The Doctor had been waiting for this moment. Finally, he would find out who was behind this war on him and blowing up the universe and everything else going wrong...
Now, who was the guy behind the curtain?
He felt his blindfold pulled off and as his eyes adjusted, there was Jack.
"Jack, good to see you. Got a plan or just rescuing me as you go along?" the Doctor asked and Jack shook his head.
"Right, we need to discover who's behind this," the Doctor agreed but Jack shook his head again.
"I've thought about this day a long time," Jack spoke, "but I always thought I would be happier."
Jack wasn't talking like himself.
"You already stopped me once when I tried to blow up the Tardis and destroy the universe so I had to try something else," Jack spoke in a voice full of despair.
"But why? After all you've done? After everyone you've saved?" the Doctor asked in utter confusion.
"Saved? SAVED?! I killed all of them. If none of this had happened or I'd never have been born or Rose had never met me, they'd still be alive...Steven and Ianto and everyone else..." Jack spoke barely above a whisper.
"Jack..."
"No, haven't you always said that I was a fixed point? That I was wrong? The Master called me a freak," Jack spoke as though holding back tears. The Doctor undid his bonds and stood up.
"Jack, none of this will help. Even if you reset the universe, they're still dead. Steven only existed because Rose made you immortal. Ianto was only born because his mother's mother was a nurse at a hospital and came down with a mysterious illness but lived with no repercussions. In fact, she had had a bad fall off a horse as a teenager and was told she would probably never become pregnant, but her illness fixed that. Jack, you are responsible for so much more good than you can possibly imagine. Don't ruin it all now."
He could feel Jack's resistance fading.
"I just...I'm just...I'm so tired of it all. I have to live forever. Everyone else gets to go and I used to be afraid of the darkness, but..." Jack rambled, "at least it would be over."
Jack dropped to his knees and the Doctor came towards him, taking him in his arms.
"Oh, Jack," he said and hugged him. His mind was full of indecision. However, he had nothing to lose. "One day, you will sacrifice yourself and your body will not come back."
"Promise?" Jack asked in a tone similar to a toddler.
"Yes."
"I'd like that," Jack admitted and there was silence for a moment before he continued in a whisper. "Do you think there might be something beyond the darkness? Where they'll all be there? Ianto and Steven and everyone else?"
The Doctor thought of Sarah Jane and the Brigadier and Adric and Astrid and his own family and so many, many others.
"Maybe," he allowed himself to say but couldn't add aloud what he was thinking.
I hope so.
