Skin Cancer in Pets

Skin Cancer is the most common cancer for dogs and the second most common cancer in cats.

Domesticated dogs and cats are NOT meant to be outside for hours on end especially in the sun. Not only are they exposed to ultraviolet radiation but diseases, other animals and cars. It's not a kindness to let them roam free.

For those who will be in the sun a lot, like dogs, there is sunscreen. Sunscreen should provided to all areas without hair or with sparse hair. Try to use sunscreen with Titanium Dioxide but NOT Octyl Salicylate, Homosalate and Ethylhexyl Salicylate.

If your cat is light colored, they also need protection if they frequently sleep in front of sunny windows.

It's also very important to groom your cats and dogs regularly so they're monitored for lumps and infections. Skin cancer in pets can be deadly!

Yes, especially white cats and dogs. They ususally have more pink noses and ear tips that get skin cancer. Thanks for posting this tip.

That's good to know. My kitties are strictly indoor and we have a northern exposure, so we're good.
