So, my mom and I were at Epcot last week and this was on a chalkboard that they use for trivia questions in various places:

What do people in the united kingdom call soda?

Naturally, we were intrigued. We'd assumed they called soda...sods so we asked the nice lady from Scotland, who sounded just like Amy, what soda is called. She said "pop" which was bizarre. Pop, just like a Northerner! Then, she said some call it juice which is even more bizarre still. How does that work? If I asked for an orange juice from that person, would I wind up with a Fanta?

Being an ex brit if you ask for orange Juice that's what you would get.

Oh, lemonade made from real lemons and real sugar is just heavenly! A lot of the outdoor events here will even have free or reduce priced refills for lemonade.

Thanks for answering!

In the north of England we call it 'pop' (but they don't, I think, in the south), or a 'fizzy drink', or a 'soft drink' or we ask for it by name -- Coke, Sprite, etc*. Manufacturers often call it a 'sparkling drink'. If you asked for 'orange juice' in England, you'd definitely get real juice, but I don't know about Scotland...

* If you ever get the chance to try Vimto, which was invented as a beer substitute, and is made in the north of England (from elderberries), do! It's lovely!

Ooh, could you tell me what makes Iron Bru so good? They have it at Target and some grocery stores but it just seemed like an energy drink to us from the ingredient list so I didn't try it.

I'm from the South of England. I would normally just ask for a drink by name (Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, etc.), but overall I suppose I'd say 'soft drink'. :)

I don't know of anyone who would call a soft drink 'juice'. Maybe that's just the Scots?
