Last night, we saw Snow White and the Huntsman. Also, I told her about the Green Lantern and she replied, Maybe that's why the movie bombed? People didn't believe the love interest and thought he was repressing his true nature?

Either way, I now renounce my usual reboot rules and want a reboot movie where he's gay.

Also, we were disappointed at getting Dark Knight Rising trailer. I know that's a weird sentence. Obviously, we will be seeing the film. It has Christian Bale and an awesome cast BUT we didn't like the last one that well and this seems even darker. My mom is very concerned that they might do something like kill him off. I'm sure DC must be kicking themselves that they're losing Christian Bale when it's now clear that they should have been working up to a Justice League movie all along...

Because a Justice League movie without Christian Bale is like an Avengers movie without Robert Downey, Jr which I know will happen in the next 7-10 years but LALALALALALALALA, I'm NOT listening!

However, the main disappointment is that I wanted her to see the Bourne Legacy trailer the way it's meant to be seen and they had Batman instead. :(
So, I had to just show her the trailer on the computer. Mom and I have been fans of Renner for a couple of years now ever since The Hurt Locker.
"WOAH"

That Rachel Weisz is a lucky, lucky woman...make out with people like Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston during the day, come home to James Bond...
I know, she worked hard to get here and she's a great sctress but still...wow

Anyway, onto Snow White and the Huntsman

Can I say how I was basically in love with this movie as soon as the narrator told us that everyone loved her for her spirit as much as her looks?

I could have been shown that a little more but I liked that idea. Usually, Snow White has to mature and grow into a defiant spirit if at all. Snow White on Once Upon a Time was the closest to that idea that I could think of before now and even then...

I admit that it did develop problems. It was less than perfect but I still really liked it and about halfway through, I wanted a book, possibly a series all about the kingdom and its inhabitants.

Attention all fictional characters, for the most part, when people are locked up in a heavily armed carriage/prison, etc...there's a REASON!

No, you go ahead and let her come with you. I'm sure no horrible results will occur, like...yep, she totally just killed you. Whoops.

Did anyone wonder whether the mirror was actually magic or it was all in her head? Because she was crazy. When you're watching the film and going, "No, Don't trust her! She's crazier than Loki!", then you know that person is freaking crazy. Bag of cats does not even begin to describe it. However, that's not to say that we didn't get backstory on her or insight into her motivations. The poor thing was brainwashed into thinking that her looks were the only thing she could offer, that could save her from poverty and death. It's like the Reba McEntire song "Fancy" only with fantasy and a grandmother forcing a spell upon her. Oh yes, Ravenna didn't choose to be this way. Someone else chose for her and eventually, she made herself believe it was for the best, that she deserved it.

Actually, one of the reasons, other than Chris Hemsworth, that my mom wanted to see it was that it was one of the first times she could remember the queen actually being beautiful. Usually, that "mirror, mirror" line is so one-sided that it borders on hilarious. This, and OUAT, makes more sense. Yes, Regina is quite pretty.

I admit that as soon as Snow White was now played by Kristen Stewart, I did get a little antsy.
"Awesome, now where's the Huntsman? Bring on Thor!"

However, there were still things on the way there that were interesting. Snow White recited the Lord's Prayer aloud.
Yes.
Now, with King Arthur, there are tons of stories from different time frames that trace the tales starting off as Pagan and becoming more and more influenced/rewritten by Christianity. With what I've read of Grimm...not so much. The classic fairy tales were generally left alone and additional fairy tales with Christian elements were added so I was very intrigued at the thought of a Christian Snow White. Then, with the exception of the Christian symbolism of the trinity and the Aslan Deer, it was basically ignored after that...
Like with Cabin in the Woods, I often felt like there was symbolism all over the place that I sometimes got and sometimes not. It was also tricky trying to decide what was from the original tales, what was from The Hero's Journey and what was from the stuff based off the original tales, like Middle Earth and Narnia...

I can't tell you how amused I was by Snow White's escape/rebirth involving the sewer system, hehe. Also, when she reached the forest and they decided not to follow her, I had the scene from The Lion King in my head. "And if you ever come back, we'll kill you!"

But unlike Scar and the hyenas, they're more honest here about not getting her...Enter the Huntsman!
Yay, drinking! It's always amusing to watch Chris Hemsworth drinking. Naturally, I was a bit worried about typecasting at this point but my fears were soon alleviated. This time, he drinks to forget and numb the pain of not being there to protect his wife who was taken away and fed to the queen. I assumed this from the start but still really enjoyed the scene between Huntsman and evil, creepy brother later. Do you think creepy brother raped the women he bought to the queen? I think it's a definite possibility...

Yes, I know the Huntsman is actually named Eric but I have a lot of feelings about that name, obviously, so I will continue with Huntsman.

Sadly, as soon as Huntsman appeared, I immediately wanted DWARVES! GIVE ME DWARVES ESPECIALLY BOB HOSKINS!

