Chapter Seven: The Last Letter

Lupin was in his room when Harry found him. The former Hogwarts professor sat in a chair, looking at a photo album. These particular pages were blank except for a large photo of three small children. Harry recognised himself as one of the two with black hair and there was also the girl with red hair again.

The thought occurred to Harry that the pictures from his photo album had partially come from Remus. Remus turned past blank pages to an obviously earlier time where there was a large wedding portrait. Lily wore a baby blue dress while his father wore a tux. There were other familiar faces, but curiosity got the better of Harry and before he could ask who the girl was, Remus had shut the book.

“She’s someone from a long time ago,” said Lupin who had a worn look in his eyes as if he had seen too much. He sighed and leaned back in his chair.

“I’m going to be going away,” said Lupin.

“Why?” asked Harry, who didn’t like the tone in Remus’ voice.

“The moon’s full in four days,” explained his elder.

“That hasn’t stopped you before,” said Harry. Lupin stood up and put the book into a satchel.

“I’m on a mission from Dumbledore,” said Lupin and the younger wizard found himself almost wishing that Remus wasn’t part of the Order.

“I don’t want you to go,” said Harry, knowing he sounded like a child.

“You’ll see me again,” said Lupin, picking up the satchel.

“But you can’t promise that.”

“No, I can’t, but I’ll do my best,” said Lupin. He moved closer to Harry and clasped his shoulder. Harry turned it into a hug and when it was over, Lupin disapparated. Noise from downstairs alerted Harry to the arrival of the twins and he went to see what was going on.

Katie and Ginny distracted Molly while Fred and George gave Arthur a fake wand and a pepper-up mint.

“Thank you boys, I need to get back to the office. Oliver Wood had a matter he wanted to discuss with me and your mother would put up more fuss.”

He stood up although a hand still went to his side and he winced. After he disappeared, Harry asked, “Why didn’t your dad go to St. Mungo’s again?”

The twins looked to see if their mum or one of their siblings was going to barge in and they admitted, “Some of the wizards are secretly speaking out against the hospital. There have been too many suspicious deaths. Dad’s afraid of what may happen if he goes back.”

Harry wondered what would happen if the Death Eaters took over, but Molly came in, quickly putting two and two together.

“Fred and George!”

They saw Crookshanks bound up the stairs and seemed to come up with an escape plan.

“We were just on our way to clean the…the.”

Harry mouthed attic and George saw it.

“The attic,” he said, triumphantly.

Molly pursed her lips together. She had that expression one should fear. If the twins were younger, he was sure it'd be followed by some sort of punishment. Surely, they were too old for her to give them chores...

“The attic has been cleaned out wonderfully by the children. On the other hand, no one has even started on what’s behind the umbrella stand door.”

Both sides underestimated the other especially Molly.

“Of course, mum,” answered Fred to Molly’s surprise. She backed down, “No, you can’t. Why don’t you wait for Remus?”

“He’s already left,” Harry informed her and Molly seemed to remember, but the damage was done. She had given permission to Fred and George and they were eager as the look in their eyes could attest. Katie kissed Fred briefly and said she would look after the shop. She left the long way so that Ginny could go with her.

"At least Ginny won't be trying to help you this way," Molly remarked with a frown. Still, she watched as her twins tried for four unsuccessful minutes to open the door.

"Best leave it to Hagrid or Remus, someone with more experience then," Molly said and left the area.

George, full of pent-up frustration, gave up and pulled at the door handle with all his might. It gave only a metallic clangle in return.

“Sorry,” said Harry at their failure. He was curious what was behind the door, too.

“It’s been the start of a great day,” muttered Fred. Harry agreed.

George smiled and said, “At least Bagman always provides some amusement.”

“He’s always at our shop…he even asked us for a job.”

“Sounds like he’s trying to avoid his Ministry of Magic position,” said Harry, not completely surprised. The twins laughed.

“Wouldn’t you if you were forced to work with Fudge everyday?”

“He was demoted again?” asked Harry.

George nodded and said, “They should just sack him and be done with it, no one in their right mind wants that poor excuse of a former minister of magic around.”

“Except for our git brother,” added Fred, softly.

“I still can’t believe he shoved him,” said Harry.

“And where have you two been?” asked Fred as Ron and Hermione arrived on the scene.

“Upstairs,” said Ron, being extremely descriptive. Hermione rolled her eyes and responded, “We were talking with Phineas.”

******************************************************

Harry went into the kitchen for a snack a few days later, but found it full of people. Ginny wore a peculiar looking blue flower while Ron and Hermione read through their letters, but everyone looked up at Harry’s entrance, including Tonks. Then she reached into her work robe and pulled out a letter.

“It’s not from Mafalda Hopkirk, is it?”

“No, no, it’s your Hogwarts letter,” said Tonks, “The very last one.”

Harry took it from her, but the implications were starting to hit him. Only six years ago, he had entered the school for the very first time and now it was all coming to an end.

“Harry, look!” said Hermione, showing him her Head Girl badge.

“Wicked, what about you, Ron?” he asked but Ron shook his head.

“Maybe it was you,” he said, in a somewhat hopeful voice. Harry looked at his envelope. It looked like the same size it normally was, but a thought ran through Harry’s mind about how great it would be to be Head Boy like his father was.

He ripped it open so that his palm would catch anything that fell.

Nothing but the letters from McGonagall came out. He was to wear the same Quidditch Captain badge from the previous year.

“I guess that’s it then. We’ll take it easy while Hermione has to do all the work,” said Ron and they noticed Hermione’s expression sour as a thought occurred to her.

“What if it’s Malfoy?” she asked. They all shuddered at the thought.

“It probably is,” said Ginny, not helping. She was playing absentmindedly with her prefect badge.

“I wonder why they came so late this year,” said Hermione, wanting to change subjects badly, “We’ve barely seen Professor McGonagall all summer.”

Tonks looked up from her biscuit at the path the conversation was going.

“She wasn’t there for the group portrait,” said Ginny and Harry thought of the picture that Moody had shown him.

“She wasn’t in the first Order picture either.”

************************************************************

Lupin was walking through the woods. Which would seem to be deserted except for the caravan he was walking past. There was a little girl with a doll and he watched her with a wistful expression. They grew up so fast. It was hard to believe the baby boy he once held in his arms was about to start his final year at Hogwarts. So much depended on him and that was a lot for a young man to shoulder. He'd tried to be there more for Harry since Sirius had died but he was spread thin between duties for the Order and his monthly inconvenience.

***************************************************************

Tonks heard steps and looked up to see who it was. The teenagers were oblivious.

“You must be lacking in work to do if you have time to gossip about your elders,” said Snape, entering. Ginny and Ron tried their hardest, but couldn’t come up with a comeback despite it being summer break. Surely, he couldn’t take points during summer break?

They cleared out and Tonks offered him a chocolate.

“Gladly,” said Snape, his head killing him so much that even she could tell. Snape took a seat, closed his eyes and muttered, “I can’t get away from them.”

Tonks knew a number of possibilities for “them” so she picked the light-hearted one.

“They’ll be graduating soon,” she said and added, “then they’ll be free to speak to you as Severus.”

Nice little chapter! I think it would be too uneven if two Gryffindors got to be Head Boy & Girl... but I guess it never occurred to Harry & Ron.

I think the realization for Harry must be bittersweet that this is his last year at Hogwarts.

And it was realistic how he held his hand out to catch something from the envelope.

Wonder where Lupin is going?? And why McGonagall is so busy??
