Delaware

Gwen watched in horror at the smoke coming from the unit. Her dad was gone.
Then, the lights went out and there was a scream.

"That wasn't us," Gwen whispered into the mobile.

"No, it wasn't," Rhys spoke in an equally worried tone.

"No, it was me," said a voice behind her. She turned to see an old man in a ballcap with a low powered torch. With certainty, she knew she had never seen this man in her life but he was nodding at her.

"You're a hard woman to get a hold of, Gwen Cooper," he stated. He knew her name.

"Who are you?" she asked and couldn't help pointing her mobile like it was a gun.

"A concerned parent, but Canton or Delaware will do, what's the objective here?" he answered with a question of his own.

"It's too late. My dad's...gone," she forced out and nodded towards the smoke stack still puffing out whiffs of black smoke.

"My god, they've burned them..." he said in shocked realization and she didn't care. She waved her mobile, asking, "Why? Why didn't you come sooner? You could have stopped them!"

His face became sadder as he explained, "I had business in the desert. It appears the opposite can be just as true...the immortal become mortal."

"I know," Gwen agreed without really comprehending it because as he said it, she kept thinking of her dad. He was supposed to always be there. Canton took his cap off, took a deep breath and put it back on again.

"There's nothing more to be done here, but maybe they weren't on a timer. We could still stop them somewhere else...maybe blow this one up first so it can't be used again," he suggested but she shook her head. She knew his words made sense yet...

"No, leave it. I want people to know what they did," Gwen said and felt her eyes water. "Why me?"

"I'm fairly certain my son's in trouble. If anyone can find him, Torchwood can. I trust the Doctor and his associates more than what passes for an agent these days," he said and she tried not to stare. Gwen thought she had read everything on the Doctor. At least, she had read everything Ianto had given her but she had never heard of this man. Even though he seemed genuine, he could be a spy.

"Who's your son?" she asked, checking that Rhys was on the other line.

"Rex Matheson."
