Between my mom being allergic to Aspartame, my brother being sensitive to it and artificial sweeteners being linked with seizures, I try to avoid them.

Last night, I accidentally had punch with Sucralose. It tasted funny but I thought I had checked the ingredients thoroughly. Within two hours, I was coughing, my nose was running, I was sneezing and I had developed a fever.

I am officially allergic to Sucralose/Splenda.

Have you tried Stevia? from what I understand it's just fiber that has a naturally sweet flavour.

I can't have artificial sweeteners either - migraine causing. I miss diet Coke.

Well, at least you try to avoid them, anyway? Just another reason to continue not seeking it out |D

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. I am extremely sensitive to all artificial sweeteners, but I luckily only get a nauseous headaches when I accidentally consume it. Fever and coughing has got to be awful. It's amazing the unexpected places that stuff shows up, isn't it? Because the universe thinks it's hilarious, my sister has diabetes, so there have been many times when I've bitten into or taken a sip of something that looked tasty, only to get a mouthful of headachey grossness. I wish you luck in avoiding the stuff in future!

Huh. I'd never heard about the seizures thing. I usually use Sweet n' Low in my tea because it dissolves faster than sugar and I'm lazy. :P Haven't had anything crazy happen yet... but on the other hand, my sister was epileptic as a child... One more random thing to be worried about, woo!

Got to hate those sorts of allergies. Makes you obsessively read labels. I can't have artificial sweeteners either. They either make me nauseous or give me headaches.

Then top that off with my intolerance of the food dye red 40. It's in so many things. So I understand the pain of having to check ingredients. I am constantly asking what's in things before I eat or drink them now.

Not sure, I'm not really trying for an alternative. I just hate having to re-read labels so much and I still missed it with the punch.

Well, that's actually the problem.

People with normal allergies like peanuts or milk have them listed under the allergen information. When people are allergic to chemicals, the chemicals can have multiple names and are mixed in with other ingredients in teeny, tiny print. Even things like mouthwash and toothpaste can have artificial sweeteners.

It can be very easy to overlook it like I did with the punch and that can be very dangerous.
