While I love Avenue Q and The Lion King, I have to say that my favorite musical is Into the Woods.

When I was 8, PBS showed it and I still remember watching it. I loved it; not just the songs but the idea that all the fairy tale characters knew each other. I didn't know the term back then but crossovers were my favorite way of playing. Barbie would go out with Rio while Jem and My Little Ponies would save the Moon Dreamers who had been imprisoned along with the TINY My Little Ponies. Sometimes, they would be back in time or in an alternate universe.

Still, Into the Woods is awesome and I re-learned this in 2005 when I saw my alma mater perform it. Here's the thing about plays and musicals...sometimes, they really are awesome and sometimes...it was actually that cast, crew and director that saved it. The best test for a play or musical is whether a high school or university that isn't known for its productions can still make an amazing performance from it. The actress was nowhere to Bernadette Peters' caliber and the sets were scaled down but I was still utterly enthralled by the story and songs.

They're making a movie. I know, I know, they always seem to be contemplating a movie but this time is different. This time, it's Disney and you know Disney is wanting to capitalize on the renewed interest in fairy tales and its own Once Upon a Time.

I know, I just said how Into the Woods is almost fail-proof but it's being directed by Rob Marshall. On one hand, Chicago was done very well and I loved Memoirs of a Geisha...
On the other hand, I'm now leery of almost anyone associated with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides...
Nine was also underwhelming in the long run.

I like the rumor of James Corden for the Baker, Christine Baranski, Cheyenne Jackson, Patrick Wilson and Allison Janney but Meryl Streep as the Witch?

No, DO NOT WANT!

P.S.

Dear Hallmark,

You are an idiot for not re-releasing 10th Kingdom and coming up with a new book, if not a flat-out sequel. Did you not notice the exorbitant prices on Amazon for copies?
I'm so glad I upgraded to DVD when I bought Alice years ago.
