Magic's Real

Dave hadn't had a home-cooked meal since he'd been able to visit home a few months before. He missed this. Jack and Ianto sat with Sarah Jane between them in her booster seat.

"So, who's the lucky person?" Ianto asked.

"What are you talking about?" Jack asked.

"Jack..." Ianto spoke, drawing out his name. "He's married."

Dave held up his other ring hand.

"Becky, when I came out, she was finishing her last semester and then...," Dave hesitated at telling them the real reason. "She couldn't come with me."
He missed her so much.

"When do you go back?" Ianto asked.

"I get my Master's Degree in December," Dave said.

"And what does the heir of Merlin have to study?" Jack asked.

"A lot, actually," Dave admitted. "But I want to develop alternative energies using Tesla's methods."

"I liked Tesla," Jack said with a grin. The grin and the remark reminded Dave of Balthazar but as far as Dave knew, only Balthazar, Veronica and Horvath had lived for centuries...

"Do you mind ice cream for dessert? I didn't have time to pick anything else up," Ianto explained, "Since I also wasn't planning on company."

"That'd be great," Dave agreed and Sarah Jane cheered before it turned into a coughing fit.

"Poor girl," Jack spoke and rubbed her back.

"Have you set a date yet?" Dave asked.

"You'll have to ask Ianto about that. He's planning everything," Jack told him.

"Yeah, Becky did most of the planning for our's," Dave explained and couldn't help watching the toddler. She hadn't eaten much of the meal but was playing with her remaining silverware. Then, she started coughing again.

"Here you go," Ianto spoke and put the bowl in front of her. Dave noticed she had plain vanilla while the rest of them had something chocolate with pieces in it.

"Can we see some magic?" Ianto asked.

"Magic," Sarah Jane repeated. Dave pushed away his bowl so it wouldn't get too heated and did what he thought was most impressive: a fireball.

"Is something there?" Jack asked.

"I can't see anything," Ianto complained.

"Hot!" Sarah Jane screamed and pointed. Dave noticed that Ianto appeared a little distressed by that. Dave's ice cream was also melting so he forced the molecules back together as though it was cold again.

"That's a neat trick," Ianto spoke.

"The problem is that not everyone can see magic, like Becky can't. You have to be born with the ability," Dave explained.

"It felt almost like a perception filter where I could see something out of the corner of my eye," Jack mused aloud between bites.

"Those exist?" Dave asked because he thought they were still theoretical.

"They will," Jack explained and Ianto shot him a glare. Yep, there was definitely something special about Jack that Dave wasn't supposed to know about.

"Doctor," Sarah Jane said and both men looked around.

"No, I don't think you'll need the doctor," Ianto spoke with a laugh. Jack joined in but it seemed a little odd, too.

"Ianto can drive you back to your room or wherever you need to go," Jack suggested.

"No, you've done enough already. I'm fine, thanks," Dave argued and Ianto shook his head.

"I want to," Ianto insisted and Dave had the impression they were going to talk about something.

It didn't take very long in the car before Ianto asked, "Could she have seen it because she was sick?"

Dave knew he was expected to know everything but he had already decided it was an impossible task.

"I don't know, I suppose it's possible," Dave spoke.

"It's just...it seems dangerous and it's bad enough that...she's probably going to end up in Torchwood like us," Ianto spoke like he was confessing something. "I don't want her in Torchwood. I want her to have a nice safe normal career like business woman or writer like her namesake...but she's too much like her parents."

Dave had to admit that he had spent part of the evening trying to decide which man was the toddler's biological father. She seemed to exhibit physical traits from both which wasn't possible.

"You're lucky that you don't know what it's like to fear for your daughter's life from such a young age," Ianto told him and Dave couldn't help it.

"But I do," he admitted and sighed.

"What?" Ianto asked.

"Becky's pregnant. It's a girl," Dave explained.

"When she's due?" Ianto asked.

"December 13-"

"But that's when you graduate," Ianto interrupted.

"I know! And I'm so worried that I won't be able to be there but it's not like I can blow off any of stuff here either," Dave started to ramble, "and on top of everything, we already know she takes after me which means she'll always be in danger..."

"How do you know already?" Ianto asked.

"I told you how Becky's normal. She can't see magic but ever since the baby, she can. She's even done a couple of things," Dave spoke, remembering.

"And that's all the baby's doing?" Ianto asked.

"Yeah, something about babies and kids having all sorts of unfocused energy...Balthazar tried to explain to me but I was kind of in too much shock to really comprehend it," Dave explained.

"Who's watching over her?" Ianto asked and Dave sighed again. He hated not being there for her.

"Balthazar, he's my Master and his wife," he answered and couldn't wait to call her once he was on the train.

"The heir of Merlin has a Master?" asked Ianto in a teasing way.

"More of a mentor now," Dave admitted and they rode a little in silence.

"I'm going to give you the number for my mobile so you can phone me," Ianto told him and Dave appreciated that. "It's scary enough becoming a dad without everything else."

"Thanks," said Dave and he waited a few more blocks before asking, "Can I ask what the deal is with Jack? He's not a sorcerer or something but he just seems...out of place sometimes."

At first, Dave wasn't sure he was going to get an answer.

"Well, I suppose if we're being honest," Ianto spoke, "Jack was born in the future. He's lived a lot of places in a lot of different times."

This was an interesting development. Ianto pulled over near the train station and Dave checked his watch. He'd be fine.

"You seem to be taking that well," Ianto stated, turning to him.

"In the last twelve hours, I found out not only have we made contact with aliens but we have multiple agencies to deal with them. I'm still processing that so guy from the future is going to take a little longer," Dave spoke and Ianto nodded.

"And I found out magic's real," Ianto said with a chuckle.
