Previously, the Commander in Chief has only sent condolence letters to the families of those who died either in combat or as a result of non-combat incidents in a war zone.

However, those soldiers who commit suicide have still served our country at war and paid a price for it.

So, now Obama and future presidents will be giving their families condolence letters as well. I think it's a great idea and I hope it serves to open more communication about suicide and getting help. It's still often taboo and that has to change. Military suicides are at an all-time high so we can't afford to have judgement and blame put on individuals brave enough to come forward about needing help.
