

Don't you. Just love mobile toddlers? My nephew at that age would always try to run up to me and grab my glasses off my face then scurry off. Jack's gonna have his hands full and then some, I bet.
It's nice to see him and Alice grow closer. Now if only Thomas would grow up and talk to her.

Can I be miffed at Thomas now? Or should Jack call him again?

The last lines had this swimming into my head:

A strange wheezing sound and a gust of a wind whirled in the air. Alice's eyes widened and a big, blue, old Police Box appeared. Jack smirked and Iefan screamed in delight.

One of the doors creaked open and the bow-tied man from the photo album stepped out, "NEVER? Never mentioned me at all? Oh, that's a bit rude."

Alice found her voice, "You're him. The man from the pictures."

The Doctor chuckled and shook her hand, "And you're Alice. The daughter from the stories."

The bow-tied man spotted Iefan and knelt down to give him a hug."Oh, it's you! You're much taller now. Good job. Hello, I'm the--"

"DOCTA!"

"Mind-reading? That's not fair."

"What's not fair is not warning me Jack would be gorgeous!" A red-headed woman leaned in the doorway of the box, head tilted to look at Alice's father. An irritated Roman Centurion appeared behind her, "Oy, blue eyes, she's married!"

"Oh, stop it. I know that."said the red head shaking her head as she strode out of the box.

The Roman didn't look convinced and shot Jack a look, "And I have a sword!" The Doctor popped in between them.

"Be nice, Rory." The Doctor turned to Jack. "Jack, this is Rory the Roman, that is Amelia Pond--" The Doctor zoomed back into the TARDIS and wheeled out an 1800s perambulator.
"And you'll never guess who this is!"

Alice groaned, "Not another sibling."

"What?" said Jack growing pale.

"No, no, she's mine!"said Amy protectively."Definitely mine."

"Ours," said Rory.

"What he said."

"Oh,it's too good!" said the Doctor. "But you have to guess, Jack."

A cry from the perambulator drew everyone's attention back to it. Rory made a move towards it. Amy stopped him, "Whoa, metal armor and a baby? I don't think so." She cradled the baby in her arms. "Hey there, beautiful."

"But she likes it when I wear it."He waved at the baby and she giggled."See?"

Jack shrugged,"How am I suppose to know who she is?Besides being their baby..."

Iefan tugged on Rory's cape,""Rome?" Rory looked down. "Oh, hi, Iefan."

"Taddy?Wat's 'Hello Sweeney'?"

Jack folded his arms, "You've got to be kidding me."

The Doctor picked up Iefan, "That's cheating!"

Thomas needs some time to process everything...since Jack actually told him just about everything...

love, love, LOVE the fanfic bit, it makes me very tempted but I'm not sure if timelines are going to allow it...however, I am definitely having River very soon.

thank you
