That ride plays big in my childhood memories (although it's been revamped since I rode it as a kid). My dad is deathly afraid of amusement park rides, and when I was about 8 and at WDW, I asked him if he'd ride the Astro Orbiter with me. As we were looking up at it, he thought I was talking about the People Mover, which was just below it. The People Mover's so tame, he agreed. What a surprise when those elevator doors opened to reveal the Astro Orbiter!
It terrified him, but he was a good sport and rode it anyway. :)
Aww, that's a great story. When I put the links to Your Highway in the Sky, don't be afraid to post something there. We like it.
It was one of my favorite rides when we went when I was six, I loved pretending I was actually fly in one. The rockets were red back then which I think you're referring to... Unfortunately, now, it's a little too rough and spinning for me. We did ride it twice though and it's really lovely at night. You can see something of that in the photo I used.
Do you know if the Big Thunder Mountain in Paris ever re-opened? There was a bad accident the day I visited in April and it was kept so under wraps that I never even heard what happened or when the ride will re-open.
Oh, nothing is kept under wraps at Disney that well...
Here's an article when it happened: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1380639/Disneyland-Paris-injured-Big-Thunder-Mountain-ride.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-1380639/Disneyland-Paris-injured-Big-Thunder-Mountain-ride.html)
and when it reopened: http://www.themeparktourist.com/news/20110523/3906/big-thunder-mountain-rollercoaster-reopens-disneyland-paris-following-accident (http://www.themeparktourist.com/news/20110523/3906/big-thunder-mountain-rollercoaster-reopens-disneyland-paris-following-accident)
Wiki says that they removed that particular element of falling rocks.
That's awesome that you went to DLP! I want to see the dragon underneath the castle.
Thanks!!! The only accounts of the accident I ever found were in the French newspaper, so that was a lot clearer! The worst part was that I had fastpass tickets for that ride... about 30 mins after the accident happened. :/
Unfortunately the castle was being renovated when I went, so I saw no dragon either. :(
Thanks for the links, they were really cool and it was nice to have the perspective of someone who's been to Orlando.
So, their Small World is like way larger than ours? I thought Hidden Temple, too.
Still no Commodore Norrington? At MK, I like to think he's yelling the orders and we just aren't able to see him. They still have Poochie though, right? I didn't spot him on the video.
I always thought our Haunted Mansion was Victorian with all the ornateness and how big it is. I always heard Paris was the best so thanks for recording so much.
I don't think Small World is a lot larger, but then again, the most recent other one I have in my memory is Disneyland in CA, which I remember having just a ton more space in general than the one in Disney World.
There's literally nothing referencing the POTC movies in the Paris ride. The only reference to Jack Sparrow is on a wall near the gift shop, oddly. And yes, the dog is there. Just didn't film that part. :P Oddly, the beginning stages of the ride in CA are the end in Paris... and I don't think those parts even exist in the Orlando one if I remember correctly. I was only there in 2008, my memory shouldn't be this bad!
The Haunted Mansion in Paris is definitely my favorite. I guess Europeans aren't as worried about exposing their children to creepy things, because the ride was genuinely spooky! Where in the other rides you would see the man with shaking knees when you enter the graveyard, here you have a skeleton man in a suit that just leans forward and laughs at you. Pretty cool.
