Josh radnor
Jan. 17th, 2013 02:29 pmso, I'm watching happythankyoumoreplease and my main thought is...Josh radnor, where have you been all my life?
Other than on my television every Monday night?
He directed and wrote this film and I love it! It's adorable and intimate and funny and thoughtful, very inspired by Allen and almodovar but succeeding so much on its own.
I need to find his other films...and he needs to make more, hehe.

The Paperboy
Jan. 17th, 2013 09:16 pmWe literally see every Zac Efron movie but then, you add in Matthew McConaughey AND having it based in Florida, The Paperboy was definitely a must-see film even though we had to drive down to Bradenton to do it. Bradenton was the only one to get Orson Welles and Me, too.
I mentioned before that Matthew McConaughey impressed the hell out of me twice in 2012 when I reviewed Killer Joe. I know the other film was assumed to be Magic Mike, but it was actually this. McConaughey's character appears to be the standard good-ole boy but as the film goes on, he's actually a closet case full of self-loathing. He's amazing and riveting but many of the performances in this film totally impressed me from people I usually write off.
I wrote off John Cusack a long time ago. I just figured anyone who would make Serendipity likes a more relaxed form of acting; that he was incapable of playing someone darker. I was wrong. He is thoroughly UNLIKABLE in this film. In every scene, he's able to exude sleazeball. Even his physical appearance is changed so that his hair is black and greasy.
I know I'm pushing this since I just asked for Anthony Mackie to be cast in a Marvel movie last spring but he IS now playing Falcon so...
Can we please have David Oyelowo in a Marvel movie? I've loved him MI5/Spooks and he just gets more awesome. He's one of those people like Hugh Laurie where you have to tell people he's British because his American accent is that good.
I also found Nicole Kidman to be empathetic and believable which is a lot more than most of her roles. Unfortunately, Zac Efron needs to branch out more with his acting. His roles seem to be very similar.
It was filmed in Louisiana but you couldn't tell it from the film. It FELT like Florida. It looked like Florida and the way it addressed Florida back in the 60s...it felt like one of those movies where when people don't understand the south, you can just make them watch it. It's messy. It's complicated. It's full of characters you want to hug one moment and strangle the next which should be expected from being directed by Lee Daniels.
A lot of people didn't seem to like it but we did. It's dark. It doesn't have the Hollywood ending but we agreed that we were both glued to the edge of our seats, not knowing what would come next, and the performances were a revelation.
Someday, I'll make my Top 5 list of films to watch to truly "understand" southerners.
