Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Dec. 29th, 2014 09:17 pmI know Stephen Colbert explained the mechanics behind a lightsaber having a crossguard, but I never disagreed about the mechanics. I thought the design itself was stupid.
A crossguard is meant to protect the hand and while I can see where it could prevent lords of the Sith who also happened to be your biological father from cutting your hand off...
I can also see plenty of possibilities for Dewey Cox-like accidents where you accidentally cut yourself in half or at least lop off limbs. Then, there's the increased possibility of accidents like Tenel Ka. For those who didn't read the former Star Wars Expanded Universe, Tenel Ka took shortcuts in making her lightsaber so it wasn't made properly and she lost an arm because of it.
Wouldn't more outlets for the crystal also mean more possibilities for it exploding?
There's a swordsmith who doesn't like the idea either:

I know the comics have had similar lightsabers but they also had that Jabba the Hutt was more humanoid so...they're not always accurate.
The best part for me is when there's all that scary music and the guy just bursts into frame. It makes me jump every SINGLE TIME!
No, I never thought his skin color was odd for a stormtrooper. I spent almost twenty years of my life not knowing they were clones and I still don't believe all of them under the Empire were clones. Otherwise, what was the point of the academy that Han Solo and Biggs went to?
Also, all the clones are based off a man who's biracial anyway.
Did the Empire and the rebellion stifle innovation in the universe? It almost seems backwards compared to the first six films. My mom compared the speeder to "It looks like they turned Luke's vehicle on its side". The whole thing reminds me of the Doctor Who episode where he finds out that the consequences of knocking out Satellite 5 is that humanity was lost for 150 years, never fully recovering and becoming prey to Daleks. Although I suppose you'll argue that most of the trailer appeared to be on Tatooine which was always backwards.
Why are there still stormtroopers? I get that they still exist and thus, it's cheaper just to keep them but doesn't that NOT spread cheer and motivation towards a new government if they're using the old stuff?
Unless this is like the Timothy Zahn books and there are outposts still supportive of the Empire?
It would be nice not to have a repeat of all the politics and how building a new republic sucks...this is basically what I learned from most of Leia's plotlines in the books; building a new republic sucks, being a working mother sucks, being a pseudo Jedi sucks...she always seemed so unhappy unless they were having a romantic scene between her and Han.
No, I never recognized Andy Serkis' voice.
And one final reason why I hate the crossguards, you can't have a sexy picture like this one where he's leaning into them:
