The Candy Game
Mica hadn't noticed Jack coming up the stairs or into the attic until his arms were around her.
"Uncle Jack, Sarah Jane's really dead," she eked out between sobs.
"I know, I know," he said softly and rubbed her back. After a few more minutes, he suggested. "I think we should go downstairs for Luke."
Luke...she felt so selfish. If she felt this bad, she couldn't imagine what he was feeling. It must be a thousand, zillion times worse.
They found him in the kitchen making tea. He gave her a nod before setting out the things. Mica had so many questions but she waited until they were seated.
"Was it quick?" she asked and he stirred his tea for a much longer period of time than usual. Finally, he set it down and shook his head.
"No, no, it wasn't," Luke admitted. Her heart sank as she realised that she had hoped it was quick; preferably painless.
"She had planned to tell you. You were important to her, but...," Luke continued and hesitated, staring at his cup. Then, he looked up again. "But your mum was sick, too. Mum thought you'd worry unnecessarily on her behalf and that it wouldn't be good for you. Worrying about your mum was bad enough and when we knew...we knew things weren't going well...she thought you might think the same would happen to your mum. She didn't want that either."
It was cancer. Mica felt the tears coming again and Jack squeezed her shoulder.
"In the end, mum didn't tell anyone except me. She never would have wanted anyone to feel sorry for her. She didn't reach average life expectancy but she had a full life. She had me with her. She said she had no regrets and now we just have to...go on, I guess," Luke spoke and he sounded so lost. Luke was sometimes confused with her slang and customs but he always knew everything else. He always knew what to do except now it was plain that he didn't know what to do at all. Mica wondered what she should do.
"Have you made arrangements for the funeral?" Jack asked.
"No, I tried one and they said it would be a week or more. I was hoping for this weekend, I just...want it to be over," Luke admitted. Jack took out his mobile and Luke shook his head. "They said they were booked solid."
"Let him try," Mica spoke and Jack left the room. They drank their tea until he returned.
"How does Saturday at 3 PM sound?" Jack asked, slipping his mobile back into a pocket.
"How?" Luke questioned. Mica smiled and replied, "Because he's Uncle Jack, he gets stuff done no one else can do."
"I try," Jack admitted and sat back down.
"I don't know what I'm doing. I usually know just what to do or I ask...mum but she's not here," Luke said. "I could use the help."
"That's why we're here," Jack said and Mica felt stupid for thinking this had just been about her. Of course, Luke needed their help and Jack had been through this sort of thing before. "We'll just need to get rooms locally."
"Actually, you probably have no idea how lonely it is to be in a large house with just a robot dog and a talking computer," Luke spoke. "I have plenty of rooms. You could stay here."
Mica glanced at Jack even though she wanted to accept without thinking.
"Of course, we will," Jack agreed.

"Gas explosion, I can't believe I'm so happy about a gas explosion that killed twenty people," Gwen said with a sigh after investigating as the Swanson had asked her.
"At least it wasn't terrorists or aliens," Bernie added and she closed her eyes for a moment.
"Oh Bernie, you have no tact at all," Gwen commented.
"Just think of it as my contribution to the team," Bernie quipped.

Rhi walked in on Iefan and Lucia singing to something on the television, probably off Youtube. Lucia sounded nice but she couldn't recall hearing Iefan sing like this before. Rhi could make out words and everything.
"They take after Jack," Alice whispered and Rhi couldn't remember hearing him sing. She would have to get him to sing one of these days. Her expression was obvious.
"You've never heard him, have you?" Alice asked and she shook her head. "We'll have to fix that someday. Thanks for coming."
"No problem, he left yesterday so I thought you might want some help," Rhi said with a shrug.
"Sure, I have to fix dinner," Alice agreed and walked away. As much as she liked hearing them sing, it was very loud and her head was starting to throb from it. Maybe she could get them to watch a nice, quite movie before dinner. She went to use the toilet but when she was half-way there, she realised she'd left her mobile. Leaving a mobile in arm's reach of Iefan was never a good idea so she walked back. However, once she was in earshot, she heard Lucia say, "No, I wanna pick the song. Your aunt wants us to watch a movie."
How did Lucia know that? The only way she could have known that was if...if Lucia was just like Iefan, Mica and David. Could it be? On the other hand, she knew Jack could do it, too.

Mica ate her chocolate cake as she rolled Sarah Jane's lipstick sonic in her other hand.
"You should keep it," Luke spoke and Mica looked up. "The lipstick, she would have wanted you to."
Mica smiled at the responsibility she was given and having a piece of Sarah Jane forever.
"Be careful with it," Jack spoke and she nodded. Then, Luke looked at Jack and asked, "Are you sure you don't want a beer?"
Luke had a bottle he was drinking from.
"Yeah, I'm sure," Jack said although he didn't seem sure to Mica.

David and Emyr arrived at Jack's house on Thursday night.
"Shouldn't we have phoned first?" Emyr asked after David gave him a quick kiss.
"No, it's fine. Besides, mum's already here," David reminded him about the car out front. Then, it started raining which nulled the debate.
"Ciao," said Lucia, answering the door in a Hello Kitty t-shirt.
"Lucia! Only adults should be answering the door!" Alice chastised and waddled quickly to her side. "Iefan's watching The Lion King. Unfortunately, he heard me thinking so he knows the dad dies. I'm so glad Lucia doesn't have that problem."
David looked at Lucia who ran off at that.
"David! Emyr! Come sit down," his mum called from the couch. Then, a mobile rang with some Italian song.
"That's mine," Alice called and took it into the kitchen. Within a minute, she was back.
"Iefan, your taddy wants to speak with you," she said and the toddler jumped off the couch, somehow not hurting himself.
"Taddy!" the boy screamed, clutching Faba and ran to Alice.
"Come into the kitchen," she said and they disappeared. Then, he saw his mum take a piece of candy from the bowl without anyone else seeing him except him.
"Lucia, which hand is the candy in?" she asked and David heard her say, 'Right' in her head. Lucia hesitated and picked the left hand. She'd picked the wrong one on purpose but then he remembered how his mum used to do the same thing with him and Mica. She'd known all this time that he was different.
"Emyr, we have to go," David spoke and headed for the door.
"What if it's still raining?" Emyr asked; confused.
"It's fine," David maintained and left the house. However, Emyr was quickly followed by his mum.
"David, what is it? It's raining, you dumbo," she said with a smile.
"You did that same thing with me and Meesh as kids. You knew all along but didn't tell us-"
"David-" his mum started but he didn't want to do this now.
"No, no...I don't want to hear it. You should have told us," he spat and got into his car. He waited just long enough for Emyr to get inside as Lula barked from the house. It was silent on the way home until the door was shut.
"What just went on there?" Emyr demanded with more anger than David had seen in quite some time.
"Iefan can read minds, or at least he hears your thoughts," David explained and waited to see Emyr's reaction.
"Actually, that may explain a lot...sometimes, it does feel like he knows what I'm thinking," he said, "but what does that have to do with tonight?"
