Happy 108th birthday, Dr. Seuss!
I just saw The Lorax. I LOVED it!
I don't usually like Dystopian films but the bright colors and comedy really helped. Also, it was just so...DAMN GOOD. There were so many layers and possible interpretations. There was obvious symbolism like a greedy character wearing green but then, there were less obvious parallels like Joseph Campbell Hero's journey and...
The Lorax himself, is he just a cuddly conscience in orange fur or is he a masculine mother nature or is he another form of Jesus? Not only does the Lorax advocate for making sure the very least of the forest creatures is taken care of but he is also shown ascending and descending from Heaven.
Now, I'm not going to lie. A lot of people are going to HATE this movie. Myself, Stephen Colbert and many others frowned upon the commercialism used by this film. However, that was before I saw the film. The film makes it clear how stupid people trying to sell you things are, including claiming that the Lorax endorsed the "marvelous" product that destroyed all the trees. Obviously, he did not so kids now have their first lesson of how people will say whatever they like in advertising and not necessarily be truthful. It even has the evil corporation giving part of its proceeds to charity! The film also stresses how people don't question complacency, masses are easily swayed and families can be both supportive or damaging to their children but how one person can make a difference.
I found myself thinking: if something can indoctrinate impressionable youth like Santorum claims, I hope it's this film.
Mom hoped people would see a comparison between the main bad guy and Romney since the bad guy wanted money at all cost and hated trees for giving stuff away for free.
Damn those Socialist trees!
Either way, we're rooting for it to be number one at the box office. If you're an environmentalist, this whole film is made up of so MUCH WIN!
Also, be on the lookout for a toy minion from Despicable Me. I loved the little cameo. It reminded me of the old days of Disney where you could look for a toy Beast in the Sultan's toybox.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It's not.
