Now that ABC has canceled Brothers & Sisters, I've realized I only watched Desperate Housewives because I was going to have ABC on for Brothers & Sisters anyway and I had watched it for so long...

No more, I didn't watch the first hour of the "fabulous" two hour finale. Instead, I watched South Riding on PBS. Then, when I returned to Desperate Housewives one last time, utter stupidity as usual and Ugly Betty's dad got killed. His character on the show was scuzzy but it was still weird.

I did like the potluck round robin dinner thing. I described it to my mom and she said they used to call it a "Jitney Supper". Most would say she was simply remembering wrong but rural Indiana in the mid-20th century had all sorts of weirdness so I side with her. She does admit to some using the term "progressive dinner." I'm guessing that was the form of some humor in the first hour because Bree was involved.

Anyway, the internet also said there is a form in the UK called a "safari supper". Has anyone made this into a Torchwood fic?

It'd be awesome. It's just like a progressive dinner but with clues involved. Can you imagine the Torchwood gang having to make/provide food AND provide clues? Who would half-ass it? Who would go all out? Would Jack try to do a course from his manhole or high above on a rooftop?

A lot of people like to ask, "But what are we going to leave the grand-kids?"

It's a good question but a mountain of debt isn't the only thing to worry about. We have to decide exactly what we want for them.

Do we want them to be healthy and afford to be healthy with the right foods and guidance? Do we want them to be able to breath and have a lessened chance of asthma and allergies than we currently have?

Do we want them to be able to empathize and respect others regardless of economic, political, racial, sexual and other differences?

Do we want them to be able to respect and interact with nature outside a designated park?

Do we want them to be able to swim and encounter healthy, living sea life in the Gulf of Mexico or Alaska or anywhere along our beaches and bodies of water?

Do we want our grandchildren to be able to work in a safe environment where they can communicate their concerns without being fired?

Do we want them to be educated better than we were?

Do we want them to be able to marry the person that they love, regardless of who that is, as long as both are consenting adults?

Do we want them to be able to decide how their bodies will be used or do we want the government to decide for them?

Do we want Wall-E to come true and let the corporations take over?

In spite of everything, I'm still optimistic about the future. If nothing else, I know I'll fight for those grand-kids even if they're imaginary. Are you?

Senator Bill Nelson on Oil Companies:

I believe that special interests have hijacked congressional tax and spending bills for their own gain, at the expense of the public. That’s why I am an original cosponsor of S. 940, the Close Big Oil Tax Loopholes Act. This bill would eliminate tax breaks for large oil companies that make revenue in excess of $100 million per taxable year. As Congress debates measures to improve our fiscal outlook, we must ensure that seniors and working-class Americans are not left holding the bill for these outdated and unnecessary oil subsidies.

Furthermore, we must not allow oil companies to shift the cost of their mistakes to the average taxpayer. That’s why I recently introduced legislation (S.983) to prevent oil companies, such as BP, from deducting the cost of oil spill recovery efforts. Last year, BP announced that they’d use nearly $12 billion in tax savings to offset clean-up costs associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is clear the Gulf oil spill was the result of wrongdoing. Even if BP is technically entitled to these tax deductions under current law, it doesn’t make it right.

I believe we should modernize our tax system to encourage innovation and the development of new, alternative technologies in the energy sector. I support efforts to prevent a rise in energy prices and reduce our dependency on foreign oil, and I’m open to new ideas that will further these goals while protecting our precious environment.
