Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Jun. 26th, 2012 03:04 pmI keep wanting to put slayer...hehe.
So, I was looking forward to this: Howard Stark, Ramona, Wash, Celeborn, the other guy from The Hurt Locker and that bad guy from every other film ever made whenever Christopher Lee and Mark Strong aren't available...
Plus, the interviews claimed that Mary Todd would also be ass-kicking...
Unfortunately, they did lie about that but I did enjoy the film very much. Of course, hot vampires are a kind of weakness. There's a local commercial, in existence somewhere, for Queen of the Damned that proves this. It basically consists of clips from Queen of the Damned while I say things like, "Stuart Townsend is HOT!"
Mega spoilers, I spare no expense
I admit that as much as I usually love Timur Bekmambetov and it seemed interesting, my main draw was Dominic Cooper as a vampire with the ass-kicking. This area did not disappoint. He was awesome and hot. I wish we could have a film where Howard Stark joins the Howling Commandos. Also, when we know more about him, I'd like fanfic with Henry and whoever Tom Hiddleston plays in Only Lovers Left Alive being all vampiric bros together.
It's an awesome bromance between Henry and Abraham Lincoln although I couldn't help wanting more. I mean, you've already made him into a vampire hunter and historians spend hours debating Abraham's sexuality as it is...why not go all the way and at least have a kiss? There wasn't an ass shot either. Really, do you know your audience at all? I suppose they think The Avengers made a billion dollars on the story alone...
There was some interesting vampire stuff going on. Vampires were not staked. They were killed by silver or beheading. They could have lots of sex. They could go out in sunlight, resulting in having to wear awesome period sunglasses. They could also be invisible.
Now, they do set up that vampires can't hurt other vampires but then Henry could? I wondered if it wasn't a physical block like Spike's V Chip but a mental one that could be overcome?
Can we have Anthony Mackie in a Marvel film? Please?
I also liked how they didn't spoon feed the audience history. You either knew it and were able to appreciate the significance or didn't and it was your loss. For example, we meet Willie Lincoln. It is fairly common knowledge that Willie died while Lincoln was in office so I'm already trying to figure it out. Is it vampires? Please let him be killed by a vampire.
Alan Tudyk was Stephen Douglas which amused me to no end. The only things that kind of rubbed me the wrong way were Jefferson Davis consorting with vampires and the elimination of Willie's brothers. When I told my mom about the Jefferson Davis scene, she said that she was glad she hadn't went because "they would have lost me right there."
I loved just seeing everything though especially the cannon fire on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. Usually, this kind of thing is done on a low budget so it's nice but it doesn't feel real. There's no "And you are there" quality. This had that. I was reminded of Alexander. Now, I admit that Alexander was boring and basically panned worldwide BUT I LOVED the visuals. We were studying Ancient World History at the time and to actually SEE the things you read about as though you were back in those times...it's priceless.
I definitely need to get Linkin Park's new album, is it out? The song was awesome.
Also, the beginning scene makes no sense. Someone delivers to the notebook to Henry but Abe already gave it to Henry? Wouldn't that be like someone delivering the Invisibility Cloak to Albus that he's already borrowed? Also, it ruins the suspense of Henry being a vampire from those going in cold. Yes, I'm sure some of those exist. I didn't know his character was a vampire until the free HBO preview weekend Making Of.

Date: 2012-06-29 02:52 am (UTC)As such, I was kind of put off from reading the book but then, my best friend read it and loved it. However, I wanted to see the film first so I wouldn't go into it nitpicking more than necessary since I would already be ripping it apart for the historical inaccuracies.
The Queen Victoria thing sounds interesting. I can't help thinking of the Doctor Who episode...
