When Ultimate Spider-Man premiered 15 months ago, they had this segment with most of the shows, The Fury Files, where a hero would be introduced or described in greater depth than most of the episodes allow. I've been waiting for Coulson to be covered ever since. It seemed a bit like a pipe-dream but at the end of the Iron Fist episode, Journey of the Iron Fist, IT HAPPENED!!!!

The Fury Files...Accessing

Fury's Voice: Fury here, I need a special agent for an important Mission but not a superhero. I need a real agent, Agent Coulson. First name: Phil. This tried and true SHIELD agent proves that you don't need super powers to be a hero. You see, while I've got my head in the clouds, Coulson's got his eyes on the ground. I've got him undercover as the school principal at Midtown High. You see, these "kids" could use a little education, a little guidance and a SHIELD certified role model. Coulson might not be as physically strong as the Hulk but don't let his ordinary appearance fool you, Agent Coulson is my right hand man. Hero Approved. Go get 'em. Fury out.

 photo Photo1618-Copy_zpse99c8908.jpg

I'm not sure I totally agree with these statistics but it's still cool that they exist. There was no mention of a birthday. For those unfamiliar with Coulson's birthday drama, this is what has happened:

Fandom decided: April 2, 1962 When in doubt, do the actor's birthday.
IMDB: Insists Gregg's birthday is June 29, 1962.
Iron Man 2 Behind the Scenes/The Avengers: July 8, 1964
Phil Coulson Dossier from the iPad App*: April 2, 1965
*This was NOT included in the Briefcase Set which will always be a disappointment.
Marvel at the New York ComiCon: 1969

This is kind of weird because according to Iron Man 3, Tony and Phil would be the same age but that could be fun. It definitely does match up with the 616 Coulson though who seems a little younger than the cinematic counterpart.

So yeah, while most people accept July 8, he doesn't seem to have a firm birthdate and I'm not changing my story timelines yet again...

Also, when I was watching The Avengers last summer, I noticed in his death scene that it looked like Coulson's ear had been pierced at some point. Gregg confirmed earlier this summer that he had pierced his ear but not whether he'd pierced both so I paid extra special attention during Much Ado about Nothing and it is BOTH ears.

Now, between that and Ultimate Spider-Man insisting that Coulson had long hair when he was younger...I want more fic of Coulson's wild younger days...did someone have to make a different call with him?

I can't wait for more of Agents of SHIELD stuff but for now, we have new character features:

Is it just me or does Fitz have a bit of a Ianto or vulnerable Owen vibe? Ooh, he's Scottish! Oh, he needs to be talking all the time...

I thought I was the only one who noticed that Joss and co. seem to be taking their cues from Torchwood! ;)

But I can't be too mad at them since Russell T Davies and company based how they rebooted Doctor Who on how Whedon did Buffy.

UGH!!!! I wish the internet could give me what I want easier...there used to be an article from 2004 or 2005 about how one of the major facts they kept in mind was how the majority of financial/tv decisions were made by women so advertisers and producers wanted them to heavily target women in their new Doctor Who so they freely admitted to using Whedon's Buffy as an example to follow...

Rose is even an unlikely looking blonde...

Then, you have Torchwood where this long-lived guy surrounds himself with associates to help save the world while he looks for his way out of his situation, only it's waiting for a Doctor instead of atonement or Shanshu. Heck, both Angel and Torchwood's second episode ever is all about a sex demon/alien. You could write a paper on all the things Torchwood stole from Angel and Whedon, including James Marsters and Jane Espenson. Whedon jokingly referred to the stealing of Marsters at ComiCon years ago.

But it's interesting because we have to throw Warehouse 13 into the mix since Espenson co-created that. Warehouse 13 appears to be based off Espenson's love of Torchwood and making an American version out of it. Then, she leaves the show and gets hired by Davies to work on the last season of Torchwood while Warehouse 13 has guest actors from both Whedon; Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Davies; Torchwood. Plus, they redid the Owen plotline except I liked the WH13 version better.

So to that end, it feels kind of full circle or maybe an Ouroboros?

Of course, if Agents of SHIELD has any cameos from The X-Files, then my mind will be completely blown.

Oooh, but RTD and company didn't just "base" New Who/Torchwood off of Buffy. I mean, setting aside any of the arguing about whether or not Rose was just their bad retreading of Charlie from the extended universe stuff produced during the years between Classic Who and New Who, RTD has admitted that Jack Harkness got his last name from the Marvel Comics character Agatha Harkness.

There's a long history of bleed between Doctor Who and Marvel Comics. Marvel Comics introduced the Weird Happenings Organization (W.H.O.) in 1989, and had the founders named Doctor Alistaire Stuart and Brigadier Alysande Stuart. That apparently (the dates are such I should remember it, but) was "entirely replaced" at "collecting alien technologies and specimens for use in combat and gene-splicing with human test subjects" by an organization called Black Air in 1995. (I remember a friend saying when Torchwood started that it wasn't anywhere near as scary as Black Air.) It's only fitting for a Marvel SHIELD team to be interchangeable with a Torchwood one.

