Men In Black 3

Almost senseless rambling ahead about Men In Black 3, The Avengers and Doctor Who
First of all, I acknowledge that a movie NOT being The Avengers is really not an acceptable criticism against that film. However, I can't help comparing the two when, in the first fifteen minutes, you have a character insulting another character for eating Shawarma. Yes, Shawarma restaurants, you have gone from being Avengers approved to Will Smith basically comparing it with dog shit...you're welcome...
Also, the alien spaceship on its side looked like it would be a prototype for a new shield for Steve.
Okay, back to story, I thought I would really like Jemaine Clement as a villain especially after Gentlemen Broncos and I did think he was good for the part but...
I like when I understand the villain rather than the villain just being evil and having to accept that. Boris was creepy. It was interesting how he moved and his biology and all, but he was really creepy and not cute or that fun. Of course, Men In Black is known for that sort of villain but we now live in a post Pixar/Moffat world where people like to have some grey and understanding with their villains.
There was also a HUGE, GIGANTIC plothole with him...the stupidest escape of all time. WHY would you assume something is all food if you only know it's organic matter even if it looks like a cake? This is a freaking multiple murderer and you just ASSUME all is well?
I couldn't help thinking, That wouldn't happen in a SHIELD prison...
Seriously, you're on the moon and you're not wearing reserve oxygen tanks at all times?
That's like walking into a room with a tank full of aliens with poisonous gas and going, Honey, you think we should bring gas masks? No, you're right, why would we need them?
IDIOTS
When I was watching, I really hated how K was acting towards J but now I kind of wonder whether he knew it was J's time to "go to the Library" so to speak especially since he was so much looser at the end. Yeah, you can't do timey whimey and not have me go there either. It's on my mind more so since Men in Black 3 is all about how to use the moon launch/landing to fend off a large-alien invasion of Earth and...
Oh yeah, Doctor Who JUST did that last year!
At least the Doctor put everything back together when he was done, K and J are pulling out hoses and pipes as they're fighting and I just kept thinking of all the tragedies over some seemingly stupid thing like tiles and they're ripping out random hoses!
Now, being a Floridian, I have another nitpick. This is for Men in Black 3, Doctor Who and any media entity dealing with Cape Canaveral between 1963-1973...
It was NOT called Cape Canaveral! It was Cape Kennedy!
I have Coulson Pheels about this film, too. Tumblr has a graphic suggesting that K is actually Coulson's father. I can see this. I think from a personality and looks standpoint that Canton Everett Delaware III makes more sense but then, he is also gay so that would take some explaining... Of course, now that it has been established that K did spend time in London in the 60s, then Clark Gregg's idea of Emma Peel for Coulson's mom could be more than just a joke.
I have accepted that for the time being, any hero saying "You're going to lose" to the villain will cause me to have a shiver up my spine. In Men in Black 3, this happened TWICE and I got that creepy shiver feeling BOTH times.
I liked killing Zed. It had an interesting dynamic and it was plausible that O was a chief at another bureau of MIB overseas which is why we never saw her before. I still don't understand O and the woman in the first film unless we were lied to and he had some other interest in her...secret love child...
I thought maybe this would be explained by MIB becoming an alternate universe where his major love was O instead of the other lady but then, it was apparent that this was not the case and everything had been pre-destined...
I miss the Ford LTD but then, that's for personal reasons. The car that drove me throughout my childhood and became mine for tax purposes when we had to scrap it was a 1979 Ford LTD. I wish everyone could see one in person. You'd have a whole new understanding of why a secret alien squad would use that car. This station wagon was a freaking TANK! It was solid metal and would basically cream anything in its path. I also missed Frank and wonder about his backstory. He was advertised on the Coney Island billboard as "the pug who speaks!"
I guessed that it was The Factory but then I was annoyed with its portrayal. I love Bill Hader but I felt they were unfair to the real Andy Warhol and those who liked what he did.
So if the protective shield is called ArcNet, does that mean the Master subverted it to his own purposes and renamed it the Archangel Network?
However, I did really like how J's father helps K and J once he finds out J is his son. I think the plotline sort of made it all worth it. It was pleasant. I enjoyed my time. It should have been tighter and funnier. I was shocked at how far into the film it was before I actually laughed. At first, I doubted it was even directed by Barry Sonnenfeld but when he appeared in his usual cameo, I knew it was. I have to admit that I did enjoy Men In Black 2. Most people didn't but I liked the weird, dark comedy that felt more like Sonnenfeld's earlier Addams Family films. If you have not seen these, you MUST. They are awesome and have such a fabulous cast including Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Mercedes McNab, Marc Shaiman, Joan Cusack, David Krumholtz, Peter MacNicol, Christine Baranski, Nathan Lane, Cynthia Nixon, David Hyde Pierce and Tony Shalhoub.

Date: 2012-06-02 07:47 am (UTC)I can value a pure evil villain, but I much prefer shades of grey. I love grey villains like nobody's business.
Time Travel is always hard to do in any movie or show and maintain believability. I mean I know it is only Men in Black, but I am not sure how I feel about them traveling through time.
I would love it if K was Coulson's father.
With certain things, like MIB or Batman or Supernatural, sometimes the car just feels like it is part of the cast at times.
