A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket

Photobucket

I love the whole series: the wordplay, the tone and that even though they are "children's books", every single one had something new to learn. One of my favorite parts is catching all the literary references, often punny, like in The Reptile Room where there's a Virginia Wolfsnake...hehe. Another big plus would be Brett Helquist's illustrations, as you can see, they're awesome.

Also, you no longer have any excuse not to try the series because they've posted the entire first book online!!!

Here's some teasers from it:

"But one type of book that practically no one likes to read is a book about the law. Books about the law are notorious for being very long, very dull, and very difficult to read. This is one reason many lawyers make heaps of money. The money is an incentive - the word "incentive" here means "an offered reward to persuade you to do something you don't want to do - to read long, dull, and difficult books."
— Lemony Snicket

"Sometimes, just saying that you hate something, and having someone agree with you, can make you feel better about a terrible situation."
— Lemony Snicket

"The book was long, and difficult to read, and Klaus became more and more tired as the night wore on. Occasionally his eyes would close. He found himself reading the same sentence over and over. He found himself reading the same sentence over and over. He found himself reading the same sentence over and over."
— Lemony Snicket (The Bad Beginning)

I need to read this series. I enjoyed the movie. But I couldn't read a book online. I either need a physical book or I'd download the file onto my iPod and read it there (I'm currently reading Richard Castle's 'Heat Wave')

There seem to be plenty of physical copies, like here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bad-Beginning-Unfortunate-Events/dp/0064407667/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258349938&sr=1-2)

I'd look up digital copies but I'm not sure which App you use. I was actually really happy with the film. While it added and mixed things around, the tone was very much in spirit with the books.

I have various sources to look for these things, so I'll see what I can dig up myself.

I really liked the tone as well. Kind of dark and gothic but somehow comedic as well.

Another book series I still need to finish. They seem terribly sad, but they're amazingly optimistic and slightly wink, wink, about the whole situation. :D
