Day 29 – Where you think the series should continue to.
I think I laid out most of it in my last review of Miracle Day, but most important:
Plot and the Big Bad should NEVER be the same thing. A Big Bad can drive the plot through actions but an author/showrunner should never just assume those actions make for great plot when they amount to us watching them make a sandwich. Instead, they have to be balanced with other occasional plots that have nothing to do with the Big Bad, like in Buffy when Oz turned out to be a werewolf or they went to a Halloween party at a fraternity.
Constantly reminding us that all government and drug companies and people in power are evil is getting old. No, on second thought, it IS old. It was a lot more fun when there was this sense of the other organizations hating Torchwood but grudgingly realizing that Torchwood was best for certain situations.
Stop killing off anyone remotely interesting or empathetic to the audience!
In fact, I recommend watching MI5/Spooks which has gone on forever and been through several casts but is more like Law & Order in that it's very pleasurable to watch despite that unlike ER which totally showed its age toward the end. MI/Spooks can kill off anyone at any time but the plots are so engaging and the newest characters so likable and interesting...that you keep watching anyway. This is what Torchwood needs to do.
They need a Hub and cool stuff again. I miss it. I really do. You can still show them having to Macgyver stuff they need on the fly when situations come up, but it's way more professional to have a base of operations...and if you still have them being fugitives AGAIN, I'm going to scream.
DO NOT EVER KILL RHYS, ANDY OR THE BABY!
Undo what you did to Rex.
Jilly is an opportunist. Make her an actual opportunist where sometimes, it's in her better self interest to help Torchwood. Also, it would be nice to have a backstory or even sort of private information about her...
If you claim a show is international, I expect more than five countries...especially when three of those are still in Great Britain.
Last but not least, I want Jack to meet Eleven and preferably be an actual companion. It'd be good for him.

Date: 2011-10-07 11:11 pm (UTC)The killing off of sympathetic characters. Yes! I'm officially sick of it. I hated losing Owen and Tosh, but it makes sense that in that dangerous of a job it is not believable that they all always live. I honestly didn't care about Ianto one way or the other - sorry, he bored me most of the time. Esther irritated me for half the series, but she had such a wonderful growth arc and became a strong and brave character that we were invested in and it was so good to see that with all of humanity going to the pits that someone could become so much more. - - - Of course that means Rusty has to kill her.
My one suggestion I would add to your list is to "Bring Torchwood back into the Doctor Who universe." The things that have happened in the last 2 series are too epic for none of the DW characters to have noticed. At some point we split universes from DW and SJA and that makes me sad. We need to reunite the family. And I agree - Jack needs to meet Eleven. I really really want a Jack and River scene! Specifically, the one that Moff described on Twitter.

Date: 2011-10-09 12:04 am (UTC)I'm not sure if you read my fanfiction, but my series that still has Ianto will have my version of COE where they definitely team up with Sarah Jane because THAT WOULD BE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN!
ugh
Which scene he described on twitter?

Date: 2011-10-09 12:43 am (UTC)Actually, I'm probably going to have some Jack/River interaction in my Iefan story in the next couple of chapters....

Aye, don't even touch them. Or we'll have a Molly Weasley-Bellatrix moment on our hands...
I don't understand why Rex had to become immortal, too...Can it wear off?
And I was so disappointed that they killed Esther. Grrrrrr.
And I know much this post has basically been all agreeing with little actual additional content, but I just have to say River and Jack were both Moffat's characters...It would be fantastic and brilliant and cool.

Date: 2011-10-18 06:00 pm (UTC)I don't know about Rex except it seemed like Rusty wanting to do something once again to piss off the fans although he probably thinks it's a "brilliant move to shake things up" or whatever.
Yep, I totally hope it wears off.
Years ago, I read this fantastic story where River was Jack's little sister, born after their dad died and Grey was taken so that became my canon until Moffat was like, Nope.
Yes, I'm so impatient about writing River/Jack even though it feels a little weird after the wedding in the last episode...
Unfortunately, I keep finding things that have to happen first like Rhi and Alice bonding without Jack around.
