I was just watching GAC and they referred to Brad Paisley as 'the old veteran".

*facepalm*

I'd hate to think what they'd call Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks or Randy Travis or...George Jones, Kris Kristofferson or Loretta Lynn...you know, the actual veterans of country music?

*headdesk* I still think of Brad as a newcomer on the scene! Of course, I'm old and grew up with Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Loretta and Tammy and bands like the Oak Ridge Boys! I still consider Garth, Clint Black, Randy Travis and Alan Jackson as mere striplings!

I've got myself a bit out of touch with country music the past few years, so I don't even know who the new newcomers are - a sad state of affairs for me!

I know!!!

I was heavily into country and music in general until I got to college where I had cable for the first time, hehe...

It was more than that though, I didn't like the way things were headed. I mean the Barbara Mandrell country pop is cute and all, but it's not REAL country and it was having a total resurgence.

One of the worst things about it was I was at a FYE with my friends and heard a little kid ask their mom if the lady was Britney Spears since she was blonde and dressed vaguely like a hooker.

It was Faith Hill...the shame...

I'm a traditionalist, as I think you might be, so while I might not be from Texas, I think "if you're going to play" country music, "you gotta have a fiddle in the band." We had an oldies country music station for a while and by oldies, I mean, Hank Williams SENIOR.

I HATE that Taylor Swift has won multiple awards as a country musician because to me, she's just not a country musician. If you're able to play the song on a country music channel AND MTV, it's not country.

Sometimes, it felt like Brad Paisley was single-handedly preserving the old style for future generations.

...but yeah, I've lost track, too. I also hate how people stereotype people who like country music as conservative Republicans...

I'm English - here, if you say you like country music, people give you really strange looks, like you crawled out from under a rock. Country music is really looked down on by the majority of people here. I was bullied at school because of my tasye in music, but I still love Waylon and Willie, Tompall Glaser, Jerry Jeff Walker and so many others, including the guy no one else seems to have heard of - Joe Sun! His version of Out Among The Stars still gives me chills. I even (back when I was able to go out and do things like normal people) saw Johnny Cash on stage. Oh, and Marty Robbins, who was an amazing showman and kept the audience in stitches between songs - much like John Barrowman does today. Never did get to see Waylon live, but Mum has seen Willie Nelson twice - he's her pin-up, I think he's a year younger than mum!

I grew up stuck somewhere between dad's love of classical music and mum's love of Jim Reeves, then mum bought a compilation LP because it had Jim Reeves on it, so I heard Waylon and Jerry Reed for the first time, and it was just love at first hearing. I have a HUGE record collection, and I've got a USB turntable so I can convert all my LPs to MP3 tracks for my iPod and have them on CDs too. It'll mean I don't wear the records out!

I like some stuff that isn't country, too, but country is my first and most abiding love when it comes to music!

Ooh, lucky, we weren't able to listen to our records as much as we used to so we gave them away so others could enjoy them.

Also, I had bought most of the albums on cd, like Michael Jackson's Thriller and The Highwaymen...whenever I hear that title song now, I tend to think of Jack, hehe...

Love the Highwaymen, those four guys were so good together and now only two remain. I got the third Highwaymen CD, the first two are on LP. While we're having work done on the house, everything is in storage (well, the records aren't, even with the workmen I'm hoping they'll be safer here simply because we didn't have anything we could pack so many records in). The USB deck is at my boyfriend's for safety - he bought it for me in the first place - so I can't listen to records, but once the house is straight I can get on with converting everything and putting it all on MP3 discs which I can play on my little stereo, with everything backed up to a couple of external hard drives. It's going to take months so I guess I'll start with my favourites first!
