You know what's sad?
I felt like Johnny Depp acted more in his five minutes of 21 Jump Street than he has during the last five years.
Yeah...
It was an awesome movie though. I almost couldn't stop laughing. Plus, it had the trailer for The Avengers, woohoo.

Date: 2012-03-22 12:07 am (UTC)Will Johnny Depp be in it?
Then it became:
Johnny Depp's going to be in it!
Even my local movie theatre featured that fact on the slideshow before movies.
I didn't reveal how, when, where, why or who he's playing or basically anything except that at some point during those two hours he appears.
I got flack for this same sentence on Facebook and I was really taken aback. My mom flat out said she didn't understand it because even SHE knew he was in it, mostly due to the slide that's been running for months but still...I really didn't think this was of the same caliber as Darth Vader is actually Luke's father or that James McAvoy dies in Atonement.

Date: 2012-03-24 07:37 pm (UTC)I get that for you it was Johnny Depp's cameo was advertised, but it certainly wasn't obvious for me, or for the friends I saw the movie with. Here in the UK, it was not publicised at all and the cameo was kept very well under wraps. I, or my friends, knew nothing about it, and all of us are on LJ, and within "fandom" and are pretty well clued up when it comes to this stuff.
I guess my point is that just because it is obvious for you, there are people from other areas, or even countries who have not been exposed to the same information. And I don't think it is that unfair to expect basic netiquette when it comes to spoilers. I know the internet is for free expression, but at the same time, it isn't that difficult to put things behind a cut or leave things out for those who haven't seen the movie. Yes, there are different levels of spoilers as you point out, but I think so much of Depp's cameo relies on the fact that it is a surprise. And once that surprise is gone, you can't get that back.
