Invasion of the Toddlers
Not long after that, Jack discovered that inside the building was a special play area just for toddlers. The two boys had run off as soon as possible. Jack watched with a worried expression and Rachel laughed.
"He's your first, isn't he? I know that look. When Joel was little, that's Harry's brother, I never wanted him out of my sight. I was pretty bonkers, but with Harry, it's better. I'm more relaxed. We're even trying for a third," she said with a smile as he noticed her wedding ring, "It'll be better the second time."
Jack supposed in some ways she was right. He'd never been such an involved parent before so it was more like Iefan was his first. However, he was also very protective of his last physical link with Ianto especially when they hadn't talked in months, like he was really dead.
"How old is he?" Rachel asked.
"Twenty months yesterday," Jack told her.
"Blimey, his mum must be tall too then. I'd have pegged him for closer to three," she said with surprise. He looked back at Selene who was watching them. Had she even told Rachel anything?
"I suppose you could say the surrogate was tall," Jack admitted and she shrunk away. An embarrassed look on her face.
"My husband says I chat too much and sometimes, it explodes in my face, like now. I'm sorry," she rambled, "It gets lonely, batty but it's true. When all you have is a toddler and his videos for hours on end, it's so good just to be around another adult."
She laughed in a nervous way. Jack could still remember.
"I wouldn't call it lonely, but I was bored," he spoke, "I stayed at home with Iefan until he was eight months."
"Oh, so you understand then. Brilliant!" Rachel exclaimed and her blue eyes lit up.
"Rachel calls me at least once a week at lunch to remind herself of the outside world," Selene added with a grin and Rachel laughed again.
"It's true," she confirmed, "but don't misunderstand me, I love doing it. I love being there for him. I just get these moments sometimes where I want more, or at least someone old enough to have a real conservation."
Jack found himself nodding. He'd never even told Rhi about that.
"My husband, Declan, works at the hospital, that's how Selene and I met. What does your significant other do? Selene told me you work with her for that special government project agency thing," Rachel spoke and Jack looked for Iefan. He was trying to climb on top of a tube.
"Uh, Jack..." Selene started and moved closer as if there was danger ahead.
"No, I'm fine," Jack cut her off, "Iefan's father died before he was born. He never got to see him."
"Oh...oh, Jack, I'm...I'm sorry, I don't know what to say," Rachel uttered and didn't look at him. However, he could practically feel Selene's eyes on him, waiting to see what he would do next.
"It's not like you killed him," he said and felt a hand on his coat. It didn't take much skill to hear Selene saying, 'And you didn't either' in her head. He nodded, but had a suspicion Selene would be making a note of it. Shrieks echoed in the area from the toddlers. Then, her mobile rang. He watched Selene look at the caller before excusing herself. Harry came running back.
"Dug!" he yelled and held his hands out.
"Dug is safe," Rachel told him and took out a raggedy blue dolphin, "but he's staying with me. You'll lose him."
Harry pouted but seemed to give up.
"Does Iefan have a favourite toy like that?" Rachel asked and Jack reached in the nappy bag for Faba.
"Aww, adorable...what is it?" she asked.
"An alien," he admitted and she laughed, "His godfather gave it to him."
"This is the first time she's let me meet one of her coworkers, always so mysterious, 'secrets act and all'," Rachel said with another laugh. Jack's inclination was to change the topic or something to avoid saying anything but he knew he was supposed to talk.
"I think I'm sort of a special project," he uttered in a low voice.
"Oh, one of those," Rachel said with a grin, "She gets those from time to time. Her cat, Conan, was half-dead when she found him but now he runs around and all. She usually succeeds with her projects. Declan always says she's one of the best doctors he's ever worked with. If she can't fix you, no one can."
Jack looked at his watch to see whether the afternoon was up yet. They'd only been there half an hour.
"Jack, give me your phone before you start watching that, too," said Selene, walking up. He gave it to her since he had been tempted to take it out. Jack wondered what Gwen had wanted, but couldn't tell from any outward signs. However, Selene seemed nervous for some reason. Not that Jack had much time to think about this before Iefan came running over.
