They're called insurance and pharmaceutical companies. Last month, the FDA wanted all drugs known as Makena to have the same formula so nobody would have the misfortune of a version not made as well. They awarded the sole responsibility of making Makena to KV Pharmaceutical.

Last month, a dose of the medication cost $10-20 each time but now that KV has exclusive rights, they've increased that price to as much $1,500 a dose!!!

Makena is used to prevent premature labor.

They're killing babies: wanted babies, babies being planned by parents who love them very much already but could never afford to pay that!

KV says the cost is justified to avoid the mental and physical disabilities that can come with very premature births except that parents and insurance companies won't be able to pay for the drug in the first place. We will see a rise in babies born too young to survive past birth or having to be in incubators for months.

Why can't those who spend so much time and effort to "protect" fetuses in the first trimester spend that much time and effort to protect those in the third?

They don't want to protect them after they're born, either. "Protecting fetuses" has never been the point; the point has been to try to control half the population in a very basic way. If they could think of a way to control men similarly, I think they'd take it - I'm not sure it's a sexist mindset so much as it's a "well, but what can we DO to them that we wouldn't also be doing to ourselves?" regarding men.

Considering most of the rules are made by men...I find that hard to believe.

Men aren't the majority; without help from enough women complicit in their own subjugation, the ones imposing power couldn't do it. Likewise, there are men who believe in equality - and they too couldn't be thwarted if not for an unnerving number of women helping those who don't. Trust me, men with that much power don't want the everyday Joe (or Jane) acquiring more than themselves. But at this point there are just more opportunities to keep women impoverished, legally.

Well why don't you ask the Obama administration why the FDA was allowed to give the bid for the medication to only one company? The person running the FDA was appointed by Obama, and she's well-aware (or should have been, if she understands anything) that by awarding sole responsibility of a drug to one maker (thereby removing competition to keep prices down) that the price would sky rocket.

Blame the FDA, not the insurance companies.

And if you read anywhere besides liberal blogs, you would see that like many drug companies, they are willing to offer assistance to women who can't afford the drug. AND to top it off, while insurance companies are wary of the price hike, it should be noted that Medicaid is also wary of saying that they'll cover it.

So before you get on a frickin' high horse about evil, evil, evil insurance companies, get your facts straight.

The FDA thought they were protecting women and children by having one formula as opposed to all the variants that might not have worked as well or had unknown side effects.

No, I don't think they expected the company to take advantage of pregnant women like that. Remember, us Democrats tend to be naive and think people will do the right thing?

I have read many articles about it, including one in the local paper, and although many drug companies offer assistance if you qualify by their rules, I have not read KV ever saying that they will specifically help women unable to pay for Makena.

Of course, Medicaid would be wary as well the insurance companies. None of them can afford that much money which means they'll have to refuse that treatment.

However, that doesn't mean the insurance companies aren't still evil: Nervy Nan can tell you first-hand how they led to patients' deaths.

You are correct in blaming the FDA. This is why we need more government regulations, not fewer. Time and again it's been proven the capitalist system cannot be relied upon to regulate its own avaricious tendencies for the good of the public.
