I do not watch game of thrones.

Yes, I have tried repeatedly because i do love Peter Dinklage, Thomas Sangster, etc. There's too much sex/nakedness and assholery, not enough dragons and women being awesome.

So please do not assume everyone online watches or if we don't that we simply need to start. I know the world can suck. I watch the actual news and it tells me this. I don't need to watch it in fictionalized form.

I was raised on PBS/BBC, sex should be done from a story standpoint and not just done randomly to appeal to teenage boys. I hardly watch any of the pay cable tv shows anymore because they all seem to have lots of sex just because they can and not because it furthers characters/plot.

They need to stop being like newer Anne Rice.

Do you read the books, though? While I will probably never watch the TV show for the reasons you mentioned, I am working my way through the books.

Edit: Oops, this was supposed to be a comment to the post, not to you! Sorry about that!

Me too! I'm so tired of my non-nerd family assuming I must be into Game of Thrones. And, you know, if they're gonna have gratuitous sex on television, there needs to be more men going down on women. So bored of the "let's make it edgy by adding a blowjob" mindset of cable.

Uh then watch season three. Their handling of Ygritte was FLAWLESS.

You could just say: "I don't watch it. I tried, but didn't like it." Instead of making people that do like feel like assholes for enjoying it.

I don't watch it but my gf likes it. I may watch it sometime in the future but for now have no interest in it. I agree with your comment though: sex that is gratuitous just because it can be shown fully on a cable channel does not make its story more interesting.

I understand not liking scenes of explicit sex and violence, but aside from some admittedly gratuitous sex scenes, I think the explicitness does suit the world-building in Game of Thrones because sex and violence motivate a lot of the characters. I disagree about not enough women being awesome as well.

Yeah... the books are pretty violent, and many of the characters being crude and vulgar, so I don't have any issues with that. The sex, well, it's HBO being HBO, unfortunately. I don't know if I disagree with not enough women being awesome, although I guess it depends on your definition of awesome. Cat, Melisandre, Cersei, Margary and her badass granny, Brienne, Dany, Ygritte, Osha ... even the ones who aren't major players, who don't have power, are LOOKING for power. And the ones who are pretty much at the mercy of other players right now - Ayra, Sansa, Shae, Gilly - are still spunky in their own way. Well... Sansa's working on it, I guess ;)

And honestly, how many shows even *have* that many primary or secondary female characters (yes I know GOT has a crazy-big cast, but even percentage-wise it has to be pretty good by comparison).

I haven't seen it either. It's on my to-watch/to-read list, but it's very low. Eventually I will do, but it's not a priority. Thankfully, no one assumes that I watch it either because the majority of my friends/family don't.

Really not sure this post reads the way you intend it.

To me it sounds like 'Since I don't like this show, people on my flist shouldn't be liking it or talking about it either.'

I don't watch or care to watch GOT either, but people have a right to talk about what they want in their own journals and the rest of us are perfectly capable and have every right to skip it and just scroll on to the next post.

So please do not assume everyone online watches or if we don't that we simply need to start.

The same could be said about the Avengers. I couldn't care less about that franchise and have had to just grit my teeth and scroll through quite a few posts on that subject.

This. I don't care what people on my flist like or don't like. I do care if they're judging me for not agreeing with them 100% on their likes/dislikes as if they're the only people in the world whose opinions count and insulting anyone/everyone else.

Also? There are plenty of women being awesome in the show, but if you don't watch it, you don't get to judge.

Aw, that's not news I wanted to hear, because I've heard nothing but good things about Game of Thrones. But if they're going to go that Hoetime (what I call Showtime) route than no thank you.

Fair enough :]. *Shrugs* I personally watch it and like it, despite all the violence and sex, which, as someone else said, actually does serve a purpose. In GOT-verse (the TV show version, anyway), all the men/males but Tyrion, Jon, & a few others use either violence or whatever amount of power they have to get ahead, so to speak. All the women/females save Dany, Catelyn Stark, Brienne, and a few others use their bodies/sex/charm to do the same thing. It doesn't shed the best light on either gender, granted (which may be exactly the point--- insatiable hunger for power and the pursuit of it makes every person, whether they're a man or woman, look bad), but set in a time period like the Middle Ages, it makes perfect sense.

I definitely disagree with you that there aren't enough strong female characters in the series, too. There are several of them, if you include the "evil" ones, e.g. Cersei and Melisandre (both of whom, IMO, absolutely need to go, for the reason I said above). But even if you leave those particular individuals out, there are still quite a few of them. *Nods*

But again, each to their own, as the saying goes :). Some people like the show, such as myself, but others, like you, don't find it appealing at all. It's just a matter of taste :).

I agree, as well - and good on you, for saying so. I gave it an honest, 'go', but it was just too much - - ridiculously so. Plus, I like things that I can watch with my son, and this was just...no way. Eee.

I agree that sex in TV shows should be for the sake of the story or for the sake of realism.

The A Song of Ice and Fire books are awesome, though. Just letting you know. ;)

I agree with you all the way - sex in TV shows should be for the sake of the story and not just for spectacle :/

It is so sad that people assume that if you do not like or watch something, it is a personal affront and you are somehow engineering your dislike of whatever it is for the express purpose of peeving them. That is a truly juvenile manner of thinking. Sorry you are having that in your life:(

Never watched it and don't really want to.

I would however read the books and plan to. I also collect the weapons, because they're the real eyecandy :P.

I do agree that even though I do like the series they do overly sexualize things.

Preach!

I barely got through the first episode before I decided that Game of Thrones was not for me.... ever!
