Spaghetti Will Have to Do
Jack remembered the Doctor said Arcadia had been destroyed in the Time War. James bent down to pick up the things from tea and Jack shook his head.
“I’ll get them,” he spoke and although James hesitated, he walked away. Gwen had already left.
“I…I not…not sleepy,” Cady spoke; her words were broken up by yawns. Ianto had slumped so his head rested on the left armrest and he rubbed a hand down her back, but she still stood straight. For the first time in a couple of millennia, something about the tired child made him remember. He remembered his mom singing a song to Grey although she said she had sung it to him as well. The words easily came to his lips although they were not in English. Her mouth opened to speak except her eyes closed and then, her mouth followed. Jack adjusted her position so she used Ianto’s side as a pillow.
“That’s beautiful, Jack, I didn’t even know you could sing,” said Martha’s voice from behind him.
Thinking about it, he didn’t recall singing in front of her or much singing at all since Trea was taken from him. He finally felt like he could sing again.
“Perhaps I’ll do it more often,” he spoke, glancing at her a moment before continuing to watch them sleep.
“She’s a lot cuter when she’s asleep,” she commented, standing beside him.
“They usually are,” Jack replied yet he felt a pang as her little hands reached in sleep to get a better grip on Ianto’s form. Martha clasped his shoulders before leaving them and he dragged himself away to his office to get one thing. When he returned to the couch, he laid his coat on top of them…in case they got cold. He also had an idea about how James could help Ianto.

James stood in the Tourist Centre room, waiting for Morgen an hour later. He was looking at a picture of Ianto, Tosh and Gwen on the desk.
“How about I drive the two of you to Ianto’s and he can pick her up there? Jack suggested, wearing his coat and ready to go. Ianto sat on the couch close to the garage while Cady was in James’ arms, but only because she was asleep.
When she wakes, she’ll resume her hatred of me, he thought.
“He’ll come,” he spoke, trying to be assertive in his voice.
“Like the other night when you waited an hour?”
“Something came up,” James defended him to Jack’s unchanging face before taking out his mobile, “I’ll call him and you’ll see.”
He hit a few wrong buttons before finally highlighting Morgen’s name and pressing Send. His exam should have been over a couple hours ago yet it went straight to voicemail.
“He forgot to turn it back on. He said it was customary to turn them off for such things, yes?” James asked and the other man nodded although it was slow and he still seemed suspicious. Jack had liked Morgen at first, why couldn’t he now?
“Ianto won’t mind another guest,” Jack added and James began to follow after him.
“Especially her, they get on like they’ve always known each other,” James complained and saw the other smile.
“Well, Ianto has an unfair advantage in these cases…,” he trailed off to James’ annoyance.
“Do tell,” he told him to no avail.
“No, he wouldn’t want me…telling people,” Jack spoke, once again proving who was really in charge in their relationship. It was sweet though and definitely more than he had with Morgen at the moment. They made their way down where Jack put his arm around Ianto, helping him into the garage and the vehicle.
It had almost been a month since James had last seen Ianto’s house and he appreciated it a lot more now that he knew how most, including himself, had to make do with small flats.
“A house!” Cady exclaimed and ran to the front door.
“Yep,” the Welshman answered, taking out his keys, “It belonged to my mum and dad.”
The fact that he so rarely talked about them now made sense.
“Then, you still live with them?” she asked which was the wrong thing to do. James cringed but Ianto just shook his head and replied, “No, they gave it to me.”
“Wow, that was nice of them,” the little girl remarked as he unlocked the opened the door for them.
“Yep,” Ianto agreed but Cady had already gone ahead so only James saw Jack give him a little squeeze.
Inside wasn’t as new and strange as he remembered. In fact, he felt quite comfortable as though it wanted to be lived in rather his flat which was all new or Morgen’s which just had the best he could afford. James went from piece to piece, looking at everything now he knew what most of it was. Some were antiques while others had to be new and his attention turned to a cabinet in the main room with a glass door. At the time, he thought the design looked odd but now he knew; it was cracked. He wondered why it hadn’t been fixed.
“James, just the man I want to see,” said Jack and he had the definite impression that he was going to be asked to do something, “Come with me to the kitchen.”
“Jack, what are you up to?” asked Ianto as they entered. The older man merely smiled and set James in the middle before tying a cloth around him.
“Since Ianto is unable to make tonight’s meal, he’s going to tell you how to,” said their boss with a smile.
“Jack…” both of the other men complained and he shook his head.
“Jack, there’s no way I can talk him through Shrimp Fried Rice,” Ianto spoke from his perch on a wooden stool and his lover walked over, putting his arms around him.
“I know you have spaghetti. We should be able to make that work and a salad,” he told him in a calm voice.
“I just…I just wanted everything to be perfect,” the younger man muttered, “I…”
He was silenced by a kiss and James felt that he shouldn’t be watching yet he couldn’t look away.
“I’m going to cook for you on your birthday…anything you want,” Jack promised, after pulling away, “but you’re hurting right now and I don’t want you making it worse so you’re going to stay on that stool.”
Ianto looked away, frowning before whispering, “Okay, but I expect two desserts.”
“Of course,” he agreed and said something into his ear so that James couldn’t hear but the younger man blushed.
“I will leave you two to the kitchen while I make sure that Cady doesn’t burn the house down or something,” Jack spoke and with that, he took his leave of them.
James felt there was something he should say.
“I have never cooked. Before my death, there were cooks and at present, I go to close restaurants or order pizza on the phone like you showed me,” he explained and Ianto’s face paled. He closed his eyes.
“First, hand me the ice pack from the refrigerator…” he spoke, “and then I’ll try to teach you.”
***********************************************************
“It’s like a cross between Ikea and an estate sale,” said Gwen a while later to Martha who’d just arrived. Gwen and Rhys had only been there for about twenty minutes. Martha studied a Welsh dragon, nodded and added, “Not sure exactly what I was expecting.”
“I’m curious whether Jack’s moved in at all…last time, you couldn’t even tell that he had a boyfriend,” the Gwen explained and held a hand out to the young man with Martha, “You must be Tom.”
“It’s a pleasure, Gren…”
“Gwen,” she corrected him and he looked embarrassed before a second before ignoring it. Instead, he just shook her hand
“Let’s play princesses!” Cady exclaimed very loudly and Gwen glanced at her husband who smiled.
“Jack, what happened to this cabinet?” she asked, trying to ignore the request, “I don’t remember it broken before.”
“It wasn’t,” Jack answered with a frown, stepping closer, “It broke in the explosions last month, but he won’t have it fixed.”
Gwen touched the unbroken glass above the crack and thought she understood. It was left broken in their honor. Suddenly, she felt like she needed air.
“Rhys, take a walk with me…” she suggested in a way that was more like pleading and he nodded, taking her hand. They walked through the kitchen to the back door and into Ianto’s small garden.
