However, there are those who are speaking out and telling the world that all Christians do not side with Hobby Lobby. Some of us are more progressive than that.

http://www.fox23.com/ap/ap/oklahoma/vigil-planned-over-hobby-lobby-ruling/ngWrJ/

I try to find hope in the Bible...
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you".

But that's kind of hard because it and other passages make it sound like it's never getting better until we're all dead...

So I tend to go with Samwise Gamgee:

Frodo: I can't do this, Sam.

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

It's people like you that I can't hate all Christians. I just hate the self-righteous hypocritical Christians that try to shove their ideals down other people's throats without caring about the consequences.

(hugs) thank you

Me, too, none of us want to live in a theocracy and it's wrong to force a country into being one; no different than the Isus or the Boko Harem.

I read the Quran a few years ago to find out the truth about what it said or didn't. I found that the worst rules on society were taken from the Old Testament itself whereas in between the Old Testament hatred were progressive ideas like:
1. "Say, "O disbelievers, "

2. "I worship not that which you worship,"

3. "Nor will you worship that which I worship."

4. "And I shall not worship that which you are worshiping."

5. "Nor will you worship that which I worship."

6. "To you be your religion, and to me my religion."

The religious radicals whether they be Christian, Muslim, Jewish or whoever ruin it for everyone.

It is a universally acknowledged fact that extremists ruin everything for everyone.

Also last time I checked, we lived in a country that valued separation of church and state too.

Ugh. Yes. I hate that I'm thrown into the same group with the ultra-conservative Right Wing Christians. I hate even worse that some of those Christians are related to me (by marriage, but still...), so I have the family association to deal with, too. I spend a lot of time trying to remind people that I'm my own person with my own opinions and just because we have the same last name because I married their son, it doesn't mean I believe everything they do.

(Love that quote, btw. Thanks for reminding me of it!)

This is why I am against organized religion. This is why we can't have nice things! ;)

(hilariously, some christian folk were harassing people at a McD's today trying to lure people with giftcards into talking about god. I almost wish they'd come to me, my favourite line to people like that is: I thought this was about doing good by being selfless, not by shouting out IM DOING GOOD FOR GOD LOOK AT ME)

I don't see this as an ecumenical issue but rather a blow to the rights of a women on a secular level. The heart of this ruling is discrimination against upwards of 50% of the population. As someone who does not live in America and can only give an observers pov, it seems to me that your basic civil liberties are being ever eroded. The very thing that is purported to be held most sacred is being given away to a conservative minority.

I personally believe the anti-birth control/abortion movement is really about men trying to control women's bodies. It's disgusting.

I hate that the crux of this issue is religion, which should be separate from laws and politics (which is why I hate when people quote the ONE line from the bible about gay marriage).

To me, it's about a company imposing rules onto individuals, when you get hired, you're not an indentured servant (though the application for Hobby Lobby is rather scary

Yes, exactly, Render unto Caesar what is Caesar...

What I really hate is that to follow Leviticus means to ignore that whole New Testament which is what makes a Christian a Christian as opposed to a Jew...
Besides, Leviticus also says we can't eat shellfish or put barrettes or ribbons in our hair or a million other stupid things...

That's exactly what the companies want now although I'm not sure indentured servant is the right term since they were free to go after seven years with skills, references and usually a bit of money to start somewhere. This is more like a form of slavery.

I've never seen their job application, does it ask for religious affiliation and everything?

There's a scene in the west wing where President Bartlett goes after a radio host who keeps using Leviticus.

I have walked away from organized religion, but my husband attends church and he's slowly studying the bible

I don't know where in it but there's a direct line from Jesus about no matter what your children do you are to love and care for them.

Thought it also said that after X amount of years debts were to be forgiven, love to see the bank owners with that one.

I don't remember but it's really sort of 'you must be like this' and I don't think they can legally ask your religious affiliation, but I felt less scrutinized with an FBI background check to be a substitute teacher, it was kind of scary how militant it felt

I didn't apply

Good for you. I totally agree. Most, 'Christians', these days are not really followers of Christ's teachings...they cherry-pick, in order to justify hate...IDK...

If I remember correctly (and I could be wrong as I'm a Jew) Jesus predicted his followers would take his word as gospel and use it to become judgmental assholes in his name, a thing we wasn't cool with.

I've had something written on my LJ for many years now that I utter so much when dealing with extreme views
'I can't stand hate disguised as religion'

if someone doesn't agree with something they hide behind religion in some way to justify their choices

I totally agree with you - Christians nowadays just use their beliefs to attempt to justify their hatred.

I still don't understand however the fuck healthcare works in the US. To be fair, I don't understand how a lot of things work in the US, like the Supreme Court. Idk what that is, idk what that does.

I mean, it's been over a year (since mArch 31 2013) that abortion has been 100% reimbursable by the French Social Security. As for contarceptives in general, most of them are reimbursable at 65% by the State (and most people has additional insurance that covers the rest), with the main exception being certain types of oral pills because of "unproven efficiency and common thrombolic side effects". The state doesn' reimburse meds that don't work, as a rule. And now you know more about female reproductive health and the French helathcare system than you ever wanted to know, I wager.

sadly, we don't know how a lot of things work in the US any attempts to change things are extremely difficult

if you're sick or need educational help, you're pretty much screwed unless you already had money

Hell, there's a program in my state that allows people to get really nice homes and have a few years before they start paying on their mortgage, except you have QUALIFY for the big loans anyway, which is impossible with the cap on earnings to qualify.

If I could qualify for the big loan for a house anyway, I wouldn't need the program

Gandhi is purported to have said this about Christians:

" I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ ".

I too consider myself a Christian, but, I don't bother too much with organized religion these days; can't abide some of the un-Christ-like Christians I have to deal with. Unfortunately, it's that face of Christianity that gets the most public exposure.
