Putin and other shadiness has me a little scared for my journal. I have eight years and a lot of entries invest here which I don't want to lose which means

I think it's time that

I have to get a Dreamwidth

That is the best way to backup LJ, right?

So, how do I do that?
Can I still post here and have it automatically backed up there?
Do I have to have that crossposted tag at the bottom?

I have a dreamwidth too, for backup purposes mostly. I periodlically go and import my entries there. It's a little annoying, but it works. It even imports all your comments and security settings! It would be more convenient if I could crosspost from here to DW, because I want to post from here... but I can deal with that.

You can sign up for Dreamwidth the same way you signed up for LiveJournal (Dreamwidth no longer requires that somebody have an invite code in order to join). Joining is free, though you can upgrade to a paid account if you choose to (Free accounts can't edit their comments similar to have LJ was, but... Dreamwidth is ad - free, even for the free accounts, so no worries about pesky pop - ups or banners if you don't fee like paying for an account at the moment).

Importing your LJ entires isn't as instaneous as simply signing up for Dreamwidth, though this from their FAQ describes how to import pretty good and who to go to if you run into problem importing your entries (and no, your LJ entries will not be erased from your LJ when you import them).

It's pretty easy to import into dreamwidth, in my experience. (This reminds me that I need to go back and re-import again; I have almost 3200 entries, and I'd hate to lose those, for sure). You can also make a Lj Book, although I've had problems with this stalling occasionally.

It's easier, if you want to automatically back up every time you make a new entry, to post on DW and crosspost to LJ; it will do that automatically, as long as you set your account up and enter your LJ info. And, no, you don't have to have that "crossposted" tag at the bottom; you can set your preferences so that isn't there, or so it says something different. I've just deleted that so mine doesn't say anything when I crosspost, so theoretically, you shouldn't be able to tell when I post there vs posting here. The biggest stumbling block for me is that I've got a paid account (and extra icons) here, but not there, so my icons don't always match my post (they have to be called exactly the same thing between the two sites), but that's not a deal-breaker for me, usually.

it's pretty straight forward and you can edit whether or not you want the crosspost link at the bottom. The only problematic is that DW's interface is shitty.

I've got an account over there, have had for a while, and all my posts are posted there, and set to automatically crosspost to my lj.

As someone else said, the "crossposted" comment at the bottom of entries can be edited to say what you want, or left off completely, it's entirely up to you.

Saw the news about lj being weird on tumblr, came over to investigate and saw a lot more people talking about migrating/backing up.

Just wanted to say... if you move over to DW, let me know! I'm corrielle there too... I mostly post from there (when I remember to post) these days.
