Star Wars and Torchwood
Nov. 18th, 2010 09:35 pmOnce upon a time, there was a trio of films that was re-released on the big screen. It was amazing...like watching the films for the very first time. I was also able to use my new English skills of foreshadowing, metaphor and use of color for the very first time in a non-academic setting.
I was obsessed. I bought new toys, read everything I could and came up with my own adventures for the characters.
My obsession was further fueled by news of a new series to come: three new films starring none other than Liam Neeson who I had liked in Schindler's List and Ewan McGregor who I had already developed a crush on. I felt like nothing could go wrong and I did love the new films...at first...
As time passed, I realized how different they were, how they weren't as fun as those first episodes I fell in love with. These new episodes were more concerned with government concerns and deaths that didn't entirely make sense.
I didn't hate them but they were a pale comparison to the original series of episodes. Other obsessions took my time and I thought of the newer episodes less and less.
Then, they came out with a new series. I didn't have high hopes. I still remembered what had happened before. However, I went to the new film and the episodes afterward.
It was different. It was more like the episodes I first fell in love with. Characters were well-written and fun. Plots ranged from the government regulations to bounty hunters to intrigue involving an ex-boyfriend. The series was enjoyable again. I may not have watched the last episode of the last series in years but I look forward to each of these new episode with excitement.
Because of this experience with Star Wars, I'll be watching Torchwood: The New World. I still have my problems with Davies but...I really miss Jack and Gwen and Rhys and...
I know it's going to be weird. I'll keep expecting Ianto to show up the same way I expected Tosh and Owen in CoE, but if I don't watch, I'll always wonder whether it was any good. Plus, they have Jane Espenson and Doris Egan...
I still want Jack to meet Eleven though especially if Steven Moffat is still in touch and saying he'd love to have Jack in Dr. Who.
This is not me resigning any of the Ianto groups either. They've raised a lot of money for charity and reinforced the idea that we want more for him than they did with Tosh and Owen, more than two mentions over five episodes. Ianto, Steven, Tosh and Owen all deserve better than that.
Sometimes, fandom can be best compared to an abusive relationship where you keep going back because they promise it'll be better this time.
*fingers crossed that it'll be better than it appears at the moment*

Saying, "I created these characters, so I can do what I wish with them" is one thing, but blatantly disrespecting fans who are unhappy with your decisions the way he did is something you just don't do. To put it a different way, he should have responded to people's complaints more graciously.
As for the show itself, for me, it was all about the characters and how they interacted with one another. Aside from the annoying OOC-ness, particularly in the case of Jack & Ianto, that was pretty much kept intact through most of COE. If the new season, and any thereafter, are going to follow the pattern of COE (read, one multiple-episode long story that has a doom-and-gloom ending and a pretty high body count, a large part of which are lead characters), I think it's safe to say that quality that made the show so great, at least for me, is effectively dead :(. I just don't see the point of tuning into a show when lead characters are only around for a short time, then a bunch are killed off in short order to up the ante on the drama.

Thanks for being so understanding :}. And we do have new episodes of Doctor Who to look forward to, yes ;)?

Date: 2010-11-25 03:00 am (UTC)I've been surprised lately by how much I'm starting to look forward to On Stranger Tides despite hating AWE and not watching the entire film since 2007. I was fully prepared to not be excited and then they bring in Penelope Cruz and the rest of the Royal Navy and now I hear Judi Dench and Richard Griffiths will also be appearing in it...

And I mean, how can you go wrong with so much interaction between Jack and Barbossa ;)? It'll probably lose a little bit with the absence of the Will/Elizabeth storyline, or something like it, but not so much that it'll be unwatchable. I probably won't have the opportunity to see it in a theatre, but I'm definitely planning to buy it when it comes out on DVD :).
