So, I ended up seeing Skyfall twice, my brother three times...four if MOSI hadn't replaced it on the Imax Dome with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and my mom just saw it once..."that was enough".
I liked it. There was a lot more going on than most of the Bonds. We get a lot more insight into his psyche. One big advantage with seeing it more than once is that "Skyfall" by Adele makes more and more sense. I do love this song and will root for it to win the awards BUT I feel Neil Finn's "Song of the Lonely Mountain" is better and I don't understand the lack of nominations.
Oh, Rory Kinnear, THAT was you! In the trailers, they kept showing a suited man that kept reminding me of Coulson. The first time I saw the film, I spent the whole time worrying that he would be killed off. The second time I spent the film wondering how it would work in fanfiction to remove his character and have Coulson undercover...and yes, the way M was described especially about using people and losing lost souls...definitely saw a comparison with Nick Fury. Then again...the movie kind of asks for comparisons with The Avengers considering that one scene which I'll describe below in a cut...
One of my favorite parts of Bond films are when they act almost like a travel brochure, advertising different far flung locales. I loved the lightplay in Shanghai and I actually recognized the Japanese island from a segment on CBS Sunday Morning about a year ago!
You know, I remember a lot of people making fun of Naomie Harris' accent in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End but you can hear how close she is to someone Jamaican just by her actual accent...turns out to be her mother. I loved her here and I'm glad she's getting good roles. I hated all the criticism she received back then; same with Zoe Saldena.
Hehe, did anyone else think Rancor pit from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in the casino?
When Silva hits on Bond and says, "There's always a first time..." and Bond replies, "What makes you think this is my first time?", I was so happy and then I was struck by the thought...in our lifetimes, we could very well get a Bisexual and/or gay James Bond. It's an awesome time. Obviously, it's the villain fondling James Bond which has negative connotations but still...I never heard any complaints over it.
Q was as adorable as expected and if you're just discovering him for the first time, I really recommend Bright Star, Brideshead Revisited and what I was able to see of Richard II. Great Performances NEEDS to schedule "Hollow Crown/Divine Right" dammit! The Hour was a little slow for me and I was finally able to record The Tempest off Showtime.
Okay, Spoilers Time
Am I the only one who didn't understand what happened on the bridge? Bond is shot earlier in the backhoe...best use of construction equipment since Ianto Jones used one...but you make us think that Eve shot him so he fell but the only bullet wound I saw was the one he got previously from the bad guy...
You seriously put a madman in a glass cage where he seems quite happy and did NOT expect that to go horribly wrong? That he had a plan of infiltration and/or just fucking you up? Yeah, I'd already seen Loki do it more than ten times so I was expecting it to go horribly wrong...
All of the Daniel Craig James Bond films have been clearly influenced by the Jason Bourne films and I've kind of liked that but this one did have more of a feeling of...we took a bunch of ideas that we liked in other films and put them here. I'm sure some very casual viewers saw this film and thought, Oh, Bond is like Batman! Especially when you have Bond and his manservant being present as his ancestral mansion is blown up...
And the having to walk out on the ice...
However, I did love the reference to previous Bond films especially his officially being Scottish and the car. I was so sad when they shot that up.
Albert Finney looks so much better here than in the Bourne films. I really liked his part despite the Alfred similarities.
I'm working on not associating Ralph Fiennes with Voldemort...really. I was even able to forget most of the time. My mom and brother had no problems. I suppose my problem is that I used to have a crush on Ralph Fiennes which is why I went to The Avengers in the theatre in 1998. He does make a good M. I'm disappointed that it's back to having a male in charge again but he'll be good and I hope everyone else can come back, like Jeffrey Wright...I kept wondering what his character was up to...
Yes, the female who keeps arguing with Ralph Fiennes and everyone is Narcissa Malfoy, hehe.
IMDB got me all excited about James Bond's passport in the film. They said his birthdate was listed as December 16 and both times, I never saw it.

Date: 2013-01-19 04:13 am (UTC)Ha, yes, I did.
When Silva hits on Bond and says, "There's always a first time..." and Bond replies, "What makes you think this is my first time?",
I loved that scene. As you said, negative connotations, but I liked it. I presume there's been a fanfic explosion related to that scene.
Am I the only one who didn't understand what happened on the bridge?
No. Granted, it was my first Bond film and I only watched it once (wish I'd gone back last night, now--ah, well), but from what I recall it looked like she got him in the upper body, yet I never noticed the wound and I don't recall any discussion of where she hit him.
I did know before I watched the movie that Bond had a (nifty and gadget-ridden) car in the past, so I was definitely sad when it got blown up. But then, that whole sequence seemed to be about blowing up as much as possible!

Date: 2013-01-19 02:49 pm (UTC)HAHA I associate Ralph Fiennes with the English Patient where he was hot and not Voldemort, so my problem is that he's aging a bit. Yet...
Well, Bond is getting older and he's still pretty gorgeous, in my opinion. Also, bi!

Date: 2013-01-19 05:02 pm (UTC)As someone who's seen all the films, my heart hurt when the Aston Martin got blown up. It was a beautiful car, and it will be missed. :(
Judi Dench was gorgeous throughout, and I thought her M had a beautiful send-off. (She should've gotten nominated!) I'm also a tad disappointed that they're going back to a male M (and I had that figured about three quarters through the film), but Ralph Fiennes is a great choice. I've no problem seeing him as someone else like I used to; it did take me a while to get over him in Schindler's List.
I did get a kick out of the Bond/Silva scene, and I'm giddy at the thought that this Bond might be bi (even if he only sleeps with men for the purpose of espionage). I swear I could hear gay men screaming and ovaries exploding at that moment. *heh* It definitely shows how the times have changed in 50 years.
I ADORE this Q, and I hope he'll be around for a while. I had no idea (and have found out since then) that a new slash fic (Bond/Q) industry had begun at the moment of their first meeting. I've only read a few, since Bond is one of the fandoms I've never slashed. I can totally see why the pairing is already so popular, though. And is it just me, or is this Q very Doctor-like?
Tip for you: I don't know if you've read much Bond/Avengers crossover fic yet, but a good starting point would to go to Ao3 and type in a search for "james bond/avengers". ;)

My understanding is that she shot him elsewhere but he recovered. There was a line when Bond first runs into Eve at the new MI-6 building where he is teasing her about her shooting and he said she only got "non-vital organs". Therefore I assumed he got hit in the lower body, but I don't think the film really says much that is explicit.
As for Bond's passport, I posted a pic on my tumblr with some behind the scenes photos including a close up of it! Here are the pics.
As for Q, I am a huge fan of Ben Whishaw - have been since he did the film Perfume years and years ago. I'm really excited to see him in bigger roles such as Q and obviously Cloud Atlas. He had a very good 2012 what with both of those films and also Richard II and the second series of The Hour. I'm actually going to see him in a play in May :D (alongside Judi Dench, funnily enough!)