I assumed that since Rusty named him Jaxx that Moffat named him Harkness because he named Jeff Murdock after Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.

Also, you left out that Marvel was the original publisher of Doctor Who comics.

Hmm. I'd swear I'd heard RTD claimed that Jack Harkness was named after Agatha, but since I long since stopped trusting the man at all I wouldn't be surprised if Moffat did it. I just know I've heard Jack Harkness got his last name from Agatha.

I didn't leave it out. It isn't accurate. In the US Marvel Comics only reprinted British done stories, and in the UK Marvel only received the license to print Doctor Who comics after the BBC transferred the license to Marvel's British imprint Marvel UK from Polystyle. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate that Marvel did those reprints in the 80's. I have both the first issue of the Doctor Who monthly from 1984, and the "North American edition of the Sixth Doctor DWM story arc, Voyager in an omnibus graphic novel edition." The graphic novel is one of the reasons Frobisher is a favorite Doctor Who Companion of mine.

What's that saying, 'Only steal from the best'? LOL I do agree, there is a real full circle feeling going on here. I'm sure I'll like this SHIELD cast, but I'm still disappointed that they didn't approach Gareth David-Lloyd. He would've been a great fit, and I can only imagine the exchanges he and Clark Gregg could've had.

I would love to see Joss and RTD (with Espenson along for the ride) collaborate on a project sometime. The collective fangasm would be catastrophic!

I'd also heard about Jack's name coming from Agatha Harkness, and learning that Marvel had published Doctor Who comics back in the day furthers my opinion that Marvel should get the Who/Torchwood license someday. It's clear that the Marvel folks are great fans of the Whoniverse, and it would make a great fit. They wouldn't have to make them part of 616 or the Ultimates 'verse, but they could come up with great AU crossovers with Marvel properties as well as ongoing stories with Who/TW. I've had my own Torchwood/Avengers crossover cooking in my head for a while, and I even think it could be a hoot for Agatha to turn out to be Jack's daughter. ;)

I wouldn't want Gareth as a cast member since that could further confusion since the shows do have such similarities. However, Gareth in a guest starring capacity would be awesome and could still happen.

I would be half-excited, half-afraid about such a collaboration since everyone would be killed and then they would have epic arguments about who to bring back, if any...although someday, I would love for Joss to do an episode of Doctor Who.

The thing about whether Marvel should get to publish DW for the crossovers is this...
Currently, IDW doesn't do crossovers with Doctor Who and if this is the fault of IDW, then I'm all for a change.

However, it's my sneaking suspicion that it's Doctor Who that's against the idea even though IDW has properties that would be AWESOME for a crossover like Buffy, Angel, other Whedon properties, The X-Files and My Little Pony...I mean My Little Pony already has Doctor Hooves and one of the various Buffy comics had Ten and Rose in the background. I also would LOVE for The Lone Gunmen to meet Eleven.

Although if Marvel did get the license rights again, I want them to be able to put a Tardis at Epcot because dammit, United Kingdom should have a Tardis! It just needs one.

That's the other problem with Marvel...a large vocal part of the internet always gets up in arms any time that Doctor Who and Disney are mentioned anywhere near each other.

Daughter does make more sense than my headcanon...that Harkness is her married name from marrying Jack.

Then again, Jack's father was established as being named Franklin so I still think he either IS Franklin Richards or descended from him.

Matt Fraction could write an awesome Torchwood story though, I'm sure of it.

Oh yeah I agree, Gareth would make a great guest star. (I've been baffled as to why he hasn't gotten more gigs in Hollywood.)

Did you read the recent Who/ST: TNG comic crossover? It was pretty good. I supposed that even happened because IDW also has the Star Trek property at the moment. IDW isn't totally against crossing over with other companies, as they recently did a crossover with Classic Trek and the Legion of Super-Heroes. I think it might be the Beeb that's more hesitant of doing too many crossovers with Who. That wouldn't surprise me.

Hee, how about a whole Whoniverse land at Disney while we're at it? There's already rumors that Star Wars Land is in the works! LOL

Hmm, yeah... I wouldn't be surprised it Agatha turned out to be an ex-wife of Jack's. I could see him being into the sorceress type. *giggles*

Oh, Franklin Richards as Jack's father or ancestor? That would be an interesting twist! I'm liking your crossover bunnies there! (I've had a notion that Jack's son-in-law was Peggy Carter's son or grandson, and that Steven was named after Cap.)

The Agents of SHIELD team are very similar to the Torchwood team. I mean I can go through it one to one - Jack Harkness/Phil Coulson, Ianto Jones/Grant Ward, Owen Harper/Leo Fitz, Toshiko Sato/Jemma Simmons, Melinda May/Suzie Costello, and Skye/Gwen Cooper. One or two of those might not be the best fit, but it's pretty straight forward.
