Picture followed by the quote makes me want to give the vetran a big hug. :) But seriously Rush Limbaugh, I thought people like you were extinct... or were Bond villains... or villains of any movie! I'm waiting for the Disney moment where our hero character comes in and squashes you. ~
You can use the picture of the veteran all you want. He does not represent the majority of the protestors and you know it.
There are a couple of points maybe that I agree with the OWS protestors, but for the most part I dismiss them as jealous, lazy people who have entitlement issues.
Why can't they start their own small businesses of like, window washing or pet-sitting, or become nannies? Seriously.
The interviews I saw with a group of them on the channel 4 news the other night, a lot of them had started their own businesses, but those businesses had dried up and gone bust, because as the economy contracts, there's fewer people with enough disposable income to be able to employ people to wash their windows or look after their pets.
How would starting a small business help to dismantle the giant power differential between the upper and lower class which is at the heart of the protests? This isn't "boo these people have money and I don't!" this is the utter lunacy that the top 1% control 40% of the nation's wealth. If you're not outraged by that, then you somehow buy into the 'bootstraps' notion that all those 1% got there by hard work? And oh, if those protesters would only try harder, they could be successful too~ (Ignoring racial, gender, identity, weath & 'connection' disparities of course.)
Well, because there's that incredibly high failure rate of start-up businesses, not to mention things like window washing? In this economy, not a lot of people will pay for something they can do themselves.
I'm lucky that I'm in Minnesota, where the unemployment rate is only about 7%. I'm fortunately employed and can pay off the student loans I have because college was supposed to assist in finding a better job. I'm paying off those loans with my retail job. (I'm pretty sure a start-up window washing job would not be helping me there.)
And for the record, that is not because I'm lazy or have entitlement issues. Thanks, though.
I think you think too little of yourself and what you accomplished with your company. Not everyone can do that. It's a very valuable skill and you could be a real asset in helping others because most people haven't the foggiest idea how to start a business. I know I don't.
Plus, starting a business requires money; extraneous supplies, flyers, etc. Not everyone even has that kind of cash or someone to borrow it from.
Sure, there are banks but they're pretty picky about who they loan money to these days.
Yes, there's the government but between the forms or the grant proposals...most people are too scared to even try. I have one friend who's had several successful grant proposals in the past but still worries over each new proposal and has everyone possible re-read it.
Nannies aren't like the old days. Now, you have to be certified in CPR at the very least and if you take care of multiple children, then you get considered a daycare and that adds extra regulations.
The fact is that pet-sitting, window washing, etc. are service industry jobs that most people don't consider "essential". You've seen for yourself how when the belt has to be tightened, these are the first expenses to go. Our pest control man has even told us how their business is down because people think they can take care of their own bugs cheaper.
When people keep hearing how most businesses fail, then they think about the worst that could possibly happen and a lot of people don't have parents or relatives that can take them in if they lose too much money from it. It's even worse if they have kids to think about.
However, again, I think it would be great if you were able to help others start their own business. There are just a lot of factors scaring people away from doing that right now.
I've also been informed how AT&T is so desperate for people to use their data plans that they will let people buy refurbished iPhones for just ten bucks. My mom wanted to add how there are also a LOT of students who come when they can in between classes and homework. Thus, they aren't lazy, they're just fighting for a future.
I was at the OWS protest on Saturday, and I can tell you firsthand that Rush Limbaugh is full of shit. Of course, I could've told you that before the protest....
