LJ Cuts and Responsibility
Sep. 19th, 2011 10:00 pmNow I've gotten several requests in the last month or so about changing this or that on my journal so I'm going to address this publicly rather than repeating it over and over.
LJ is a community. It's very much a sort of flat/apartment building or maybe even dormitory would be more accurate. We belong to groups with their own bulletin boards (pages) and they have certain rules since it's a public space. I completely understand this and I try to abide by their rules.
On the other hand, my journal is my space. I don't want to come off like a dictator. I'm certainly not going to complain about your space. I want my guests to feel free to suggest things they want in the future. Think of it like I'm inviting all of you over for dinner. I don't mind if you make suggestions about food to serve next time or ways I could accommodate your disability better. I do want you happy as my guest.
However, I don't appreciate when people say I have to move furniture because they think it looks better or that they don't like the photos I have hanging on the walls. Do you want people to say those things to you? It comes off a bit rude.
If my journal bothers you, you can place me on a filter or de-Friend me. I'll be sad but I'll understand why.

Date: 2011-09-20 12:52 pm (UTC)That being said, I just ad-blocked the root of your images, so unless I'm at work (where I haven't done it yet) I never see them. Which is something else you may wish to consider: if you have any interest in *other* people seeing what you post, an lj-cut would also be good. People who want to see the pictures and what you have to say about them will do so; the alternative is to de-Friend you or block every image you put up.

Date: 2011-09-21 07:23 pm (UTC)I think the thing that may bother some people is the fact that when I read your entries, I read them on my flist, not on your journal. And when your pictures extend beyond say... 500px width of my friends list style, it skews my whole page including all the entries above and below it. Now, I'm not moaning, but I can see why people may want to raise it with you just as you. They have a right to raise it, just like you have a right to say no. But if they don't let you know, they don't know whether it is something you are flexible on or not. I get that you want to post what you want to post, and I don't want to defriend you because I like reading your entries. But it seems lots of other people are happy to cut pictures and the LJ cut was invented by LJ for that purpose.
Why not a compromise? Why don't you post thumbnail click links of your images? The LJ scrapbook allows this feature to be inserted into your entries so it isn't complicated. It won't ruin everyone's flist, and the images are still visible, and clickable for those who want to see them giant size? Everyone wins!

Date: 2011-09-23 12:56 am (UTC)No, I definitely want to know about issues but since it has been asked me multiple times, I decided I should address it on the journal itself.

I always thought it was invented for spoilers. It was easier than the text since journals come in different colors.
I guess part of it is that I know I'm lazy when it comes to cuts. If I don't know exactly what's under the cut or what kind of photos I'll find, I'm not going to take the time to click it.

I use Photobucket although you do mention links...I just didn't understand any of what you meant. Are they literal thumbnails so they're tiny and you can't tell what they are? What's this scrapbook thing?
*I have had complaints before about photos so I try to limit them to 3 outside a cut or if it's something special, I'll make sure it's under 1000, preferably under 500 but if it's a photo meme, then I figure...well, that's the point.

Date: 2011-09-24 03:09 pm (UTC)The LJ Scrapbook feature. Everyone with LJ has a scrapbook as part of their account (free, paid, or plus). It works exactly like Photobucket. You upload the photos and it provides you links to insert them into your entries. You can choose the size as well, so you can insert them as full size images, or clickable thumbnails.
Here are the LJ Scrapbook FAQs.
