“What did he say about liking boys?” Jack asked her while dipping a chip in ketchup.

“That he didn’t like them at all, he just liked you,” Mica said without looking at him. Instead, she was dumping her chicken pieces onto the pile of ketchup and chips. A small smile almost came to his lips at Ianto talking about him like that. The little girl picked up her toy and poked the toy sword into the chicken before pushing it through the redness. When she held it up, the chicken had the sauce dripping off of it and a chip stuck to it. She continued to use the toy as a fork by biting a piece off the meat.

“My friend Sian has two mums. It’s cool. Their faces never feel scratchy like daddy’s does sometimes,” the little girl told him, “I don’t like when he tries to kiss me and his face is all scratchy.”
Jack had to laugh.

“Maybe when you’re older, I liked when Ianto was scruffy,” he told her and she gave him a look.

“My uncle’s face was never scratchy,” she tried to correct him and he succeeded in a smile.

“Yes, it was…sometimes. I liked kissing him and it would tickle,” he said because he loved taking advantage of those rare opportunities where Ianto was anything less than impeccable.

“Eww, kissing. I don’t wanna kiss a boy. They’re yucky. They have cooties and smell like my brother,” Mica complained and speared another piece of chicken.

“You don’t have to. You could kiss a girl,” Jack suggested because it was the first thing he thought of. The six year old shook her head.

“Like my best friend? I can’t kiss her, eww,” she declared as he picked up more of his chips. After a few more minutes, he was forced to start eating his sandwich. Mica was dipping her finger in the ketchup and licking it.

“I wish I could be like the guinea pigs. They had all these guns and cool stuff and they got to save the world,” she said with bright brown eyes, “Don’t you think that would be awesome?”
Jack had to laugh again.

“But it would be,” she insisted, “You could do anything you wanted. I could stay up late and eat here every day.”
He laughed harder until a thought struck him and then, he choked for a minute.

“So, let me get this straight; You like these guinea pigs because they have a super secret base with all of these state of the art gadgets and guns they use to save the world?” he asked and she nodded her head more forcefully than one of those bobbling dolls. He tried to laugh, but could only manage a smile. If only she knew…her own uncle did all of that and so much more and he was a real person. Jack put a finger to his upper lip.

“What is it? Why are you smiling like that?” the little girl questioned and he shook his head.

“Ask me again when you’re older,” he told her.

“Tomorrow? Next week? When I’m seven? When I’m eight? When…”

“When you’re older, I can’t tell you when,” the man spoke, cutting her off. She was silent and cleaned the rest of the red sauce off her toy. When he finished the rest of his sandwich, she pulled up legs so she was sitting on them.

“I liked when we were playing spies with mum and dad and that woman,” Mica said, “but I didn’t like when the soldier guys came into my room when I was sleeping.”

She was too young to realize how close she came to being abducted by aliens and killed. This was a good thing though. However, she reminded him of how he used to be. He used to like all of this; when the guns and gadgets were exciting.

“How about we get some ice cream?” he suggested and the girl readily agreed.

“Here she is, in one piece,” Jack said about an hour later, letting go of Mica’s hand so she could run inside.

“I never doubted you, Jack,” Rhi told him with a smile. She was in better spirits than he could ever recall seeing her.

“You look good,” he complimented which made her cheeks redden.

“I’ve been more…appreciative of Johnny lately and with the kids out of the house…he took full advantage of it,” she said with a grin, “Now, we’ll have to be careful or I’ll end up with three of them.”
Her tone was light as though that wouldn’t be so bad despite what she was saying.

“You’re lucky that you don’t have to worry about that,” she joked but he couldn’t laugh with her. It wasn’t so humorous to him.

“Yeah,” he agreed without really meaning it. It was something else he couldn’t tell her. He’d told Ianto once and that had been with the assurance that it would never happen.

“Thanks again for this,” said Rhi, “Did you want to come in for a minute?”
Jack turned down the offer and left for home.

He woke up on the couch in the early morning. With a groan, he saw that the clock shown that it was nearly four in the morning. Then, he ran for the loo as fast as possible where he threw everything up. Beef, potato, chocolate and that piece of cake on the way home did not taste as well on the way up. Jack laid his head on the cool stone and tried to feel better. It must have been the hamburger. Why did he eat it? When he first saw it on the menu, he really wanted it, like he needed it. Then, as soon as he unwrapped it on his tray, he remembered why he hadn't had one in such a long time. An hour passed by near the toilet and he made his way to his mobile.

“Jack, do you realize what hour it is?” asked Rhi, very sleepy and very angry.

“How’s Mica? Is she alright?” he croaked out.

“She’s fine. She’s sleeping. What happened with you? You sound awful,” she spoke and all anger had been replaced with a motherly concern.

“I just spent the last hour on the bathroom floor,” the man complained, “I thought it was the food.”

“Maybe you’re just sick, can you get sick?” the voice on the other end inquired.

“I can’t stay dead, I’m not a god, of course I get sick,” he retorted and she laughed.

“You need anything?” Rhi asked.

“No, thanks” he replied and ended the call. Mica wasn't sick although he'd forgotten she'd had the chicken. Jack had eaten a lot more than usual last night. Could it be from eating too much? Maybe it wasn’t food poisoning or over-eating but something psychological since it was the first hamburger since the cannibals or maybe he just had the flu. He hated having the flu. The only good thing about having the flu last time was Ianto playing nursemaid. He had no idea how many hours he spent dividing his time between lying on the cold floor or on the couch. Sometimes, he’d just make it half way down the stairs and lay there. Then, he heard the front door open.

Why had he given her a key? He thought about making his way back down to the couch, but that would require effort and he didn’t feel like making any. Instead, he double-checked that his fly was buttoned as he lay on the bathroom floor.

“Jack, I’m coming up!” Gwen called and he heard her coming.

“Hello, and how was your morning?” he asked rhetorically. She rolled her brown eyes.

“Rhi called me that you were sick. The good news is that I’ve become an expert lately on coping with throwing up all the time,” she said, holding up a bag, “so, I have bought you things.”
She was almost too gleeful at not being the only vomiting person anymore.

“There are crackers which are wonderful. If you try eating anything today, make sure you eat some of these first. Ginger and peppermint tea, I wasn’t sure which one you’d prefer so I bought you both. The lemon is for cutting into wedges and sucking on it. I have special lollipops, too,” Gwen explained while taking out each item and then she took out a blue thing, “You put this in the freezer because the cold can feel better.”

“Thanks,” he uttered and hated the sound of his voice.

“You need help to the bedroom?” she asked and he thought for a moment. He’d been avoiding the bed. However, it made more sense than going down the stairs. With a nod, she wrapped an arm around his waist and helped him up. Jack flopped on the bed and groaned at the pain in his head; probably, due to not having any food in his body anymore.

“I’m leaving the bag on the nightstand and I’ll be back in three or four hours. Call if you need anything before that,” she said while avoiding touching him any further. He understood. He could still be contagious, whatever this was.

Oops, I left my last comment on the wrong chapter cos I went back to check something. As one of the other readers said, I like that it's getting lighter to read, even though everything is still tinged with sadness.

I really do want it to be reversed by the end of the story so that the lightness overwhelms the sadness and everyone is ready to move on even though it's still a little bit sad.

Yep, but at least he has people looking out for him even if he's a bit too stubborn for his own good.

Thanks!