"Juge, taddy," Iefan begged and pointed at the nappy bag. Jack took out the sippy cup and gave it to him. Iefan ran off with it and Rachel giggled.
"I hope you have extras because you're never going to see that cup again," she said with a smile. Rachel was right. He hadn't been thinking. Those things should include GPS. Still, it was starting to be a bit fun. They stayed a while longer before Rachel yelled for Harry to come.
"Harry needs his afternoon nap and Joel will be coming home soon. Pleasure to meet you, Jack," she said and he wondered if he should offer his hand but her hands were full.
"Selene, phone me later," Rachel spoke and headed off. As they left, Iefan pulled on his trousers and asked, "Ware Arry?"
"They had to leave. Harry needed a nap and I bet you do, too," Jack told him.
"No," Iefan said and shook his head.
"Do you want me to come with you? Until he's settled down?" Selene asked which he found kind of strange.
"No, he'll be fine. Gwen probably needs you or she wouldn't have called," Jack said and shifted Iefan into his arms with the nappy bag on the other shoulder.
"Right," she agreed and took out his mobile. Iefan reached for it and Jack leaned so the nappy bag was in her direction. She plopped it into a pocket.
When Jack came home, Alice and Lucia were already asleep on the couch.
"See," he said to Iefan who ran over to lie down with them. He dumped the nappy bag on the low table and took out the mobile. Apparently, Selene had turned it off. He turned it back on and waited for it to go back to normal. There were six missed calls with the newest one being from Rhi. A sick feeling came over him. Six missed calls was never a good thing. His mind went back to the time the Doctor had a similar number because of Iefan's birth. He phoned Rhi first.
"What is it?" he asked before she had a chance to say anything.
"I need you to be here. You have to be here when I tell her," Rhi spoke with worry in her voice.
"Why? What is it?" Jack asked. Had her cancer got worse? Was she going to die? What had happened?
"It's Sarah Jane. She's died and you know how fond Mica is of her," Rhi told him and he tried not to drop the device.
"What? Sarah Jane? But..." Jack sputtered, not wanting to believe the news.
"Luke phoned me, he's been phoning everyone...poor boy...well, he's twenty-three but...it still hurts being on your own like that..."
"I'll...I'll be right over," Jack said and ended the call. He watched the three of them sleeping. Part of him expected one of them to wake up: wanted one of them to wake up so he wouldn't feel so alone.
Sarah Jane was dead.
It kept repeating in his head like some cruel joke. He kissed the three of them on the forehead.
Jack was almost out the door when he heard a voice, "Dad, where are you going?"
He looked back at Alice and her expression changed, "What's wrong?"
With a few steps, he found himself back at the couch.
"An old friend of mine died. Mica knew her, too. I have to go," he said and the shock was starting to give way to wanting to cry.
"Oh, dad..."
"Can you watch Iefan?" he asked.
"Yeah, of course," she said with a nod and touched his arm.

Date: 2011-07-25 03:17 am (UTC)However, it has been such a long time because of work and Harry Potter and stuff that I was a bit paranoid about quality...
but I can't find a beta. I may have to post and hope for the best.

Date: 2011-07-31 04:06 pm (UTC)I loved her hunting down the doctor and being suspiciously helpful because that is so exactly right. I was getting antsy all when will she get on the TARDIS will she be refused and stowaway only for the curveball of SJS and I know Elizabeth Sladen passed but I didn't know the fic would do tribute to that and it is and that is so awesome/ sad because more Sarah Jane is amazing but this is also interesting and fits the fic and I love it so much!
Also Iefan and Lucia are cute, I keep wondering when people will figure out loud both are slightly psychic and that starts some of their fights. Also is Alice having boy girl twins? it would mean Lucia and Iefan are right because they can sort of hear a baby a piece and meep! just meeep and squee and this is awesome!

Date: 2011-08-04 03:23 am (UTC)Some of them are aware that Iefan is psychic. Jack hasn't really tried to hide that from close friends and family, but everyone assumes Lucia is "normal".
You'll just have to see on the baby front...
