Let's Ride the Spaceship!
A couple of weeks passed where Cady persisted in talking Welsh in his presence although James learned a couple of phrases Then, one Friday morning, he and Morgen were awakened by the familiar shrill of his phone.
“Hullo…no…no…absolutely not…shit…please,” he pleaded to the other end, “Fine, I’ll be right there.”
He dropped the thing roughly on the bed and rubbed his face.
“James, I need a favor of you,” Morgen started and James didn’t want to think about what that could be, “I can’t take her today, I have an exam, and I need you to watch her.”
“Me…I believe she’d rather play in traffic,” he retorted.
“Please, please James,” he begged and the older man had never liked being begged to.
“This is a horrible idea in the history of horrible ideas,” James maintained, shaking his head. Morgen nodded, made a grimace and spoke, “Remember when I paid for the taxi the night we met and said that it’d be a favor I’d cash in later?”
Uh oh, this was not good.
“And today’s the day?” the James guessed and the other man nodded. Then, he remembered which Friday this was.
“But tonight’s the dinner party at Ianto’s…” he reminded the other.
“I know,” Morgen spoke, “but I’m sure I can make sure that she gets Cady before that.” James didn’t trust Cady’s mum…Elen as it turned out and how was he supposed to have a four year old at Torchwood? Maybe he could ask for the day away, the others did that sometimes.
About a half an hour later, James held a death grip on Cady who squirmed worse than a fish as they walked into the tourist bureau entrance.
“Morning, Ianto,” he called and the other started, “Morning…”
His blue eyes looked from James to Cady and back again.
“Ianto, this is Cady, Morgen’s daughter and I am responsible for her today,” he stated and wondered what would happen.
“All day?”
“Her mum is supposed to pick her up before the party,” James added.
“Not on my mind right now…actually,” he spoke and Cady stared at him.
“Da bore, enethig,” Ianto told her and she smiled before looking at the taller man, “I like him.”
To further her point, the little girl stepped closer to Ianto and climbed up on a stool beside his. He picked up the receiver, hit a button and said into the phone, “Uh, Jack, we have a bit of a situation here.”
“What sort of situation?”
“Just get up here,” he elaborated and put the phone down before turning to Cady, “did you know the stool has a secret?”
“What sort of secret?” she asked in a whisper.
“It’s a spaceship,” he spoke, moving her a bit so she wasn’t as wedged under the desk, “Now hold on.”
James didn’t know what Ianto was up to until he started spinning the stool so she went around and around and around, giggling all the way. Then, the door opened and Jack walked in, one hand on his holster. The Welshman let go. However, she started to fall so he grabbed her shoulders.
“Do it again, do it again!!” she requested with a pout.
“Who’s this?” their boss questioned, folding his arms.
“Cadence Laura Davies,” she answered, trying to fold her arms but she was still a bit dizzy and Ianto had to catch her again, “Beth yw eich enw chi?”
“Captain Jack Harkness,” he spoke, coming closer, “and I bet you didn’t think I could understand Welsh.”
Her light brown eyes looked away and James hadn’t known that either.
“So, this is Cady and what is she doing here?” he inquired of James.
“Nothing else to be done about it…he said I owed him a favor,” the other man explained and Jack cocked his head.
“Could give you the day off, I suppose…”
“Or we could watch her here,” Ianto suggested and both men glanced at him as though he were crazy because he plainly was.
“Why? It’s very dangerous for a small child and it’s not like proper procedures could apply…”
The Welshman covered her ears and interrupted, “I know we can’t give RetCon to a child, but we don’t need to because she is just a child. The most dangerous items are in the safe and no one would believe her anyway.”
“No, no one would believe me,” she added so the hands were removed since she heard everything anyway. James looked from Jack to Ianto because he had never seen Jack refuse Ianto. His expression softened and he pointed at the youngest of the men, “But I’m putting you in charge of this. I have nothing to do with it.”
There was a smile from Ianto and a nod.
“James, we have some things to discuss,” said Jack and James hesitated, but Cady appeared to prefer Ianto to him.
********************************************************
Ianto waved the two off and turned to the girl, “We’re going to wait here until Gwen comes in. She works here, too.”
“Spaceship!!” she requested and he was perfectly happy to oblige so that when Gwen walked in, they didn’t notice at first.
“And what’s this?” asked a familiar female voice with a laugh. She surprised him into stopping so that the stool wobbled and Cady clutched his jacket for support. He put his arms around her and explained, “Gwen, this is Cady. She’s with us for today. Cady, this is Gwen.”
“Garwn ‘i?” she asked and he had to wonder what made her so mistrustful of strangers for being so young.
“Well…” Gwen prompted; wanting to know the answer so that the girl knew that she knew Welsh as well, but that didn’t change her feelings.
“Yes, we like her…”
“Just not as well as he likes Jack,” she teased a bit too loudly so that Cady buried her head against him. He picked her up and she continued to cling to him.
“Cady?” the woman asked but the girl was having none of it.
“Maybe she’s just tired,” he suggested, heading to the door and holding it open for Gwen to walk through.
“Or she hates me,” she spoke with a frown as they climbed down the stairs. It wasn’t good for her to take it so personally. She just didn’t have experience with small kids. The girl’s light brown eyes widened and she exclaimed, “Wow!” Her gaze was directed towards Myfanwy first before looking at the whole lot and Ianto felt like he was seeing everything for the first time through her. Cady squirmed until he let her down and she stared straight up, before running from the railing where she looked down in the water to jumping on the couch to noticing Martha and running to her.
“Hello,” she spoke and offered a mint from her bag, “My name’s Martha.”
The girl took it but wouldn’t deter from her usual initiation technique, “Beth amdanat ti?”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know any Welsh,” she apologized, leaning down in her chair, “but that’s a very pretty dress you have there.”
Flattery, nice tactic, thought Ianto. Cady held open her blue flowered dress for a moment and then…the old shyness returned and she looked for Ianto, running back to him.
“So, today, just you and me, eh?” he asked, rhetorically.
“YES!” she answered and he nodded, muttering in a soft voice, “complete stranger; that makes total sense.”
Hmm, he was out of practice with trying to come up with activities for four year olds. He could tire her out now and convince her to take a nap, but then, she could be cranky and tired towards the end of the work day…when he had planned on going home early to prepare for the dinner. No, something quiet for now.
“Did you bring anything with you? A book?” he asked, kneeling closer to her height. She shook her head, explaining, “Mum and dad both have books. I don’t bring them. They have them for me.”
“Right,” said Ianto, trying to think of some alternative rather than reading some history book or the Emily Dickinson one. It was not a good idea to read that one aloud ever again.
“I hide and you find me,” Cady suggested, smiling so that all her small, white teeth showed. As much as every rational thought was telling him to refuse her, he did enjoy that game.
“Arhosa ‘ma,” he told her and didn’t stand up until she nodded. Then, he locked a few of the more dangerous rooms like the hothouse. There was also something else he had to pick up and he was happy to see that she remained close to where he left her.