But that was a good twenty minutes or more off...
On CBS Sunday Morning, they described this film as overlong and it kind of is. My mom said she could do without "all the fighting, that stuff in the woods and some of the stuff with the queen."

Sometimes, it came off more like an old fashioned Hallmark miniseries like 10th Kingdom or Merlin.

I loved the Troll. I felt it was very inspired by del Toro. I almost expected some sort of credit.

Some time later...YAY DWARVES! Although Ian McShane and Toby Jones were a little distracting. You would think with the size and all that I would associate Jones with Dobby but nope...I kept thinking of him as Red Skull's minion and McShane as Blackbeard the Dwarf. Philip the Missionary from On Stranger Tides is the Duke's son, the childhood playmate of Snow White and the equivalent of her "prince". I liked Sam Claflin at first as the missionary but as time went on...it should have been better. Then, I see him in stuff like this and I wonder whose fault it was that he came off so bland in Pirates. Here he's shooting arrows, he's clanging swords and he looks pretty darn attractive. I still wanted Snow White with the Huntsman but at least, it didn't seem so one-sided.

Also, one of the Dwarves was all red-headed and played by Brian Gleeson and I'm like, He's related, isn't he?
Yep, Brendan Gleeson's son.

Oh gosh, the Fairy forest! THE FAIRY FOREST!
It was like Pokemon combined with Miyazaki combined with del Toro and it was AWESOME!!!!!
I could have watched that for hours. There was a moss snake and a moss turtle and butterflies that made flowers and just...ugh, wonderful.

This also bought up a very big point to me...
WHY ISN'T THERE A LIVE-ACTION POKEMON MOVIE????????????????????

Come on, being able to see them as actually REAL? How could that not be one of the most awesome things EVER?

Mom hated the fairies themselves, hehe. She also didn't like how del Toro did them. She's very specific about her fairies. They should always resemble Tinker Bell or her friends.

Then, Snow White goes off on this quest to meet someone with the Dwarves and Huntsman following her and I'm like, Aslan?

It's not, but it totally is, just being in a silent large white deer form...and with more symbolism following...

I LOVED how they did the apple scene! It made so much more sense than a peddler or any of the other ways. Also, the Huntsman got to be even more angsty. This time with CRYING! YAY!

TRUE LOVE'S KISS! I loved it! It was a bit like Enchanted but they got to milk it better here so I actually liked this version better.

By then, the whole showdown was kind of an afterthought with me...oh yeah, we still have to defeat her...

When she bought up Magnus, I was actually confused for a second.
No, Tom's not in this and he's not even in the new Wallander episodes...oh, that was the name of the king...oops.

The relationships were resolved in a way where everyone was happy and it's nice that the focus was that she was reclaiming her kingdom and not who she ended up married to. On the other hand, my mom was worried that she'd be like Elizabeth and just keep a guy on the side...

I wonder if there is fanfic already...I foresee a lot of threesome fics.

Hope you don't mind my not commenting on Snow White and the Huntsman; haven't seen it yet and I don't want to be spoiled. ;)

Great line from your mom! (I saw that Green Lantern joke a lot yesterday.) I still haven't seen that movie, and from what I understand I'm not missing much. I'd love to see a movie about the rebooted Alan Scott.

My mom and I finally saw The Hurt Locker a few weeks ago, and she now likes Renner as much as I do. :)

Rachel Weisz, that bitch! She gets to make out with Hawkeye and sleep with James Bond??? Hate her! LOL

I'm looking forward to Dark Knight Rises, and I'll be sad to see Christian Bale leave the role. I with you that there won't be a Justice League movie anytime soon; unlike Marvel, DC can never get their shit together when it comes to the single hero movies. They're rebooting Superman again, Green Lantern didn't come off well, Bale might be done as Batman, and there's yet to be movies of Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Arrow. If they can't get cracking on the single films, how can they be able to pull off a Justice League film? Frankly, they do a lot better with the direct-to-DVD animated movies.

You use that icon and you can comment wherever you want...

Yay! The Hurt Locker was one of those few times where the film I was rooting for did win Best Picture at the Oscars. Have you seen The Unusuals? I saw a few episodes when it was on but I had DVR scheduling problems and missed most of them. Then, they canceled it.

DC does do the animated stuff well. The Wonder Woman pilot looked awful and just made me wish the Joss Whedon film had happened....

So, have you seen it yet?

*giggles* ;)

Sadly, I didn't get a chance to see it this weekend. I might see Prometheus before I see SWATH.

I heard of The Unusuals, but didn't get a chance to see it.

I'd heard about the Wonder Woman pilot disaster. I really hoped David E. Kelley could pull it off. I haven't heard any more about that Hulk series.

Hehe, I have a feeling I'm going to be the weird one. I want to see Madagascar 3...

They have a lot of scenes on Tumblr and Youtube and I totally tempted to buy it when I have the money...

Oh, I know, the series are being really frustrating now because I also was looking forward to Alias although the name will be different, obviously, and I haven't heard ANYTHING. Although the Hulk tv series is going to have some tall shoes to fill now that everyone's fallen in love with Mark Ruffalo...

