Summary: Han Solo muses on his life after the war.

I thought it'd be easy...

Han Solo began undoing his formal shirt in the rented transport. The driver was a droid so he couldn't judge him like everyone else. He felt it at the official occasions like the dinner party they'd just attended. The people who had known Leia all her life and worked with her to make the new republic a reality stared at him like he'd stumbled off the wrong lift and into the wrong room.

'What is she doing with him? What's he doing here?'

What was he doing here? he thought. If 3PO were here, he'd say in that matter of fact tone that they were waiting for 'Mistress Leia' to make her goodbyes, but what was he doing here?

All he had ever been good for was flying, fighting and stealing. It worked perfectly in a corrupt Empire and even better for the Rebels during the war. Now three years had passed. The loyalists to the Empire had been defeated. Only minor skirmishes remained. The X-Wings had been reduced to civilian missions or being trotted out as war heroes.

It's what Han had been reduced to as well. The only modicum of respect he earned at these events was his status as a war hero and husband to one of the most powerful women in the universe.

He was an old soldier without a purpose anymore and he wasn't even that old. Some had taken jobs as commercial pilots but he couldn't imagine flying legal payloads or a bunch of tourists. It wasn't the same once you'd outrun TIE fighters on a regular basis.

What was he going to do?

He loved Leia and knew it made her unhappy that he had become so restless. It pained him to cause that in her.

The door opened and he helped Leia into her seat. Before the door was even closed, she'd kissed him. He was surprised. They usually kept public displays to a minimum since they would dominate the holovids for days afterwards.

"What was that?" he asked as she settled against him.

"Home!" she called to their driver and they began to move. "Do I need a reason?"

There was a naughty glint in her brown eyes that he missed seeing. For a moment, she looked more like the princess he had fought and fell in love with. Then, it was gone. Leia was the more mature woman she'd become after seeing so much.

"You looked so lost. I wanted to take that frown off your face," she explained.

"Sorry, I just thought...I thought it'd be easy...," Han spoke, motioning to their surroundings. They were on Coruscant, surrounded by the skyscrapers and transports of the elite. Despite the new government, rampant poverty and petty theft still abounded in the lower levels but you could never tell it from this view.

She took his hands and squeezed.

"None of it's easy. We've been at war for over a generation and now we have to learn how to live in peace. It's a whole new universe and the government's just a baby."

Her voice had an odd tone on that last word. He could see her visibly compose herself.

"How would you like to add another title to your list of accomplishments? Are you up for anything?" she asked with that naughty glint back.

"The more dangerous the better," he replied.

"Hopefully, it won't come to that, daddy," Leia spoke. He looked at her face, then her middle and back at her face again.

Did she mean what he thought she meant?

"Leia..."

"Yes, Han, yes," she answered. He hugged her close and kissed her.

"How far along?" he asked.

"Four weeks," she said with a smile. They had a new adventure to embark on together. He couldn't wait to tell Chewbacca and Luke.

XD

I love this really realistic doubt on Han's part and how Leia sensed his own feelings--really understood it too. I like this phase of their relationship in that while it's difficult to adjust, they work together. :)

I love the ending too, and how she told him!

Thank you so much for this!

It's quite a contrast to the life he used to live so it makes perfect sense why he feels like a fish out of water. I can see him teaching the child, no matter the gender, how to shoot a blaster and run from the soldiers.