I know! Now I only want a Hulk TV series if Ruffalo is in it! He's a tough act to follow! ;)

I thought I might see it because of Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Noomi Rapace but now I think I'm chickening out with it...

I still plan to see the Abraham Lincoln Vampire movie though: Dominic Cooper and Alan Tudyk, plus, directed by the same guy who did 9 and Wanted.

Apparently, it's sort of the prequel to Alien, which I liked, so maybe it won't be too bad. I just don't like gore for the sake of gore, you know? If it's not really relevant to the plot there's no reason to have it other than shock value.

I saw a trailer for the Lincoln movie tonite and I'm intrigued...

I've never actually seen any of the Alien films...

My best friend loved the book. I'm tempted to read it but I want to see the movie first so I don't get all nitpicky.

I just can't with Kristen Stewart so I'll be skipping SWATH, despite loving Chris and Charlize. I just look at Kristen and get annoyed because she's so closely associated with Twilight in my head, which i despise. I'll get over it once the Twilight movies are over or she acts well enough to make me forget Bella Swan...which will be hard since I won't watch anything she's in.

*shrugs*

Also, the Snow White story generally bores me so anything with Snow White in the title has me heading the other direction.

Saw Snow White and The Huntsman. I wish I would have gone with the grand-girls to see Mirror/Mirror.
But it was a good looking film.

I did not see Mirror, Mirror. The trailer was just so...
The Snow White felt off...my mom flat out said she wasn't that pretty. Julia Roberts was the stepmother and seemed back to her early pretty Woman style of acting which I never cared for. I also felt she was too...over the top? for the stepmother.

There was Nathan Lane who I love but they show him being turned into a roach, eww...so I guess he got cast into the typical minion role...

However, what annoyed me the most was the prince as dog jokes that were basically stolen from 10th Kingdom...which is a lovely, lovely miniseries if you can get a hold of it.

I just about hated Kristen Stewart until I saw The Runaways which is totally underrated as a film.

So, what about Snow White bores you?

I admit falling asleep during the Disney one because she's so meek and passive but the actual idea of Snow White...this girl having to fight for her life against an evil stepmother who can use magic to look like anyone...I find it interesting. It doesn't seem that far removed from a comic book plot.

All I know is the Disney version tbh and Snow White was so lame in that. I've just given it the side eye ever since.

I have a lot of feeeeelings about The Dark Knight Rises. I'm a massive fan of Nolan's verse. I think Christian Bale is on board wherever Nolan is concerned, but Nolan has stated for a long time now that his set of movies would only be three. If DC or whoever want Bale for the Justice League, then that is up to him, although I am unaware if it has ever got that stage as yet. Besides, we need to see how Nolan deals with Batman in his verse first. There are lots of rumours. Besides, as we know, comic book movies are always happy to reboot/recast to suit their needs (see Spiderman!). But as far as I'm aware, Nolan + Bale go together, and Bale's contract is probably only as long as Nolan's. I think his involvement in the films is because of Nolan rather than because of Batman.

I'm glad you enjoyed Snow White and the Huntsman. The movie was definitely pushing towards Snow White/Huntsman which I liked, but I also liked that, as you said, the point of the movie wasn't who she ended up with, but getting her kingdom back which was great. I have to admit, my mind totally went to Aslan/Christian allegory land during parts, but it didn't detract for me.

Um, wrong Green Lantern, otherwise that would work. The gay Green Lantern is the original, Alan Scott, not the movie's Hal Jordan.

Did anyone wonder whether the mirror was actually magic or it was all in her head? Because she was crazy.

It was in her head. Remember the scene where the brother is spying on her and she's just standing there, talking to herself? Yeah...

Date: 2012-06-05 10:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ericadawn16.livejournal.com
Well, that would be the normal interpretation I suppose but when have I ever done that...?

You see, that was from her brother's point of view and he says over and over how it's "her" magic. He doesn't have any magic of his own so I wasn't sure he could even see all forms of magic or if the mirror could only be visible to one person...

I just figured...magic is complicated.

I suppose the filmmakers did want us to think totally crazy though.

That's a good point, but other people can see her magic. When William and the Huntsman confront her in the wood, they can see her transform into the birds. I'm still going with 'stark raving bonkers'. :)

I would totally take a reboot where the Green Lantern was gay, provided they actually made a good movie this time around.

I've seen many people do Batman so seeing Christian Bale not as Batman would not be that jarring to me. I mean he does an awesome version of it, but he is not the sole one. I've only seen Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and he does it so perfectly that I'm pretty sure he will always be Iron Man in my mind.

Heh, but all people in prison are just put there by mistake. They totally didn't do anything, they said it themselves. :P

Your review really makes me want to go see Snow White and the Huntsman, despite the fact that I am leery of Kristen Stewart's acting.

Dude a live-action Pokemon movie would make my childhood come alive. That would be awesome!
